WELCOME TO THE WOLFTRAP LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
Ms. Karen DeHoratiis, Librarian
Virginia Readers'Choice Program
The Virginia Readers Choice Program (formerly called Virginia Young Readers’ Program) encourages students to read books selected by a committee of individuals who are familiar with current additions to children’s literature. Ten titles are selected in each of the following categories: Primary (Grades K-2), Elementary (3-5), Middle (6-8) and High School (9-12). If students read a minimum of four titles in any of the categories, they can vote on their favorite title in the spring. The titles receiving the most votes from Wolftrap students are compared to the state-wide winners. Last year thousands of Virginia students participated in this optional reading program.
At Wolftrap, all ten titles in the Primary category are read aloud to every student in grades kindergarten through second grade prior to the voting deadline. This means that every primary student at Wolftrap is eligible to vote on their favorite book. The students are also given connections between the content of the book and topics in the curriculum. For example, the title How Groundhogs Garden Grew by Lynne Cherry could be connected to studies on plant and animal life, the four seasons, and the Thanksgiving holiday.
Students in grades three and four are encouraged to read titles listed in the Elementary category. One or two of the titles may be read aloud to the students during library time or in the classroom. However, the students are primarily encouraged to read the books independently. If the students are interested, they can take a five question quiz on the computer on any title they have completed. This helps determine which students are eligible to vote on their favorite title in March.
Fifth and sixth grade students are encouraged to read four or more titles from either the Elementary or Middle categories. The students are familiar with the plots of the selections because they listen to summaries of the books during library time. However, students who choose to participate read the books independently and are identified as being eligible to vote based on their reading logs. Several Virginia Readers' Choice titles are also featured in the Battle of the Books.
