FCPS CARES of the Month Recipients

Central Office

Steve Campbell, Instructional Programs Support Center

"Thank you, Steve Campbell! You are an absolute star! You went above and beyond helping parent volunteers, with limited experience, create the theatre program for Woodson’s 34th annual Broadway revue: Dessert on Broadway. Your expertise, with your friendly, accessible approach, guided us through an unfamiliar process. We appreciate all your care, attention to detail, the tweaks and adjustments you made to produce a show program that will be a keepsake for so many student performers and their families for years to come. Thank you!"

Josh Bickford, Carson MS

"Mr. Bickford is an amazing teacher. Due to a miscommunication with my child, I arrived at his last school play during the last five minutes. When Mr. Bickford noticed I missed the play, he kindly asked his students if they would be willing to play the part my son was in one more time. His interaction with his students was commendable, and of course, I was able to enjoy the play. Thank you!"

Crystal Campbell, Glasgow MS

"Crystal Campbell is the epitome of a dedicated and caring teacher. She understands and implements strategies that show she knows the needs of every one of her students. Crystal has an extremely challenging case load in each of her classes. To watch her work with her students is amazing as it would be overwhelming to most people. The mix of students in her classes is very challenging to manage and Crystal handles them with care, consistency, and positivity. She provides positive affirmations when students break down and refuse to work. She is able to work with them and encourage them to try the academic tasks even when they adamantly refuse to take risks. She turns their negative speech around with her positive outlook and encouragement. She creates engaging and interesting tasks through her knowledge of the content of Personal Development and their needs. She consistently focuses on teaching them self-control in their learning and behavior. Recently, we collaborated on a unit using the picture book, The Bad Seed. Using Pear Deck, we created an activity where students had the opportunity to identify feelings and actions of characters and how those actions affected others. Students had the opportunity to reflect on their own behaviors and actions when connecting to the characters. Crystal spends hours outside of the work day to ensure her lessons are engaging and interactive for the students. She also spends time working with the Panther Time committee to produce lessons for the whole school that will positively impact choices they make and improving their growth mindset. In a world where teachers are often overwhelmed, Crystal rises above these personal challenges and comes to work every day with a smile on her face and a kind word to the faculty and her students. I can't envision a Glasgow without Crystal."

Justin Robinson, Hollin Meadows ES

"As I was walking in the hallway, I couldn’t help but overhear Mr. Robinson talking with a student he was taking and walking with. Through questions, he was able to understand the student was overwhelmed and needed to take a break from the classroom so they could refocus. Mr. Robinson praised the student for listening to their body, advocating for their need and making a safe and appropriate choice for themself in a moment they felt negative emotions. I hope all staff are encouraging their students the way Mr. Robinson did because I could tell this student knew they made a good decision in self-care and felt proud. Great work Mr. Robinson!"

Tracy Tashima, Hunt Valley ES

"There are many people who work in education in the world. There are some who were born to be a teacher. Tracy Tashima is one who was  born to be a teacher and is an inspiration to all of her students. While I've heard for years that she was an amazing teacher, she was even highlighted in a conference when the main speaker saw her in a crowd and talked about how lucky they were to have worked with her previously, I am one of the very lucky ones who get to experience her as a teacher firsthand. Long before the pandemic she was very aware of the effect of mindfulness on students. Now more than ever this is so important. The students are looked at as people first, they are never looked at as test scores or standards. She understands that in order for students to be successful they need to feel safe and valued in the classroom. Anytime anything happens outside of school that is remotely positive, my child wants his teacher to know about it because he feels like she is his biggest fan. In speaking with her students, both current and past, every child feels this way about her. They know that she is cheering on every single success in and out of the classroom. To have every child in the class feel that personal connection with the teacher is phenomenal. In addition to teaching everything in an engaging way, which we hear about every day after school , she always makes time for students to tell about their lives outside of school and make connections. This impact lasts long beyond second grade. We know that this is echoed throughout the community with anyone who has had her. She should absolutely be recognized for being an exceptional educator not just for teaching  the educational standards, but for modeling empathy  and collaboration everyday in the classroom."

Paul Yu, Daniels Run ES (Pictured) - View the Celebration!

"Mr. Paul Yu is always in the right place at the right time! On a daily basis, Mr. Yu is observed filling in the space to help others. Here are just a few examples of his collaborative spirit: At the beginning of the year, our building was evacuated before the school day began. Students were arriving for the day, and we needed a system to keep everyone safe. Mr. Yu immediately approached me and asked, how can I help? I handed him a pen and directions for parking buses in a nearby park, and Mr. Yu sprang into action. He greeted buses, maintained an accurate account of arrivals, directed traffic in the parking lot, and provided timely updates to the administrative team. Mr. Yu’s actions were paramount in ensuring a safe and orderly arrival for our bus drivers and riders. One day last month, during breakfast, the registers in the cafeteria were not working. A long line of students was forming as students verbally gave their name to the cafeteria manager. As I approached the cafeteria line, I immediately noticed that Mr. Yu was in action. He was working alongside the cafeteria manager to gather student names and make a note of purchases. His smile and calm voice helped everyone have a great start to the day. Mr. Yu generously gives of his time to help our school community. He truly exemplifies “FCPS Cares” in his daily work. I am extremely grateful for Mr. Paul Yu."

