About Melanie Kadlic Meren 

Ms. Meren is an education policy professional, parent, and community advocate who believes that strong schools make a strong community. Her professional career of decades is centered on promoting public education, and includes service in the U.S. Department of Education and in the U.S. Office of Management and Budget; advocacy with the Virginia Association of Environmental Education; service on FCPS Committees and school PTAs; and more. 

School Board Committee/Leadership (Current): Ms. Meren serves on the School Board’s Governance Committee and the Public Engagement Committee. She is the Board’s liaison to the Advanced Academics Programs Advisory Committee (AAPAC). Ms. Meren is also focused on state-level advocacy, and is the School Board’s State Legislative Liaison, the Board’s Delegate to the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA), and also the Vice Chair of the VSBA’s Northeastern Region representing 13 school divisions. 

School Board Committee/Leadership (Previous): Ms. Meren has Chaired the School Board’s Governance Committee, Budget Committee and its Public Engagement Committee. She has also served on the Board’s Comprehensive Planning Development Committee, Title I Parent Advisory Committee (TPAC), Human Resources Advisory Committee, Adult and Community Education Advisory Committee, and Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee. Ms. Meren has been a Board liaison to the Fairfax County Athletic Council, and the Fairfax County Park Authority, as well as the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Commission. Ms. Meren has been Vice Chair of the School Board.

Education: Ms. Meren holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Albany (State University of New York) and a master’s degree in public policy from Duke University. Additionally, she has completed the Sorensen Institute for Political Leaders program at the University of Virginia. 

Personal: Since 2005, Ms. Meren has lived in Fairfax County. She and her husband have two students in FCPS.
