Central Office
Michael Vu, Stonecroft Transportation Center
"I am writing so that my kids’ bus driver, Mr. Michael Vu (Westbriar Elementary School bus #5), is recognized for doing an OUTSTANDING job. Mr. Vu is a new bus driver for us. We’ve had other good bus drivers in the past, but Mr. Vu stands apart from them all. My kids come home from school saying that their bus driver is so nice to them. When I ask what he does, they don’t mention anything specific but tell me that his demeanor and respect for them are friendly. Mr. Vu will always say “hello” to the kids in a polite way. He is welcoming, sincere, and not over the top. My kids feel he respects them, so in turn, they respect him. Mr. Vu saw that it was raining one day and since they are the last kids off the bus, Mr. Vu pulled up the street closer to the house so they wouldn’t get as wet. It is very thoughtful for a bus driver to do this and we have never had it happen before. My son forgot his school binder one morning and when I ran down the street to give it to him, Mr. Vu politely opened the door so that I could hand it to my son. He smiled and said, “not to worry, it always happens”. He didn’t seem irritated at all that he had to stop the bus for a moment. What a delightful response when I was frantic trying to run the binder to my son. Kids can tell if someone is being sincere or not. They recognize that some adults act one way in front of kids and another way when parents are around. They like Mr. Vu because he is always sincere in treating the kids nicely. He isn’t over the top, he is always polite and welcoming, and he gets respect because he gives it to the kids. With 3 kids of my own, I know that driving with them can be stressful at times. I can’t imagine the peace a bus driver must have with several kids all at one time. For that same individual to go about their work in such a pleasant welcoming way, really affects the people around them. Our family is very fortunate to have someone like Mr. Vu start my kid's school day in such a positive way. His positivity and demeanor affect my kids and they have a better outlook on their day because of him. I thank you for placing Mr. Vu on our school route! If there is anything you can do to recognize/reward him, please do so. I would hate for FCPS to lose such a wonderful individual in a position that I feel isn’t recognized as much as a teacher or administrator. My kid's school day starts and ends with the positivity Mr. Vu always seems to exude to my kids. What a great way to set the outlook on school for my kids! As my son says, Mr. Vu is “the greatest bus driver we have had in our years at Westbriar!” Please, please, please find a way to recognize and reward what an outstanding individual Mr. Vu is to FCPS!"

Barbara Posey – South Lakes HS
"Barbara is such a bright spot in my day. Every day she greets me with a friendly smile and a nice conversation. I am especially grateful for the positive interactions that she has with our students. She uses the connections that she makes with students, by having them do community service with her after school. It gives Barbara a chance to get to know them and form a bond, plus, it gives the students a chance to get a glance, into how hard Barbara works, to keep our school clean. They get the opportunity to appreciate what her daily job functions are and how, if they follow the rules and practice respect, it takes some of the burden off of her. She is kind, resourceful and one of a kind."
- Melissa LaBarre, South Lakes HS
"It takes a village to raise and educate our children. Barbara Posey is one of the most hard-working and caring custodians in our building. Three years ago, when I first arrived at South Lakes, I approached Barbara and asked her if we had a program for students to do community service by helping the custodians as an intervention. She saw this conversation as an opportunity to build relationships with students who struggled to make good choices and was “all in” from the beginning. She was so eager to get this program started. I immediately started using her as my community service contact and gave her a couple of clients. The students stayed after school with her for a couple of hours and Barbara was an amazing mentor during those hours. She tells me to this day that she still talks to those students and they recognize her as an adult in the building that they can trust. This program has grown so much and all students who help the custodians as community service reflect that it was a good experience, and they comment that they appreciate the opportunity to be able to meet the custodial staff. On top of working with students doing community service, she is efficient with keeping our building clean and organized for all our stakeholders. She makes sure that our building is comfortable and that everyone feels connected and welcome. I am so proud to work with Barbara and I look forward to her smile and kind words every day. She is very deserving of this FCPS Cares!"
- Amy Balint, South Lakes HS
"Barbara is one of our custodians who helped all of her co-workers receive the flu shot that we offered at South Lakes on October 1st. She stood with all of them while they filled out the forms and got their shot. She’s always so positive and we were just so impressed with her commitment to helping the other custodians get the flu shot."

