VRS Members: Purchase of Prior Service Provisions Expanded

VRS Purchase of Prior Service Options Expanded to Include Certain Types of FMLA

As of January 1, 2017, the provisions for service credit purchase under the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) have been expanded to include approved, unpaid Family and Medical Leave taken to care for the serious health condition of a spouse, child, or parent.

Under the expanded provision, eligible participants may purchase up to 12 workweeks of leave taken during a 12-month period.  Service purchased under this provision is in addition to other types of service that may be eligible for purchase.  For more information, including timeframes and cost, go to www.varetire.org search on keyword “purchase of prior service”.
