The Fairfax County General Music Program is one of the best music programs in this country. It’s reputation stretches coast to coast and Wolftrap is a strong example of this program. Here in Fairfax County, the music program utilizes four strains: Investigate, Create, Perform, and Connect. Through investigating, music students learn about form, instruments, styles, and history. Through creating students get a first hand experience of music and how it works while also developing their musical talents. Performing gives students the chance to show all their research and efforts. And through all of these strains, students connect what they have learned and done with other areas of the curriculum and within music itself. It is through these strains that students find their musical ability and joy of music.
I believe that all students have innate musical abilities and deserve the right to a complete musical education. Every student has the potential for success in music and none should be denied the opportunities to sing, play, move, audiate, create, and learn those things that are intrinsic only to music. All students have the right to learn about music of their heritage as well as the music and cultures of others. It is important to teach students to make intelligent inferences about music so that they may become musically literate as musicians, future consumers, and concert attendees.
