2020 General Assembly Update
Key Education-Related Subjects
Week ending Friday, January 17, 2020

Fairfax County Public Schools, Office of Government Relations

Additional information regarding the education-related legislation described below, as well as for all other bills related to education can be found in the thirteen subject categories located on the web pages of the FCPS Office of Government Relations at https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/departments-and-offices/government-relations/virginia-general-assembly.  Bills in these categories are linked to the Virginia Division of Legislative Services web pages, which provide up-to-date summary, fiscal impact and bill status information.

K-12 Related Legislation

Friday, January 17th was the last day for legislators to introduce bills for the current session. It will still take a few days for their final submissions to enter the legislative information system, so we should know all bills under consideration for this Session by Monday.  As of this writing, over 500 bills have been identified with some relationship to K-12 education.

The tables below include all introduced bills (as of 01/17/2020) that we have identified which could impose some sort of mandate or requirement on local school divisions, including required training, required curriculum, or required data or parental reporting.  Please note that not all bills listed here would necessarily have a quantifiable financial impact nor are they necessarily problematic -- details on actual impacts (including potential costs) are still being determined and will be shared as appropriate.  Also note that some bills are listed in more than one category since they may affect multiple areas.  And finally note that several the bills listed below were already reported in narrative form in last week’s Update.
