Superintendent Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Brabrand standing at a podium

The Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce has awarded Superintendent of Schools Scott S. Brabrand the Eileen D. Curtis Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented on March 31, the award recognizes the superintendent’s career in Fairfax County Public Schools.

In 1994, after volunteering for FCPS through a business partnership, Dr. Brabrand became a career switcher. He left the telecommunications industry to become a social studies teacher at Herndon High School.

During his keynote address at the event, Superintendent Brabrand lauded the chamber and several area businesses and community groups for their recent support of FCPS including Allwyn Corporation, Bookworm Central, Capital One, Cornerstones, Cox Communications and Cox Business, Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation, SAP NS2, and Western Fairfax Christian Ministries. He also spoke appreciatively of the chamber’s engagement in recent school construction bond referendums, thanking them for their support of public education.

The superintendent is leaving FCPS on June 30.

Thank You for Serving

St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, our five-year Ignite Partner from Annandale, has been serving students at Belvedere Elementary School figuratively and literally. Their service is part of their Needs-Based Partnership. And, as you can see in the short video below, it is very much appreciated.

Thank you to the leadership and all of the parishioners at St. Alban’s Episcopal, including their furry inspirational leader, Supervisor Clark.

More Power to You

The Dominion Energy Northern Virginia Chapter of the African American Resource Group (AARG - NoVa) has generously donated books to Fairfax County Public Schools. On March 28, 2022 seven AARG - NoVa members took time to read a few of the books to 5th grade students at Cameron Elementary School.

The donated books promote diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as the group’s mission: To connect, empower, develop, engage, and support the recruitment and retention of Dominion Energy’s African American employees, while providing valuable company and community contributions.

In total, 705 books have been donated and are being distributed to 141 of our elementary schools’ libraries. Thank you to the Dominion Energy and the AARG - NoVa team.

Workforce Development Program Helps with Firefighter Shortage

Departments across Northern Virginia are desperate to hire firefighters. Chantilly Academy is helping to fill that void by training the next generation of firefighters. Seniors enrolled in the firefighting course at Chantilly Academy learn alongside Fairfax County Fire and Rescue recruits, working with state-of-the-art equipment and getting valuable hands-on training.

Graduates of the FCPS firefighting course have gone on to pursue both volunteer and career firefighting. At least eight have returned to the Fairfax County Fire Academy after graduation and become Fairfax County firefighters.
