Fairfax County Class of 2024 Continues to Surpass State and Global SAT Averages
Fairfax County seniors in the class of 2024 continued to perform well above state and global averages on the SAT, according to results released by the College Board.
The Fairfax County average score for the class of 2024 (1178) was higher than the state average (1101) and the global average (1024). The scores for Fairfax County Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (594) and Mathematics (584) subtests are also higher than the averages for students in the state and worldwide. This is true for all students and each reporting group, as seen in the table below.
“I am immensely proud of our schools’ dedication to providing equitable and high-quality learning opportunities, which are reflected in SAT scores that continue to outperform state and global averages,” said Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. “This demonstrates the unique power of public education and its ability to uplift and empower each and every student; together all things are possible."

Although the Fairfax total mean score is down 3 points from 2023 results, this decline is notably less than the declines seen for Virginia overall (down 12 points) and worldwide (down 4 points).
At the same time, FCPS continues to show stronger participation rates compared to Virginia as a whole:
- FCPS had a 69.0% participation rate for the class of 2024, with a total of 10,306 seniors taking the SAT exam at least once. The FCPS 2024 rate was up 5.0% from 2023.
- Virginia had a 52.4% participation rate in 2024, which was up 4.8% from 2023.
Fairfax County Public Schools continues to offer SAT School Day free of charge to all enrolled seniors, contributing to the strong participation rates across the division. However, Fairfax County participation rates also reflect a developing nationwide movement to de-emphasize entrance exams within the college admissions process.