Samya Salih, Davis Career Center
"Miss S is a quiet and calming presence in our community who is always present with a hello and a supportive word for her students and her colleagues. She supports our caring culture by building positive relationships with students both in the classroom and at the Marriott Tysons Corner worksite. Her guidance and support of our students as they build their soft skills, increase independence, and expand awareness of their interests help lead to more positive outcomes for students when they transition out of public school. Thank you, Miss S, for all that you do, in your own quiet way, to support our DCC community!"

Iris Stubblefield, Tracy Hamilton and Alaise Rudder, Mount Vernon HS Bryant HS - View a Feature!
"Iris, Tracy and Alaise were teaching the summer credit recovery program when they noticed a student was not feeling well. He is not a native English speaker and did not know how to access help for a dental problem. These teachers did an extensive amount of leg work including arranging low cost appointments and arranging for transportation for the student to take care of a dental issue that was so significant the doctor said it could have been life threatening."
We are so grateful for our unsung heroes.

Fabienne Gustave, Centreville HS
"Fabienne is by far one of the most dedicated staff members at CVHS. She is an IA in the special education department and works mostly with the Cat A and Cat B class. I have the pleasure of working with her in my SGA class as she assists the 5 students in my program with autism. She is a constant source of support, positive energy, and entertainment for all of the students. She consistently goes above and beyond for her students as they fine tune their social skills and professional work skills. Most recently during our homecoming festivities she escorted 2 of her students during the senior walk out for the pep rally and escorted them as they represented the class of 2022 on the homecoming court. She walked with them on to the field during the pep rally and made sure she was present during the parade so they would feel comfortable. She also stayed late after the football game to make sure that her students got home safely. On Saturday night I noticed that one of her students attended the dance alone so, at her request from the evening before, I texted her to notify her. She immediately came to the homecoming dance in her best dress and matching high tops to dance the night away with this particular student. When I told her how amazing she was she replied "I love that kid and I would never want her to spend the night alone dancing by herself". Fabienne aka Ms. Fabs is a wonderful person and educator. She is a role model not only to her students but to her peers as well. I wish everyone was as dedicated to these kids as she is. Ms. Fabs, I love you!"

Wendy Beaumont – Little Run ES - View a Feature!
"Ms. Wendy Beaumont has done an exceptional job before and throughout the pandemic to encourage kids to read. Prior to the pandemic, she partnered with the PTA to sponsor monthly summer library sessions, where kids could check out books and socialize with others, and particularly kids moving to the area who wanted to make new friends and get comfortable with their new school. The PTA would also provide her a small stipend so that she could special order books that were temporarily unavailable with the County. During the early virtual phase of the pandemic, she spearheaded the school’s “Book Bus Program,” sending books home with students once each week. She often would include extra books for the voracious readers, and if a book request was unavailable, she would find a similar book to send home with the students to encourage them to expand their choices in books. Now that we are back in school, she has resumed ordering new books for students, working with teachers to find books relevant to the curriculum, and setting out for display books that would be of interest and the proper difficulty level for students during library time. She also sponsored an artificial pumpkin decorating contest for October, where the pumpkin had to be a character in a book. Many students at Little Run ES have learned to read, or read more challenging books (e.g.: chapter books) specifically due to the passion, skill, and hard work of Ms. Beaumont."

Mike Hardy, Sprague Technology Center
"Mr. HARDY was generous in his time and knowledge. He helped me put make a clay wedding table. Once I explained my intentions of flipping over canvas boards & drill them into a table, he brought drills & other tools and took time out of his day to create this table for the art studio. It's working wonderfully and I am so grateful for his expedient applications in putting the wedging table together for my students to use. Just a wonderful, caring person."

