Alternative Learning Centers
Providing educational services for (grades K-10) students in a nontraditional learning environment.
What are Alternative Learning Centers?
Alternative Learning Centers (ALC) promote development of behavioral, academic, and social skills. These skills help the student to be a more productive and educated member of our community.
Program Overview:
The ALC provides schooling for students who are experiencing behavioral challenges, academic difficulties, or students who simply require a nontraditional learning environment. The academic materials used at the ALC meet Virginia Standards of Learning. Every effort is made to match the student’s base school courses.
Our goal is for all students to meet the following conditions:
- regular attendance
- appropriate behavior
- good grades
At-Hope Framework
The At-Hope cultural framework creates an environment where all students are capable of success, no exceptions! Students explore and develop a roadmap to experience success in life’s four major destinations: home and family; education and career; community and service; and hobbies and recreation.
Multi-Tiered System of support (MTSS)
The ALC uses a MTSS framework to support student outcomes through continuous data-driven decision making. The ALC provides equitable student academic opportunities, a positive school climate, and promotes social-emotional wellness through a culture of shared responsibility and collaboration among staff members and families.
Restorative practices are used to build relationships with students and families.
Staff members explicitly teach executive function skills to help students improve their ability to start tasks, stay organized, monitor their own progress, and work through hard tasks.
Schoolwide social and emotional learning (SEL) focus on academic growth and is a systemic approach to integrating academic, social, and emotional learning across all school settings that support students and adults. SEL programming includes evidence-based, trauma-sensitive practices creating positive school cultures, embedding SEL into content areas across the school day, and explicitly teaching SEL skills to students and adults.
