Wolftrap School Counseling Program

2008-2009

Welcome to Wolftrap Elementary School!  We are Kathy Boyer and Laura May, Wolftrap’s school counselors.  As school counselors, our goal is to assist your students in fulfilling their potential as effective learners.  We also work to maintain a positive school climate, where all students feel accepted and supported.  Mrs. Boyer is the full-time counselor, who works primarily with kindergarten, second grade, fourth grade, and sixth grade.  Mrs. May is the part-time counselor, and is at the school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  She is the counselor for first, third, and fifth grade.

If you are a Wolftrap parent, we want you to know that we are eager to hear from you.  Please feel free to contact us at anytime if you have a concern about your child.   Communication with the school counselors is kept confidential and does not become part of your student’s record.  We hope parents will also visit our site on FCPS Blackboard 24/7, for more detailed information and resources.

The Guidance Program at Wolftrap offers:

Counseling - Students can be counseled individually or in small groups.  Individual counseling is often a single meeting requested by the student to discuss a personal, social, or academic concern.  Groups meet during lunchtime and are centered on topics like social skills, changing families, and anger management. Parent permission is obtained prior to any extended individual or group counseling.  Please let us know if you would like your child to participate in a lunch group.

Classroom Guidance -  Classroom guidance lessons take place in every classroom approximately twice a month.  Guidance lessons focus on character education and on life skills such as bullying prevention, friendship, decision making, and study habits.

Consultation -  Counselors consult with parents, teachers, other staff members, and outside resources, to provide academic, personal, and social support for our students.  We participate in the local screening process to identify strategies that help struggling students learn.

Coordination of Programs -  Counselors help coordinate a number of school-wide programs and activities, including Parent - Counselor Coffees, Student Council Association, Peer Mediation, Career Fairs, Ethics Day, and World Heritage Night.

We hope that you and your student(s) will take advantage of us as a resource.  We are here to help, and we look forward to hearing from you!