Chris Day, Lorton Center
"Just wanted to send you a thank you to Chris Day who help on Saturday 10/23/21. We appreciate you being our driver to Band Assessment. You arrived on time, were very amenable to our schedule, and were very easy to talk to. Special recognition goes to you for your help after you dropped us off. A student lost a necklace on your bus. I was able to quickly and easily communicate with you. Within 15 minutes of my text, you had found it, offered to come back to our school to return it, and drove all the way back to Edison to do so. We are all grateful as it was a treasured item. You went above and beyond and you have our appreciation!"

Allie Resch and Becky Smith, Hollin Meadows ES
"Ms. Resch and Ms. Smith both took the time on a Saturday evening to come see my daughter cheer at her last football game. This was my daughter’s first time cheering, and she was very excited to be part of the squad and would fill her teachers in on all the details. Ms. Resch has been an amazing emotional champion for my daughter, and Ms. Smith has been a much needed safe place while at school, and to have them come to her event, on a weekend, meant the world to my daughter."

"I am new to Bonnie Brae Elementary School and I would like to commend the admin team for everything they have done and everything they are continuing to do for the students, staff and community of BBES. From the moment of my interview, I was caught up in the caring and acceptance of this wonderful admin team. These dedicated professionals all work incredibly hard, and are constantly adjusting their schedules to meet the needs of students and staff. They remind me of firefighters in the respect that if there is a need in the building they drop everything (whether it is during their lunch or while they are replying to correspondence) and go. This admin team is the epitome of FCPS cares in that no matter how busy they are they always take the time to greet students and staff, and follow up and follow through with meeting student and staff needs. All of these ladies are incredible professionals who go above and beyond every day. They work hard and are always focused on what is best for the students. "Daviana works as a Region 3 ESOL Resource and has been extremely supportive of the ESOL team here at Riverside. She is extremely positive, knowledgeable and intentional. She not only supports the team during CLT meetings, she meets with teachers to support their planning, she observes them, and reflects with them. Daviana has helped me, as an administrator, grow in my knowledge of ESOL best practices. Working with her has not only supported my thinking but has also shifted my thinking as she has introduced me to new ways of thinking about assessing our ELs and the impact of our ESOL team. She is viewed as an outsider who happens to be an expert but rather a partner who has so much to offer and is also willing to grow. Zulma Perez Pagan, Fort Hunt ES
"I have the great fortune of spending mornings with Zulma Perez in her classroom. Her classroom is as warm and inviting as she is. Her classroom is a reflection of her in so many ways. It’s friendly, and relaxed. All her students are called “my friends” and in what could easily be a chaotic classroom/year, she beautifully manages all the hiccups and personalities that cross her path. It is a wonderful way to spend my morning and I can see by how the kids behave that they feel safe, comfortable, challenged and they love her classroom, which is so important -- especially after re-entering in-person learning. Plus, she has plants and fish and snails and they all have names chosen by the kids! Kristin Sheppard, Centreville HS
"Kristin is our team lead for World History 1. Of all the CLTs in Social Studies, this CLT "enjoys" a plethora of extra responsibilities and stresses. Since we moved from a multiple choice SOL to a Project Based Assessment (PBA), Social Studies classroom teaching had to shift to best prepare students. Additionally, World History 1 teachers have to assess multiple PBAs for every student over the year. Kristin has done a great job leading the World History CLT understand the new responsibly and shift instruction to prepare students."

I was recently on leave for a family emergency for an extended period of time and Lauren stepped in and managed our class all alone for four weeks, carrying more than her fair share of the work. I am absolutely grateful for the support as it meant I could step away and focus on my family and for our friendship over the last few years. She's an incredible work partner, no project is too wild for us to tackle together, an asset to Westfield with her school spirit and involvement AND a wonderful friend. Thanks Lauren!"

