Hello FCPS Staff, Families, and Community,

Yesterday, the Virginia Department of Education announced new model policies.

I understand the concerns that our students, staff, families, and community members may have about what this change of direction by the state may mean for our school division, particularly for our LGBTQIA+ community.

I want to be clear that FCPS remains committed to an inclusive and affirming learning environment for each and every student and staff member including those who are transgender or gender expansive. Our schools will continue to be safe, welcoming, and respectful learning spaces.

We believe our current FCPS policies are consistent with federal and state anti-discrimination laws. We also believe that supporting our students and working with parents and caregivers are not mutually exclusive; we already do both and will continue to do so.

Our core values and beliefs speak to the very heart of who we are at Fairfax County Public Schools, and our students, staff, and families are counting on us to adhere to them:

Fairfax County Public Schools inspires and empowers students to meet high academic standards, lead healthy, ethical lives, and be responsible and innovative global citizens:

  1. Each student is entitled to an excellent education that meets their individual needs.
  2. Everyone thrives in a vibrant, healthful, safe, enriching, and respectful environment.
  3. Our diversity is a strength that creates resilient, open, and innovative global citizens.

These core values -- to enhance school safety and create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive school environment -- are also outlined in our FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities.

We will be thoroughly reviewing the new state model policies in the coming days and will share a more detailed response once that review is complete. In the meantime, we look forward to welcoming all our students and staff back for an abundantly joyful school year.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Michelle Reid
