At Waynewood Elementary School, kindness isn’t just a lesson — it’s a way of life. On January 24, students put their hearts into action by creating handmade Valentine’s Day cards for people facing serious health challenges. Through a partnership with Valentinesbykids.org, they crafted messages of love and encouragement for individuals who are ill, homebound, or living in long-term care facilities.

For many students, the project was more than just an art activity. It was a chance to make someone’s day a little brighter.

“If you are compassionate or kind to someone, it can help them feel better if they’re down or sad,” said fifth grader Will. “You can bring a smile to their face and make them feel loved.”

Throughout the day, classrooms were filled with the sound of crayons gliding across paper and the hum of thoughtful conversations. Students carefully chose their words, knowing their messages would reach someone who truly needed a boost. They learned that even the smallest gestures of kindness could have a big impact.

“It makes me feel good because I know that they’re going to feel loved once they read it,” said fifth grader Charlie Mae. “Valentine’s Day is about spreading love. When you make others happy, it makes you happy too.”

As students sealed their cards, there was a shared sense of excitement—knowing that their words would bring a smile to someone they had never met.

“I’m really happy that we get to bring joy to someone this Valentine’s season,” said fifth grader Reese. “Some people don’t always receive acts of compassion, so I hope this makes them happy.”

Through community service, the students are practicing the Portrait of a Graduate attributes of ethical and global citizens and collaboration by going beyond their school’s walls to make a positive change in the world.

The initiative aligns with Waynewood’s core value of compassion. More importantly, it showed students that kindness doesn’t require grand gestures—sometimes, all it takes is a heartfelt message and a little bit of love.
