FCPS partners with the Fairfax County Redevelopment & Housing Authority and the Fairfax County Department of Housing & Community Development to offer eligible tenants a Magnet Housing Program, Affordable Dwelling Unit Program, and Workforce Dwelling Unit Program.

Magnet Housing Program

The Magnet Housing Program provides attractive, well-located, affordable rental housing for contracted school teachers and bus drivers; Fire, Police, and Sheriff’s Office recruits in training; and nurses or other allied health professionals at INOVA, so they can reach their career goals while enjoying the benefit of an affordable monthly rent. The program is administered by the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) and the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).

Affordable Dwelling Unit Program (ADUs)

Fairfax County has a wide variety of committed affordable rental housing options owned by private landlords and are not owned or operated by the county. Committed Affordable refers to rental housing where rents are guaranteed by agreement with federal, state, or local governments, to be affordable to households with low- and moderate-income.

Workforce Dwelling Unit Program (WDUs)

The Workforce Dwelling Unit (WDU) Rental Program provides qualified households with low- and moderate-income the opportunity to live at a reduced rent in privately owned and privately managed market-rate apartment communities located throughout Fairfax County.  WDUs are typically located close to urban centers with various employment and transportation options.

Additional Committed Affordable Housing Units

Privately owned and operated rental properties can also be labeled “committed affordable” by virtue of receiving state, federal and/or local resources to support the new development, acquisition, and/or rehabilitation of affordable housing. Rents and income limits can vary depending on the requirements tied to each unit or property.

Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Properties - Virginia Housing

A number of privately owned properties in Virginia are “committed affordable” through the acceptance of federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits. The program is administered within the Commonwealth by Virginia Housing.