Bryan Buser, Gatehouse Admin Center
"I was recently away on leave for a family emergency and a huge website project was due at our school. I reached out to Bryan to ask for help and he not only stepped in, but took on the entire task, communicating with my school team and seeing this project through to completion. I'm so grateful for Bryan's help and because of it, I was able to spend time with my family in a time that we needed to be together. Bryan is always incredibly responsive and supportive with all things communication and webpage related and I shouldn't be surprised, he was just as responsive when this massive ask came in. It took such a weight off my shoulders and I'm so very grateful."

Joseph Wieland, Westfield HS
"I was recently away on leave for a family emergency and my partner in all things instructional at Westfield handled so many things that came up, on top of his coaching role. I'm so grateful for his partnership, but even more than that, for his friendship. Joe stepped in to cover events I had scheduled, respond to questions and emails and support staff in so many ways, in addition to checking in with me personally and even taking care of my office plants so I didn't come back to sad, dead plants after the time away! I am struggling to find words for how much this meant to me and I'm absolutely grateful for this partnership and friendship. It's hard to believe we just started working together this year!"

This is true support and friendship and I'm not sure how I would have gotten through the family emergency without the three of them. In addition to helping to support my school, they also regularly checked in with me and were so genuinely supportive that I can't find words to thank them enough. This is what a caring culture is all about."

I am so thankful she has a kindergarten background as she helps all of her first graders transition to "real" in-person learning! She devotes so much time to supporting her students and her devotion is greatly appreciated by the families of her students. The Cub Run Community is lucky to have Mrs. Jensen!"

"Virtual Kindergarten was no joke last year, both for parents and teachers. Mrs. Sefrin handled every day with amazing professionalism and patience. When we returned to the school building, my daughter was rather anxious. She took time every day to check in with my daughter (and me!) to help ease the transition. My daughter, now in first grade, still loves seeing Mrs. Sefrin at dismissal every day. Mrs. Sefrin greets every student, current and past, with such enthusiasm. Cub Run is so lucky to have her!"

Our family looks forward to hearing the stories from Mr. Keay’s class over dinner each day my child has his class. Christina Metzker, Twain MS
"Christy is vital in our classroom community. Although she is assigned to specific students as the Special Education teacher, Christy works with and differentiates for each and every student. I don't think any student knows which teacher is "theirs." When I was out for two weeks, Christy ran all of our team-taught classes, along with her own self-contained classes. This was done on top of all of the paperwork and data collection she does for our students with IEPs and her own special education caseload. Christy adapts all lessons to ensure they are visually clear and organized. She holds high academic and behavioral expectations for our students, making our school community a more caring and hard-working one."

"These teachers make up the bulk of our Science 8 CLT. One teacher began the year on maternity leave, and no long term sub picked up the job. These consummate professionals came together and developed a plan to support the ~125 students across 5 class periods who would have a revolving door of substitute teachers for the 1st quarter. Each of them provided assistance with lesson planning, while some provided assistance with in-class instruction to assist subs or central office staff on site. Though not perfect, hours of additional work were put into covering this class and making sure these students received an appropriate Science curriculum while their teacher was out. We really appreciate their efforts!"

Erin Cooper, Garfield ES
"Ms. Cooper raised to the occasion, like many other teachers around the county, to fill in for a colleague who needed to be out for the day. Responding with grace and finesse, she pulled both the music and PE classes together for the day into the gym for some impromptu fun. Of course, this is all coming from the mouth of my 8year who talked more enthusiastically about his day at school last night than ever before. In a year when schools are tasked with more assessments and remediation tasks to recover student progress lost during the pandemic, things like play and recess are easily overlooked or pushed aside. But as a parent, I want to reiterate how important this extra time to connect and play with peers has been for my son. A need not easily identified by I-Ready or E-Cart but a need just the same. In the midst of a challenge, Ms. Cooper's flexibility and creativity created a safe and relaxed space for students to have fun and connect with one another. My son has never come home so excited and enthusiastic about his day so thank you!"

Denise Barber, Spring Hill ES
"It's hard to choose one day in which Ms. Barber has helped our family because she has helped us so many times. When my son was in K a few years ago, I had no idea how to do anything, from how to sign in when volunteering, to where to go. She was always particularly kind to my child's grandmother who tagged along. Most recently, my son forgot his allergy medicine. I brought it to school, and she fetched him; however, I didn't bring water and he didn't bring his bottle. Due to COVID protocols, the fountain is unavailable. She heard the problem and immediately went on her own volition to get him a cup of water. Her kindness and caring is an asset to SHES and the students, parents, faculty, and staff. Thank you, Ms. Barber for everything you do."

Katherine Naujoks, Transition Support Resource Center Alexandria
"Kathy is a teacher with boundless, energy, creativity, compassion, and patience. Not only does she have about 15 course preps and often a class of students working on 2 or 3 different courses, she also handles registration, case management and parent communication for a group of students as their 'student advocate'. Recently a student in her case load has had an ongoing personal crisis. Kathy recognized the need for intervention and went above and beyond to coordinate cooperation between the parent, school social worker, counselor and student. She has gone out of her way to help the specialist acquire information and records that could inform their assistance for the student. Kathy is a tireless advocate for students and a terrific teacher who makes each student feel like they are the most important person in the room."

Christina McPherson, Bull Run ES
"Tina is an incredible asset at our school. She consistently takes initiative and offers incredibly helpful support. We are so lucky to have her at our school."

Barb Caley, Robinson SS
"Ms. Caley leads the social studies department as the chair. She previously challenged the department to reflect on our instructional practices, and provided meaningful and important professional development on culturally responsive pedagogy during our recent department meeting. Ms. Caley is leading us in reflecting on our instructional decision-making as we work to promote an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom. This is a particularly challenging topic, however, she worked to develop a discussion protocol to support conversations so everyone could feel safe in participating. Ms. Caley provided supportive materials both before and throughout the meeting, to include reminding us of the wealth of resources in the culturally responsive teaching toolkit. This extensive preparation made it easy for us to participate in relevant conversations within our collaborative teams and as a department. This work will continue to inform our instruction as we work throughout the rest of the year. It was helpful, engaging and meaningful!"
- Eileen Hoppock, Robinson SS

Gihea Schwartz, Fairhill ES
"Mrs. Schwartz has been a wonderful support to our children. Most importantly, she seems to care about all students’ well-being. Mrs. Schwartz goes out of her way to make sure our child is well-adjusted, esp. during a difficult time such as returning to school in the midst of a pandemic. As an added bonus, she is kind, compassionate, and sensitive when working with parents and teachers. We can feel at ease and trust when sharing our concerns with her. We hope that Mrs. Schwartz can be recognized by her well-done and hard work, even though it may be unrecognized at the forefront of school community!"

Hyunyi Min, Westlawn ES
"Despite the frequent challenges in staffing, serving requirements, shortage of materials, and more during the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school year, Ms. Min, and her staff have managed, with consistency and efficiency, served 800 students breakfast and lunch every day, without fail. She and her staff are among the many unsung heroes in FCPS, pivoting on a moment's notice to align their practices and services with the Federal, CDC, FCPS, and local school guidelines. We don't know how they do it all!"

Jose can always be counted on to correct any issues we have and he sees the job through until completion. He always explains what he is doing and he does it all with a smile. Jose makes FCPS a better place by his hard work and dedication!"

Carolyn Vickers and Stacey Robinette, Union Mill ES
"I'd like to recognize the Kindergarten dream team of Ms. Vickers and Mrs. Robinette! These two amazing educators have gone above and beyond to ensure that my child and his classmates have had an amazing experience transitioning into kindergarten. My son comes home daily excited to share about his day. He sings songs he learns in school, points out letters and words he learns and he talks about fun activities they do. This past weekend, he recreated an activity from school by organizing a taste test for our extended family. He came up with the idea to do this activity with the family, prepared all the plates, and explained the activity. It is INCREDIBLE to see your kindergartener get this excited about learning and it is all thanks to the energy that Ms. Vickers and Mrs. Robinette pour into their work each day. Ms. Vickers even came to my son's baseball game to show her support of his outside activities. At a time when things are ever changing, uncertain, and sometimes confusing for our children, Ms. Vickers and Mrs. Robinette have provided a safe, stable, engaging, and fun environment for our children that my son (and his classmates!) can't wait to get to every weekday. Thank you, Ms. Vickers and Mrs. Robinette!"

Jane Waldrop, Hughes MS
"Jane has been extremely supportive of her chorus students for the past year and a half working as a choral teacher at LMHS. Beyond the wonderful virtual recordings every quarter, Jane also organized a field trip for students to attend a musical performance with Reston Community Players in which one of her students was in the cast. She continues to cheer her students on and has been a very positive influence especially during a very difficult pandemic year and numerous hybrid transitions."

Jamie Heath, Mclean HS
"This is overdue, but I'd like to recognize Spanish teacher Jamie Heath. Last year was a tough year for my senior, as things worked out very differently than she and others had envisioned. One random day Ms. Heath called our house and had us put the phone on speaker so she could tell me how my daughter helped another student and how much she enjoyed having her in class. This left me proud, and my daughter absolutely glowing. The kindness Ms. Heath took to spend a little extra time out of her day has not been forgotten. Thank you for being such a caring teacher, Ms. Heath!"

Victoria Kim, Fairhill ES
"Shout out to Ms. Kim for being such a caring teacher. I really appreciate how she is always on top of things and how she communicates with parents on an individual basis. My son is in first grade and this is his first year inside the school building (as last year was virtual). He adjusted so easily and really loves it. I'm grateful he has Ms. Kim as his teacher because she makes it so easy to communicate with her about anything. When his glasses broke in school, she messaged me right away so I was able to bring in his extra pair. He can barely see without his glasses, so it was important for me to get this message right away. Thanks Ms. Kim!"

Devyn Wilcox, Carson MS
"COVID was very hard for students who took orchestra in a virtual learning environment as it presented novel challenges. However, Mrs. Wilcox found creative ways to introduce her students to music history. She even provided them opportunity to perform in an outdoor setting while observing social distancing and she always prepares treats for her students who dropped by at the drive-to for picking up orchestra T-shirt or to get their instruments tuned. I have a 8th grader who has food allergy and she replaced the treats with a small little gift for him since he can't have the treats. That's so very thoughtful of her! Additionally, my child received a handwritten postcard from her during virtual school at 7th grade and another one just came in few days ago. The words on the cards are so encouraging. Thank you so much Mrs. Wilcox for your kindness and thoughtfulness."

Anne Thrasher, Carson MS
"I have 8th grade child who has severe food allergies and normally feels left out when classmates are having treats and he can't have it without my permission. Thankfully, he is gradually learning to read ingredients and makes good choices of what he can or cannot eat. We are so thankful for Ms. Thrasher emailing me before she gives the treats and even takes an effort to buy allergy friendly treats for the class. We also appreciate her suggestions during the 504 Plan meeting. Thank you so much Ms. Thrasher for your kindness and thoughtfulness. You have made a difference!"

Jaqueline Durr, Hughes MS
"Ms. Durr is a once in a lifetime teacher! We are forever grateful that our son is in her class. When we met her at the walk-through during the summer, I was really embarrassed as my son announced English was his least favorite class! (CAN YOU IMAGINE MY HORROR?) Without missing a beat, Ms. Durr said "That's okay, I love a good challenge!" She started asking my son what types of books he enjoys and he said "Historical fiction" and she mentioned she had some in her classroom. Since that time he has taken a keen interest in reading and I have gotten him Alan Gratz books and he keeps mentioning how much he is enjoying English as well as Ms. Durr who is "Cool" and "Fun". I cannot thank Ms. Durr enough for not flinching when my son announced he was not a fan of English, and encouraging him unlike any other teacher he's ever had, to the point of requesting more and more books. Thank you, thank you and thank you again!"

Taylor Williamson, Union Mill ES
"I want to acknowledge Mr. Williamson for his outstanding efforts in supporting students last year during the pandemic. Each morning, he would blast music and dance-by himself- to students watching him. He gave up his lunches for lunch bunches and made connections in a virtual world. There were times during the pandemic when fatigue and isolation set in and I didn't recognize my son, his energy and attitude were low and full of frustration with being separated from friends and his world. He was sad and sometimes disconnected. It was thanks to Mr. Williamson meeting with him virtually before school each week that helped my son come out of the fog, as I call it. I will never forget the generosity, compassion, and dedication Mr. Williamson showed. It made all the difference to my son."

"The Riverside Special Education Team stepped up to support my caseload during my three weeks of sick leave to deal with an unexpected medical diagnosis. Already stretched thin with a special education teacher vacancy and two special education instructional assistants out on sick leave too, the remaining special education teachers and instructional assistants changed their schedules, took on more responsibilities, and sacrificed some of their planning time to ensure that my caseload was supported. Ever observant, she deftly analyzes mindsets and compliments something special in a student’s outfit and knows each child’s preferences. Mrs. Hollenbeck converses with the students about their upcoming breakfast. She knows who loves pancakes, who will choose Cheerios, and who does not like cinnamon. She eagerly chats about the new activities or fascinating books in the plan for the day. Constantly vigilant for unique ways to reach her learners, Mrs. Hollenbeck collects and recycles materials to add dimension, flair, and interest to various lessons. Jacqueline Balough, Sangster ES
"Our family just moved across the country from Oregon to the FCPS district. We were very nervous about registering our children as the forms appeared to be far more robust then what we had experienced before. To make matters slightly more complicated, we had not yet closed on our house in the Sangster ES boundary, and on a whim, contacted the school to see if we could register ahead of closing. Jackie Balough immediately guided us through the forms, the required documents, and referred us to the exact team that helped with our preliminary "student transfer request". In less than a week, Jackie had not only assisted our family in successfully navigating the process but had made us feel right at home on the first day with such a positive attitude. It is hard enough starting the kids after the beginning of the school year, we were lucky to have Jackie's guidance. We literally would not have our children attending Sangster ES right now if it were not for her!"

They engaged the students with interesting and relevant content and questions, and they scheduled it for the perfect time of day on an early release. It’s one thing for a colleague to say it was a great experience, but I think the true compliments come from the responses of students who were in the room with me. Except for one very sleepy student, all of them were attentive and responsive the entire time. One student, who often resists class participation in order to remain engaged with games and YouTube content, actually left the laptop and the phone behind in order to move to a closer seat during the program. Several students asked me for the link to the exit ticket, then completed it eagerly and thoughtfully when I posted it to Schoology later. They wanted to share their thoughts and their ideas for future episodes. Count us in already for the next episode!"

Natasha Saunders, Willow Oaks Admin Center
"Natasha Saunders recently guided ITI through a process of improvement science. She helped us identify a problem of practice, examine the root causes and drivers that impact change, and identify a change idea that is high impact. The process took hours of her time to plan and facilitate, and she did so in a way that was thoughtful and honored each voice in the conversation. She built psychological safety through grounding exercises and moved our discussion forward through intentional structures and powerful coaching. Natasha is a gem in FCPS and we are so lucky to have her leadership in this county."

Tom Kuntz, Belle View ES
"I want to thank Principal Tom Kuntz for the warm welcome we received when we toured his beautiful, newly updated school this summer. He is Belle View Elementary's very own Ted Lasso! His obvious enthusiasm and respect for his teachers and staff convinced us that Belle View Elementary was the right school for our son. In the two months, we've been a member of the BVES Community, I've watched my son behave with more confidence and excitement to learn and excel academically. My son has made good friends and feels like he's part of a great team! Principal Kuntz's positive example helps everyone to remember that they must believe to achieve! Thank you, Coach...I mean Principal Kuntz! We are BVES Believers!"