Liz Flaherty, Willow Springs ES

"Liz is the incredible website curator at Willow Springs Elementary School. While her official title is Student Information Assistant, Liz has become one of the premiere school website curators in the last two and a half years. At the start of the 2021-22 school year, Liz began adding school announcements and events to the WSES website. Since then, she has taken an incredible amount of ownership of the school website. What was once a reasonably static site has become one of the more dynamic FCPS sites. It’s rich content, such as the feature she created on the Willow Springs Bluebird Trail - https://willowspringses.fcps.edu/features/willow-springs-bluebird-trail - (in which she wrote, inserted a video, and added a photo gallery) have exemplified her dedication to creating web-accessible, mobile responsive pages that can be enjoyed equally on a phone or computer. The academic page she has created https://willowspringses.fcps.edu/academics invites families to learn about a particular grade level, where they are then presented with meaningful content (https://willowspringses.fcps.edu/academics/grade-levels/fourth-grade), including a photo of the teaching team, a link to each teacher’s staff profile school supplies needed for the year, a link to the FCPS handbook for that particular grade, and a link the curriculum page on the FCPS public website so that parents can see what their student will be learning for the year. She has enhanced each of the website’s pages by swapping in crisp, professional photos of students and teachers, while adding page headings, text accordions, slideshows, and videos, along with meaningful content that utilizes best practices for writing for the web. Her homepage tagline ‘Every Day is a Good Day at Willow Springs!’ has become part of the school brand. The WSES website feels like a welcoming porch that allows visitors to see a beautiful snapshot of the school, full of happy, engaged students and staff. Liz is constantly striving to improve her skillset as a website curator. She is consistently present in each monthly virtual school website chat. She puts into practice skills learned at those sessions and website tools that she learns how to use through the FCPS school web curator’s Schoology group, the school web curator’s manual, and a host of county-produced school website video tutorials. Her positive vibe is contagious, and she inspires me through her willingness to expand her skillset to make the Willow Springs Elementary School website one of the various best in our school system."

Eric Verchot, Sprague Technology Center

"Eric is supporting a pilot with quick turn around. He is collaborative, flexible, and patient in his work with multiple stakeholders. During a recent training to school-based stakeholders he was willing to work quickly to support the needs of schools and central office staff calmly behind the scenes. Additionally, he is a willing partner as we work to ensure rollout is a success. Thank you to Eric for his efforts on behalf our students and staff."

Karen Durocher, Willow Oaks Admin Center

Philip Jeffers, Sprague Technology Center

"The Adult ESOL Team would like to extend its ongoing appreciation to Philip Jeffers for the support he provides for our technology needs. For years now, Philip has gone above and beyond to help us problem-solve to meet staff and student tech needs, track and maintain our equipment, troubleshoot problems, and in general answer our sometimes-less-than-tech-savvy questions. In all cases, he provides his services with the utmost professionalism, respect and amiability. We are so grateful to have a colleague like Philip, who always has our backs."

James MacKenzie, Chantilly HS

"I wrote to Coach Mac introducing my child whose goal was to get into Chantilly HS swim team. Coach Mac was very patient answering my questions and encouraged my child to keep on swimming and giving his effort. My child did get into CHS swim team as a freshman and he was thrilled! Hearing from my child, Coach Mac built a strong rapport with all his swimmers. They happily hang out with him regularly before school and during Charger time. Additionally, I am very thankful he made it possible for my child to take the swim team group photo and be the first person for the individual photo so that he was able to attend a FCPS interview for a voluntary service project. Coach Mac devoted numerous hours strategizing for all the meets by monitoring the timing of all his swimmers. Though my child did not qualify for District, he is extremely proud to be part of the team. Congratulations to Coach Mac for coaching the boys for winning the Concorde District Championship! Coach Mac, you're the best! My swimmer looks forward to the next season."

Terri Smith, South County HS

"Terri Smith is an incredible Broadcast Journalism teacher. She dedicates countless hours to working with students, filming content, and editing videos to help promote our administrative concerns, school activities, and student achievements. She works tirelessly to develop the skills of her students and support their independence with the broadcast program. In addition to being an incredible Broadcast teacher, Terri is an integral part of our English department. She is always working to help support her colleagues and contribute to the department. Terri also  consistently and effectively communicates with our administrative and student services teams to help ensure that her 12th grade students have what they need to graduate. Terri consistently goes above and beyond her job responsibilities every day and makes a huge difference in our school. We are so lucky to have her at South County High School!"

Andrew Harding, Lake Braddock SS

"I'll keep it simple; Andrew Harding is amazing! Andrew goes above and beyond daily, taking on challenges from working with students one-on-one to build their understanding, helping students catch up, contributing to content, forming meaningful connections with students and seamlessly diffusing challenging situations that often arise in our classes. Andrew is an active participant in running class and all students and staff benefit from him being in class. He is thoughtful, compassionate, detailed, and a curious learner himself. The Lake Braddock community is thankful to have Andrew on our team! Keep up the great work and thank you for all you do!"

Eric Eichelberger, Lake Braddock SS

Melanie Maahs, Cardinal Forest ES

"Melanie Maahs, was my daughter's first-grade teacher last school year. She recently reached out to me, letting me know that my daughter had made her a card and dropped it off to her. I will forever be grateful to Mrs. Maahs, due to the fact that when my children returned to Cardinal Forest last school year, they tested positive for COVID-19 on the second day of school. Long story short. I have a big family so we were unable to self-isolate. So we were ordered to remain in the house for 21 days, until the health department cleared us. Mrs. Maahs made sure that my children had learning materials, books, activities etc. She played a huge part in the learning curve that my first grader experienced when returning to in-person learning."

- a Cardinal Forest ES parent

Aaron Mynes, Chantilly HS

"My child's goal is to get into CHS Chamber Orchestra but was placed in Philharmonic after the incoming freshmen audition. He was discouraged with the placement and I shared with Mr. Mynes my concerns last summer. To my surprise, Mr. Mynes reached out (with my permission) to my child explaining the reasons. He was able to calm him down and as a result of that extra effort, my child was motivated to devote more practice. Recently, he shared with us that Mr. Mynes's class has been so enjoyable especially when he shared his life experience with his students. My child plans to take orchestra for the next 3 years and I'm glad he has a caring teacher whom he can look forward to every year. Thank you Mr. Mynes."

Joni White, Gatehouse Admin Center

"Joni is a true asset to the Office of Auditor General. Joni joined the office during the pandemic, and was able to navigate the new work in a complete remote environment, in no time. Joni exercised highest level of ethics in her work as the senior auditor, while she always thinks with the perspectives of her audit clients, what recommendations will make the most sense to implement and add the most value. If you ask any of Joni’s audit clients, they will likely tell you that Joni is more as a “friend” than an auditor. This is a testimony that Joni gained acceptance and trust from others. Joni led all school audits beautifully with respect and objectivity. The office is very proud of you, Joni! You always stay focused and offer exceptional service to the audit clients."

Esther Ko, Gatehouse Admin Center

Stephanie Keller, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"We are going to miss Stephanie as our route supervisor on team 36. (Transportation). I have heard from many on our team that she  made a huge impact on the morale of our drivers and attendants. Not only with her willingness to jump in and help with route coverage, but also with her non complacency when it came to driver and attendants concerns. She has been VERY proactive! She hasn’t forgotten what it’s like to be a school bus driver in these very trying times. Hat’s off to Stephanie. We definitely need more of the leadership qualities that she’s exhibited."

Rachel Morris, Laurel Hill ES

"Mrs. Morris spearheads efforts at Laurel Hill to close literacy gaps by planning and leading weekly literacy CLTs at each grade level. Mrs. Morris leads teachers to assess, analyze, teach, and intervene with readers in effective ways. She dove head first into the Science of Reading and has directed staff members triumphantly into the waters with her. Mrs. Morris empowers teachers to outgrow themselves, keep an open mind, and learn new things. She has given us the tools and the grace to try and try again. Teachers in all grades have been able to provide struggling readers with the fundamental reading instruction they so desperately need because of the leadership of Mrs. Morris. In addition to leading literacy teachers, she also regularly meets with the neediest readers in our school in intervention groups. Mrs. Morris is tireless and relentless in her work, creating and sharing resources, meeting weekly with teams in CLTs, hosting regular office hours, and being a sounding board with an open-door policy for all educators in the building. This school year, Mrs. Morris brought a special and unique learning space, called the Literacy Lab, to life. Mrs. Morris plans and co-teaches with each teacher at each grade level (K-6) to make the magic of the Literacy Lab happen. Students and teachers eagerly await their visit each month. During Literacy Lab, Mrs. Morris models highly-effective instructional practices for teachers while providing students with engaging opportunities for learning in literacy. The planning and execution of this dynamic learning space have strengthened collaboration, knowledge of the curriculum, and effectiveness of instructional practices for all teachers at Laurel Hill. What a monumental achievement Mrs. Morris continues to attain month after month in the Literacy Lab! The innovation and creativity Mrs. Morris displays are inspirational. This year, she worked with the administration and the PTA to fund an initiative called "One School, One Book." This massive undertaking will ignite a shared love of reading for all Laurel Hill community members as we read, discuss, and participate in culminating activities around the text. Mrs. Morris leads the "One School, One Book" Committee of Laurel Hill staff members to ensure this monumental literacy initiative is successful."

Stephanie Rice, Davis Career Center

"Stephanie was a phenomenal help with coordinating my self-advocacy lesson with the STEP students this week. She offered resources, technical support, and was present throughout the lesson as I needed help. With her help it was a great experience! Beyond just this day/experience, Stephanie is always working collaboratively with me and is so invested in the student's success while at Davis and as they transition. I appreciate all she does and enjoy our work together!"

JonPaul Sousa, Chantilly HS

"Early Spring of 2022, I emailed Mr. JonPaul, guessing he might be my rising 9th grader's counselor based on the last name, regarding the request for the 1st period of the school day to be free since my child will be taking online Chinese. Later in June, I received his response noting he will schedule my child to arrive late to school on B day. Since my child was still in middle school back then, my request may be too early, but Mr. JonPaul remembered and marked the email for follow-up. However, my indecisiveness led to switching back and forth between my child arriving late or leaving early after school. Again, Mr. JonPaul was very patient. When my child became officially a CHS student, I emailed him a few times and always received his response within a day.  I am thankful for Mr. JonPaul for his kindness, patience, and professionalism. He has definitely made a lasting positive impact for this freshmen mom!"

Nevan Carter, Sprague Technology Center

"I have had the pleasure of interacting with Nevan on multiple occasions through calls to the IT Service Desk. He is always calm, patient, knowledgeable and respectful. I often assist the employees I supervise with IT calls and Nevan truly stands out. On January 26, 2023, OTS had their professional development training and I was assisting an employee in obtaining Google backup codes. I do not know if the IT service desk was debriefed on what our training entailed, or if he just ascertained information regarding our training via previous calls. Nevan used this information to go above and beyond to assist the employee on the call, walking them through the initial steps of the training."

Kristen Bacus, Lorton Transportation Center

------

Asmahan Abed, Davis Career Center

"Asmahan has an amazing work ethic and seemingly endless energy. Each day she comes in to our building with a smile and a proactive willingness to jump in and support students and colleagues. She voices her ideas and is a valued member of our staff community at Davis. This week in particular, she assisted another PHTA in leading a classroom while the teacher was out sick without a sub. It would have been easy to sit back and wait, but she was proactive and thoughtful in keeping students engaged during an out-of-routine week without their teacher. She found work for students to do, upheld classroom routines, and did it all with a smile!"

Carli McIntosh, Davis Career Center

------

Janelle Pace, Newington Forest ES

"I want to thank Ms. Pace for being such a warm, welcoming, and concerned teacher for my child. My child was having some trouble with his peers and Ms. Pace met with the students that day and responded back with outcomes. She additionally used her teacher planning and in-service day to stop to meet with my wife and I after a training day at another site. That is way above and beyond the call of duty of our teachers!  She genuinely cares for my child as well as all of her students in her class. She creates a warm and welcoming environment for her students and parents; working to create a safe and inclusive place for her students to interact, grow, and work together. Thank you for all you do!"

- a Newington Forest ES parent

Amber Belloni, Lake Braddock SS

"Amber Belloni has been a tremendous new addition to the Lake Braddock Secondary School HS Student Services team. She is often the face of the department, being the first contact for students, parents, and professionals inside and outside of LBSS, making everyone feel warmly welcomed and respected. Newly enrolled students experience incredibly smooth transitions due to her efforts to connect them to caring adults and students. She has empowered school counselors to best meet the needs of all students through her hard work to gather and organize pertinent educational data, contacts, and information to ensure a smooth transition. Her organization and systems she has implemented this year have elevated the HS Student Services Department to best serve all students and families. Our department feels incredibly lucky to have her!"

- Karisa Gearheart, Whitman MS

------

Laura Hanley, South County HS

"Laura Hanley is an integral part of the South County High School FAMILY and the fibers that make South County such a special place. Laura is an outstanding counselor who is always willing to help students or colleagues on need. This school year, Laura's alphabet had to be adjusted to balance the counselor caseloads amongst the 8 counselors for 2300 at SCHS. Even though a few of Laura's students went to another counselor she mindfully transitioned the kiddos to her colleague while always communicating to students, "I am still here if you ever need me". There have been several times this school year, when I have needed Laura's counsel or second set of eyes when evaluating and strategizing for student solutions and Laura does not hesitate to help. Most recently, Laura left me a voicemail from her car, with her daughter in the car, after work wanting to connect to review an educational plan for a FORMER student to ensure we present the best educational plan. This simple single act is a small window to the care, commitment, and love that Laura showers the SCHS community with. Small acts to not go unnoticed and I am extremely fortunate to work with Laura."

- Claudia Pirouzan-Jones, South County HS

------

Brianna Graves, Davis Career Center

"Brianna played a pivotal role in supporting a student and his mom during visits to possible service providers. The student will transition in June and determining which program might be appropriate to support him after FCPS is a big decision for the family. Having Brianna present to support her student (+ mom and the interpreter) as well as provide first-hand information to the adult-service providers truly helped the meetings feel inclusive and successful. The student's mom was very grateful for the support of the school and felt confident in the decision to visit the two programs and their ability to possibly support her son if he applies and is accepted. Thank you, Brianna, for being a fierce advocate for your students and for your willingness to participate in this particular student's tours and information sessions. Our caring culture is thriving because of actions such as these that truly demonstrate how we fully support our families and our community!"

- Chad Clayton, Davis Career Center

------

Kenneth Goss, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"Mr. Kenney has been my daughter’s bus driver from elementary to high school and my daughter constantly remarks on how kind, friendly and positive he is every day with all the kids. She (and I!) feel so lucky to have had the same wonderful bus driver all these years. Thank you, Mr. Kenney, for keeping kids safe and happy!"

- a Madison HS parent

------

Angela Berst, Hunt Valley ES

"Ms. Angela has went above and beyond to care for my daughter's auto immune disease while she is attending the school. Being that this is the first year for my daughter being in a brick and mortar setting, Ms. Angela has done such a good job ensuring an easy transition for my daughter to be able to perform in school while maintaining her health. We are truly appreciative and so grateful to experience the level of concern and care she gives to my daughter."

Mark Gomperts, Robinson SS

"Mark Gomperts dropped his schedule for the day to be able to come to South County High School last minute and support the staff and students through a difficult time. We are incredibly grateful for everything he did for us that day!"

Daniel Porter, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"Dan is simply outstanding. Dan supports FCPS and SCHS as the administrator for the SCHS TSRC program. Being an IAS administrator is extremely busy as they support numerous FCPS sites. However, the administrative team at SCHS is beyond impressed with Dan's presence and responsiveness with supporting in any way. Dan is a proactive communicator, who is solution focused, patient, and understands the mindfulness of timelines to support our community. In a recent event when we reached out for support, Dan made himself available to connect after work hours, connected with his team, and supported SCHS with ensuring we would be able to present viable options to supports our students. We are grateful to be able to utilize TSRC as a concurrent support, but it makes a world of a difference to have an outstanding supportive colleague too. Thank you to Dan and his team for their willingness to take time away off hours to support. We are extremely grateful for the grace, flexibility, and ongoing support."

Mel Davidson, Fairhill ES

"I cannot thank Mel enough for supporting my daughter throughout Kindergarten. Through good and bad times, she has always sent me small details about my daughter's day that help us understand so much about her days and her attitude at school. I am overly grateful, especially due to the fact that neither my husband nor I attended the US school system."

Georgiana Rati, Sandburg MS

"Ms. Rati went "above and beyond" to help me make a parent phone call this week. It was extremely helpful to have her participate in the call (given the parents speak limited English and needed some of the information translated for them). We were able to communicate my concerns about the student's behavior in school and already I have seen some improvement with the student this week. Thanks Ms. Rati!"

Dorothy Kellie Healy, Sandburg MS

------

Addie Su, Sandburg MS

"Ms. Su goes above and beyond for her students and her coworkers. Yesterday, my husband was sick and I needed to take an emergency day off. Ms. Su quickly responded to a message asking her to arrange sub plans for my classroom. She is always so kind and so helpful, she is quick to respond with a supportive message and to help without thinking if it is going to add extra work to her plate. This is my first year teaching middle school and she has taken extra time to share lessons, demonstrate plans, order supplies, and check in that I am doing alright. Ms. Su is not only an excellent teacher, but a fantastic co-worker. She makes coming to school such a pleasant experience. I'm never stressed out because I know I have Ms. Su on my team. She is supportive of all of the teachers in our hallway and she is a ray of light in the 500's hallway!"

"This past weekend Ms. Irish led 260 students in the South Lakes Pyramid Broadway Night. Students from the feeder elementary schools, Langston Hughes and South Lakes came together to put on show for students, families and community members. Thank you, Ms. Irish, for creating this for our students!"

Iraida Hagemann, Annandale Terrace ES

"Kind, dedicated, caring, bilingual, efficient and welcoming are adjectives that perfectly describe Mrs. Hagemann, one of our front office administrative assistants. She's a super multi-tasker and team player that works tirelessly on attendance, answers phones and parent questions in English and Spanish, and greets everyone to make sure they feel part of the Annandale Terrace community. She's worked here for over two decades and is dedicated to the students as she cares for them after school during late pickup or makes sure they receive their breakfast if they arrive late. When other co-workers are out she supports registration, substitute teachers, the health room and anything else that needs to be done. She's a wonderful employee, friend and co-worker to all that interact with her."

"My child came home from school today telling me all about what he had learned from his teacher, Mrs. Andress. They are currently learning about ancient Egypt in Social Studies. He asked to watch National Geographic shows about King Tut so he could share more with her. Mrs. Andress regularly connects with my child and encourages him to go above and beyond in what interests him. They problem solve together on the areas he struggles with. She is a true gem and we are grateful for her."

Ashley Lotfabadi, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"Ashley is an amazing resource for the Davis Career Center. Each time she visits (yesterday being no exception!), she shows up ready to dive in to support our staff who are dealing with students who are struggling behaviorally. Not only does Ashley present her knowledge as a behavior intervention teacher, she arrives on-scene ready to LISTEN and acknowledge staff concerns. She is professional, calm, and approachable in meeting rooms that can often be filled with tension, stress, and anxiety. She provides meaningful and thoughtful feedback and always follows up with notes and helpful resources that teams can use practically. In our meeting yesterday, she offered to come back and do more training/education or 1:1 conversations with specific staff members who she could sense might need a greater understanding of behavior and our population of students with developmental disabilities. Ashley is here for our students, here for our staff, and she shows up ready to support us! We appreciate her tremendously!!!"

Carmen Lofton Johnson, Hayfield SS

"Mrs. Lofton Johnson has been a stalwart in our hallways, and supporting our students all year. She has a calming approach, that can pierce even toughest exterior personalities of our students. She is extremely active in our hallways, building strong relationships, as well as providing real world guidance on a variety of issues. When required, Mrs. Lofton Johnson holds our students accountable for their actions, and teaches them how to make good and responsible decisions. In each case, she provides a nurturing supportive foundation for each student, and also explains to them in a language they understand, how each choice made, can and will have a consequence. On the Friday before Christmas Break, I was able to see Mrs. Lofton Johnson diffuse a very intense and difficult emotional outburst from one of my students. Mrs. Lofton Johnson was calm in the face of adversity, providing the student with care and compassion, helping the 9th grade student to calm down. Mrs. Lofton Johnson listened intently as the student related a very difficult emotional experience. She provided a safe place for our student to relate the experience, and Mrs. Lofton Johnson also provided detailed insight, which in turn, helped our student appreciate a different view. In regards to supporting and guiding the staff, she approaches each person and situation differently. Mrs. Lofton Johnson is extremely knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects, and as a former teacher, she understands the situations and issues teachers deal with. Thank you Mrs. Lofton Johnson for supporting and guiding the Hayfield Community, student and staff member alike. We are truly lucky to be able to work with you everyday!"

Bob Damato and Heather Hitz, Deer Park ES

"My son is in 4th grade strings at Deer Park. Last night, Mr. Damato and Mrs. Hitz joined the 4th grade students in their first ever performance. We learned that Mrs. Hitz and Mr. Damato did not have any musical background but learned how to play the bass and cello with students in order to model perseverance and show them that they can work hard and learn new things that can be challenging. This is a model of leadership we love seeing for our son and school community.  We know that time is limited as a school leader and taking the time to learn a new craft with students spoke volumes to the dedication and positive attitude Mr. Damato and Mrs. Hitz exude."

We have been dealing with especially high volume and complex cases this year and Kelly makes herself available to advise and provide on-site support that has made all the difference for our staff and especially our students who receive special education services. Even during a recent vacation with a 3-hour time zone difference, Kelly made herself available to the IEP team to support a challenging meeting from across the country. This is just one example of her commitment to her work and we appreciate her. Kelly is extremely knowledgeable, willing to lead by example, and is just a tremendous asset to our special education team in FCPS. Dana Lebkisher, Instructional Assistant, also gives time to the program in addition to her other assigned duties. Suzanne Bruens, South Lakes HS

"Suzanne Bruens is an incredible asset at South Lakes High School. As admin assistant for one of the sub-schools, she is often tasked with many tasks simultaneously and she handles it with grace and ease. Regardless of all that she is juggling, she always provides a warm welcome to the staff and students that cross her threshold. Suzanne goes above and beyond to support however she can. As an itinerant service provider, this partnership is invaluable and with my experience supporting across many schools it is exceedingly rare. If I request to reserve a space in her sub-school and it is unavailable, she will recommend another location that appears available and puts me in contact with the person who manages that other space to help confirm that I have a reliable location where I can work with my students. This simple gesture saves me from a great deal of additional effort on top of the already cumbersome list of scheduling challenges. When students are in need, she is calm, kind, and proactive. She truly cares about the students and their wellbeing, and Suzanne’s collaborative nature makes it easier to help other staff better support the students in their respective disciplines. Suzanne is a bright light in a challenging day/week. South Lakes HS is fortunate to have her and I consider myself among the luckiest to get to work with and alongside her! Heartfelt thanks for all that you do, Suzanne!"

Leigh Ashurst, Keene Mill ES

"We had a parent teacher conference, Mrs. Ashurst attended with us, and although the event itself was nothing special, it was just another example of the extraordinary impact she has in helping students, parents, and teachers connect in the educational environment. Mrs. Ashurst not only showed up after hours for this meeting, but she responded immediately to my questions and was able to help ease communications with my son. Leigh has an incredible way of socially and emotionally connecting with students overall. She has always responded to parents questions and concerns immediately and with the utmost professionalism and care. She provides helpful advice when needed to facilitate everyone’s success to include what I have seen of her interactions with the faculty. She provides direct emotional support when the faculty doesn't have the time to provide and that she is uniquely skilled at. She has been a tireless and steadfast supporter of my son for over 5 years now and is always there to lend her expertise. My son has matured so much under her care and Mrs. Ashurst is a treasure at Keene Mill that we would be lost without."

Stacy Gernatt, Laurel Ridge ES

"Ms. Gernatt is often at the top of the Kiss & Ride line in the afternoons. She is always smiling and waving at cars. Her role is to check kids off the list to alert the adults in the gym where the kids are waiting to be picked up. She gives everyone a big "thumbs up" once she's marked our kid; which alerts us to pull forward. On Friday, she asked me to roll down my window and said she had my son's coat on a table near her desk in the gym (she isn't even his PE teacher this year). I was elated! He had just received this coat as a Christmas gift and when we went to look for it earlier in the week in the Lost & Found, my son was upset it wasn't there. I wanted to say a big thank you to Ms. Gernatt for letting us know she had the coat but an even BIGGER THANK YOU for your warm smile and positive attitude. I messaged Dienson Ho, our School Board Office IT support, and he went above and beyond by trying to locate a reasonably priced adaptor in my final destination for the day. Dienson looked at the local Best Buy website, sent me the link to what I should purchase, and made recommendations for alternate charging cables that would be compatible with my laptop. He even explained why how to use the alternative cables and cords with Apple products as that is what I had access to. In the end, Dienson's advice helped, and I was able to charge my laptop using a cable at my son's final destination. She explored with the chef various positions they may have, and spoke about Davis' culinary program as a way of connecting our program with their workplace. Elizabeth gathered the chef's contact information and shared it with our culinary team, who passed it along to me. In speaking with Elizabeth it was clear that she is thinking creatively about employment options for our students upon their graduation and wants to see them thrive. Theresa Connell, Glasgow MA

"If they say that the library is the heart of the library, Theresa is the beat that keeps that heart going. Theresa is an exceptional library assistant in so many ways. Her work ethic goes above and beyond most that I've encountered. She greets each patron with a smile and a customer service attitude that is above par. Her primary focus is to guide students to become independent library users. She will drop whatever she is working on to show students how to use the library catalog and find requested titles on the shelves. She primarily reads middle grades and young adult fiction in order to recommend high quality reads for our students. She is a self-starter in the library and works on tasks without being told what needs to be done. When books come in from library services, she immediately begins processing them so that we can get them in the hands of students as quickly as possible. During classes in the library, Theresa never hesitates to jump into a lesson and provide help to students. Recently, I was working with a high needs class. Theresa saw that the teacher and I needed a helping hand working with the students and she did not hesitate to station herself at a table to help students work through the activity. Often, Theresa works on many tasks at once - helping with a class, popping over to the circulation desk to check out books, and greeting students who enter the library to find books. Theresa often works through her lunch break and stays after hours to complete the variety of tasks we work through each day. She enjoys the challenge of creating creative signage for our library displays and always helps me prepare for lessons. She is self-less in her work and her top priority is the library patrons and service to them. I couldn't ask for a better assistant to help run such an effective and engaging library program for our students and staff."

Michael Pettit, Sandburg MS

"I wanted to recognize Michael Pettit for the extraordinary work he did organizing the VGA testing. The information he shared before the test was clear and concise. On the day of testing, everything was extremely well-organized and easy to access. The zoom school-wide link and ability to have questions asked and answered quickly was a great new addition. And to have someone come by my classroom to pick up materials at the end of testing was also a nice addition. Great job Mr. Pettit and all those who helped!"

Chapin Eager, South County HS

"Ms. Eager has taken it upon herself to get to know each and every one of her students. During the academic days of emphasis, Ms. Eager had helpful and hopeful conversations with each of her students to gauge their interests and look forward to incorporate their interests and strengths into their future course selections. Ms. Eager was empathetic and supportive for each of her students, and she included her notes and recommendations for others, so that everyone could be on the same page to support the student."

It is clear that Ms. Fisher is invested in her students academic and emotional needs.  Not only does she foster an engaging, organized classroom that supports the process of learning, but she goes out of her way to make sure that her students feel safe and loved as part of the classroom community. She has helped my child forge new friendships and is quick to give a kind word. Kate McLaughlin, Fort Belvior Primary School

"My daughter had "Miss Mac" last year and the relationship still continues today. Not only with the daughter that was in her class, but with my other daughter as well. Currently, my husband is deployed, and a few adults in the building I know have a strong relationship with them and will go to them with big feelings. Miss Mac is one of them. While dropping off students, Miss Mac and I were able to talk for a moment and check in with the girls during this unusual time. I appreciate the time she not only gives my girls but me! She gives wonderful hugs that can cure any problem."

"Mrs. Brogan is a gem. As a military spouse herself she comes with a suitcase full of extra knowledge while working with students, teachers, staff, and families. I look forward to seeing Mrs. Brogan. Her attitude picks you up immediately. She is wonderful at validating our feelings and experiences. Mrs. Brogan doesn't work just at the school. As a military spouse, she is within the community and there are times when my family and Mrs. Brogan meet up in the Commissary and have little sessions. Her words are extremely valuable. FBPS and FCPS are very lucky to have her as an employee. She is truly make a positive influence on those she reaches."

Jessica Suh, Westfield HS

"Ms. Suh is my oldest child's Honors Geometry 9 teacher. He has not had the easiest adjustment to the workload of high school and the speed of his honors class. After reaching out to Ms. Suh in the first quarter she has been nothing but helpful to both myself and my son. My son has a 504 and she has been aware of his accommodations and sensitive to his fragile social status and how he may be perceived to his peers. She has worked with both my son after school and myself through email to help him be successful. I can see that she cares about her students and her work and we appreciate her caring for her students success."

"Mr. B (as he's mostly referred to) is a powerhouse of an engineering teacher! Not only are his lessons cutting edge, but his willingness to share his expertise with fellow engineering teachers is commendable. Although the start to the school year got off to a bumpy start, he was fully committed to making sure his students never missed a beat. In addition to taking care of his own classes, he continues to find the time to mentor other engineering teachers, and create content for their own classes. I cannot thank him enough for his passion."

Ashley Paz, Fort Hunt ES

"Mrs. Ashley Paz is someone I have wanted to imitate since I started working at Fort Hunt at the beginning of this school year. She is exceptional with classroom management not only when just directing her students, but even when guiding me considering I am also new. Her classroom continues to be a great environment where the kids can come to her with issues or for help but are also aware of her expectations as she makes those very clear. Mrs. Paz incorporates interactive lessons so the kids stay engaged, while simultaneously challenging them so they learn to push themselves to succeed. She is a pleasure to work with and I have thoroughly enjoyed helping in her room, and hope I continue to do so. I am appreciative of the ideal setting she provides for the kids (and myself) to learn and be the best we can be every day."

Will Lundregan, Fort Hunt ES

"I have not gotten to know Will well yet but from what I see with my eyeballs he is a fantastic new employee that is dedicated to working with not only his assigned students in Mrs. Pritchard's class, but with other students in the building. What is more impressive is that he has the patience to deal with any situation that arises with students. He is calm, cool and collected as he tries to redirect students no matter if in PE or elsewhere in the school. I also saw just this week him surprising a 3rd grade student with lunch to make her day. This is just a little of what I see Will do each and every day here at Fort Hunt. This is why he deserves a thank you for making our school a better community. I look forward to seeing him grow as an employee in the education field and continuing to make an impact on our students lives."

Emily Sefrin, Union Mill ES

"Mrs. Sefrin has gone above and beyond as a kindergarten teacher this year. She has created a welcoming and engaging learning environment for our child from day one. Mrs. Sefrin communicates frequently with an in depth newsletter of what students are working on in school, what is coming up in the future and how we can support at home. It is clear Mrs. Sefrin prioritizes relationships with the students. One example of this is she mailed TWO personalized postcards/letters over winter break to check in on our child and ask how break was going. As a result of Mrs. Sefrin's expertise, we have seen steady academic growth in our child this year. Our child is able to clearly articulate and apply various strategies learned in the classroom at home as a result of Mrs. Sefrin. We are grateful of the passion, dedication and caring Mrs. Sefrin has provided this year and could not have dreamed of a better experience for our child."

