Six FCPS Teams, Eleven Individuals Win 2023-24 VHSL Academic and Activity Championships

FCPS students compete in a variety of academic and activity-based competitions throughout the school year. This year, six teams and 11 individuals won the Virginia High School League (VHSL) academic championship and six teams and eight individuals were the state runners-up. There were also 22 publications recognized in the Trophy class category of the VHSL Media Championships.

The teams winning the championship were:

  • McLean High School, Scholastic Bowl (pictured above).
  • Woodson High School, Esports, Rocket League Fall Tournament.
  • Centreville High School, Esports, League of Legends Fall Tournament 
  • McLean High School, Film Festival Best Documentary.
  • Chantilly High School, Forensics.
  • Langley High School, Debate. 

The individuals winning the championship were:

  • Camila Canelas Sota, Chantilly High School, Forensics, Extemporaneous Speaking.
  • Ella Ridgway, Lake Braddock Secondary School, Forensics, Impromptu Speaking.
  • Valeria Peterson, Justice High School, Forensics, Story Telling.
  • Elias Kassa, Justice High School, Forensics, Serious Dramatic Interpretation.
  • Selamawit Demeke, Westfield High School, Forensics, Prose Interpretation.
  • Sam Wolf and Zack Topscher, Chantilly High School, Forensics, Humorous Duo Interpretation. 
  • Camille Dausch and Anya Saffari, Chantilly High School, Forensics, Serious Duo Interpretation. 
  • Julia Hosage and Maya Hutchins, Madison High School, Debate, Public Forum.
  • Vishwa Rakasi, Langley High School, Debate, Lincoln-Douglas. 
  • Jacob Bowen-Glazeroff, Debate, Student Congress.
  • Abeni Smith, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), Creative Writing, Creative Nonfiction.

The teams that were state runners-up were:

  • Oakton High School, Debate. 
  • TJHSST, Scholastic Bowl. 
  • Annandale, Film Festival Best Experimental.
  • TJHSST, Creative Writing, Folder. 
  • Chantilly High School, Esports, League of Legends Spring Tournament. 
  • South Lakes High School, Esports, Rocket League Spring Tournament. 

The individuals that were state runners-up were: 

  • Gabriel Elferrane, Langley High School, Forensics, Extemporaneous Speaking. 
  • Eva Jabar, Chantilly High School, Forensics, Original Oratory.
  • Arunika Awula and Arunima Awula, Chantilly High School, Forensics, Humorous Duo Interpretation.
  • Nishmaya Gundapuneedi and McKenzy Hopkins, Chantilly High School, Forensics, Serious Duo Interpretation.  
  • Ashley Chen and Claire Zhang, Oakton High School, Debate, Policy.
  • Ahaan Shah and Sahil Gubbi, Langley High School, Debate, Public Forum. 
  • Janet Li, Oakton High School, Debate, Lincoln-Douglas. 
  • Rosabel Liu, Chantilly High School, Creative Writing, Short Story. 

Schools that were recognized as Trophy Class winners of the VHSL Media Championships, which were announced in October 2023 but represented work completed in the 2022-23 school year, were:
