Histories of Closed Schools (1974-2011)
Remembering former Fairfax County public schools.
Beginning in the mid-1970s, declining student enrollment led to the closure of many schools in Fairfax County, particularly in neighborhoods that saw the earliest growth during the post-World War II baby boom. During the period of 1980 to 1985, FCPS closed 16 elementary schools, three intermediate schools, and merged two high schools. Additional school closures occurred during the late 1990s and 2000s as Fairfax County worked to modernize and improve its public school buildings. Below are brief histories of former Fairfax County public schools that were closed during the period of 1974 to 2011.