She's always pleasant, smiles and waves when she sees you, my daughter says she "keeps everyone safe but always has fun music on the bus" and is "the best bus driver she's ever had." Eric Greiling, South County HS

"Mr. Greiling is an outstanding educator, human, reflective thinker, and champion for students. At SCHS Mr. Greiling supports our school as a mathematics teacher often teaching Calculus. A part of SCHS SIIP ties to supporting student achievement with higher level courses to maximize their academic potential. The classroom safe space that Mr. Greiling creates is not missed, especially when taking a course that some might consider to be stressful like Calculus. This school year, when a senior was a finalist for a full ride Posse Scholarship but panicking on their eligibility/selection for the scholarship due to their first quarter achievement in Calculus. Mr. Greiling wrote a letter of support on behalf of the student explaining that with the start of the quarter and difficult content, at times students are not able to secure the "A" that many aspire to earn in their courses. However, the current grade is not an accurate reflection of what this student was capable of earning. Mr. Greiling's support letter shared his belief in the students potential and abilities to succeed beyond the initial noted achievement. Mr. Greiling's willingness to support our students achieve their dreams and be afforded tremendous opportunities in securing the Posses full ride scholarship to Bucknell University embodies his leading with love, understanding, and ongoing support for our students. The SCHS community is truly blessed to have him on our staff. We are grateful for his willingness to support exploration of alternative methods and supports with our aligned vision on doing what is best for our students. It goes without a doubt that Mr. Greiling's letter of support helped our senior secure her scholarship and it would be remiss of our school to not brag about how he is an incredible human.  #OneStallion"

"I help facilitate student presentations for the Fairfax County Youth Leadership Program (YLP). The culminating project for student ambassadors (high school seniors) is to present their experience with YLP and in local government to FCPS Civics students. Roxanne graciously volunteered to host a student ambassador this fall. This past week, we were notified that one student was unable to schedule their presentation with their assigned teacher, so I reached out to a few teachers to help this student. Roxanne immediately responded that she would help this student. Her willingness to help an FCPS student, whom she has never met, shows what type of educator Roxanne is. Thank you Roxanne!"

"There was a fire in the library over break and Toliver has done an amazing job of coordinating his custodial team, communicating with administration, facilities, and the librarians to make sure that the cleaning is done quickly and to a high standard. Toliver has put in countless hours of overtime during the holidays to get the library ready to be reopened quickly and safely. On top of that, he has advocated for what the library and students need, and has worked far above his job description by communicating with outside groups and central office, and completing high level needs analysis, on top of his regular duties and keeping our school clean and student ready."

She is always very engaging and actively involved as I present my lessons. Her friendly personality encourages my students to engage with her and stay on task as we work on expressive and receptive language communication. Connie will share information with parents if they are present, during the lesson which has made the carry over in the home so important for continual learning. Connie will take detailed notes as i am teaching and shares them with me, so I have a better perspective of what the students understand and I have a clear language samples (both in English and Spanish) in order to determine progress towards communication notes. Aziz Elhayani, Woodson IT Center

"The projector in my classroom was not working upon our return from winter break. I submitted a Request IT ticket which my TSPEC helped direct to the correct department. Aziz came out to Hunters Woods within 24 hours of the request being submitted. He inspected my projector, replaced the lamp, cleaned the filters, adjusted the image and reset the resolution to make my projected images crisp. He even showed me a few tips for using my remote to adjust the image. He was very friendly and went beyond just popping in a new light bulb. I really appreciate his attention to not just getting my classroom equipment back in working order, but making sure it was functioning at its best. Great service!"

Milagro Perez-Tobar and Team, Lorton Transportation Center

"My son left his instrument on the bus prior to winter break, not only was it not his regular bus and driver, it was a substitute bus. We were both stressed not knowing what to do. I looked up the area Transportation team to call/email them to see if they can locate the instrument. During the break, Milagro contacted me right away to let me know they located the instrument. The following week, she dropped it off at the school and kept in contact with me to let us know that we could pick it up. I appreciate her going above and beyond and showing such kindness and willingness to help us at a time when schools were on a break and not operating fully. I'm sure there are numerous situations like ours, and we take for granted what bus drivers and transportation does day in and day out. Much of what you do goes unseen, but I wanted to say that we appreciate you very much!"

Carlie Oddo, Eagle View ES

"My daughter is in Ms. Oddo's 3rd grade class. I just want to commend her for restoring my daughter's love of school. My daughter had a terrible experience with her 2nd grade teacher who was cruel and mean. She made my daughter scared to participate in class and hate to go to school. Ms. Oddo has been everything a good teacher should be. She has been friendly, encouraging and very helpful. She uses Class Dojo to communicate with parents. She gives out Class Dojo points to students who do well in class and stay on task. My daughter gets so excited whenever she earns Class Dojo points. She loves going to school again. When my daughter was out sick for a week in November, Ms. Oddo sent class assignments for her to work on from home if she felt well enough to do them. This allowed my daughter to still learn and not fall too far behind. I thank Ms. Oddo for restoring my daughter's love of school again. Her positive reinforcement and encouraging nature has allowed my daughter to flourish in 3rd grade."
