Fairfax County School Board

The Fairfax County School Board is charged by the statutes of Virginia and the regulations of the Virginia Board of Education to operate the public schools of Fairfax County by setting general school policy and establishing guidelines that will ensure the proper administration of the Fairfax County Public Schools programs.

Speak at a Meeting

The School Board welcomes comments from our Fairfax County community and believes that strong community engagement and outreach are important components of a successful school system.  The 'Register to Testify' link below provides information on the upcoming School Board Regular Meetings, including how to sign-up for the Speaker's List. All speakers at School Board Regular Meetings must acknowledge that they have read and understand the expectations for those taking part in community participation.

School Board Meetings

The Fairfax County School Board conducts regular business meetings, work sessions, forums, public hearings, and special called meetings. Also, members of the Fairfax County community can serve on the school board committees made up of standing committees, community advisory committees. and liaisons to other organizations.

School Board Committees and Liaisons

School Board  Standing Committees focus on specific areas of governance, management, and policy within the school division. These committees are designed to ensure that critical aspects of the school system receive focused attention and oversight. Standing Committees support the Board's work by preparing recommendations, alternatives, or implications for consideration by the full School Board.

School Board Advisory Committees support the Board's work through providing community input on specific issues. Community Advisory Committee appointments reflect the religious, cultural, and ethnic diversity of Fairfax County and each magisterial districts. The advisory committees meet throughout the year and submit an annual report to the Board.

School Board Members represent the School Board and school division by serving as liaisons to various regional agencies, committees and organizations.

Office of Auditor General (OAG)

The School Board has formed an Audit Committee and established the Office of Auditor General (OAG) to independently determine whether the ongoing processes for FCPS operations and performance are adequately designed and functioning efficiently and effectively.

Strategic Governance

The School Board provides oversight of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) through regular engagement with Division Leadership and through these superintendent evaluation, executive limitations, and strategic plan goal reporting.