John Belyea, Sprague Technology Center
"John Belyea is a kind, caring, collaborative, and considerate employee! When I reach out to John (I reach out often) and ask for assistance, he never hesitates. He continually communicates throughout the entire process never wavering when I ask question after question. Because of his attitude and kindness towards me and others, tickets are expedited and closed with customer satisfaction. When we hit a huge snag in the supervisor structure not updating in outlook (this was impacting FCPS Cares), John worked with me and continued to test after he found the solution. When a coach was struggling with entering Covid information, John came to the rescue and assisted the employee. That employee reached out to me thanking me for John and his expertise. These are just a couple of examples of the multiple times John has assisted me. John is a dedicated, honest, hard-working, patient, and supportive employee. John goes above and beyond in every situation and if he doesn’t have the answer, he finds it! John’s willingness to help and support is invaluable. Words cannot express how grateful I am for him and his can-do attitude. John is amazing to work with and a great resource for FCPS!"

Colleen Wheaton, Bryant ALC
"Colleen wears many hats at our school and this year, she has added "Testing Coordinator". Given this new responsibility, she had to learn about the new tests that students are given. Colleen learned about the MAP test, then administered it to our students, and then taught all of us about it! Her presentation was hands-on and very informative. She showed us a variety of ways to look at the student profiles and to use them to help our students with their skills. The role of the Testing Coordinator is complex and involves working with a lot of different people. Colleen has taken it on with an open mind and has worked very hard to help all of us navigate through the learning process as well. It is so wonderful to have a teammate who is patient, understanding, and helpful! Thank you Colleen for your hard work and your awesome teaching!"

Cindy Waddell, Bryant ALC
"Dr. Waddell is our Health and Physical Education teacher at Bryant ALC. She taught a unit on golf at school in which she emphasized the different strokes and the rules and etiquette of the game. The culminating event was a trip to East Potomac Park where our students had the opportunity to practice putting, driving, and playing some practice holes. They also had to teach us (their teachers) how to do these skills. Dr. Waddell put a great deal of effort and energy into planning this trip for all of us! It was a special day where students were having positive interactions as well as feeling pride in their accomplishments! Because of Dr. Waddell's dedication and attention to detail, this trip was perfect! I do not think I have seen so many smiles and heard so many words of thanks on any field trip ever! Thank you Dr. Waddell for your care and your love for our students! We are all so fortunate to have you here at Bryant!!!!!"

Mike Waters, Stonecroft Transportation
"Mr. Mike is one of those special people who just makes a childhood memorable. He started driving my daughters’ bus when my kids were in Kindergarten and 2nd grade. Luckily for my younger daughter, kindergartners were required to sit in the front seats, directly behind the driver. My daughter spent every day talking to Mr. Mike, who conversed with her, made her feel like a big kid, and just did everything to make her feel like she was important. Unfortunately, after a few years, he was assigned to a different route. But he never forgot my girls. When he saw them at school he would always wave and ask them how they were doing. He knew their names and always went above and beyond to make the girls feel special. He also was a wonderful driver to his patrols and the rest of the kids on his route, acknowledging their hard work with gift cards at the end of the year. None of this was required, but it was obvious it came from the heart. Mr. Mike probably only serves as a substitute driver these days, but today my former Kindergartner (now a 6th grader) had him on her route. He kindly asked her how she, her sister, and her mom were doing. He still remembered. Mr. Mike is truly special and I hope he gets this nomination so that he knows the impact he made on this family."

Meghan Merrill, Lorton Station ES
"Meghan's official title is Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, but she is so much more at Lorton Station. Meghan is an instructional coach- she supports teachers with lesson planning and gently empowers them to use AAP resources with all of the students, thus increasing student achievement. She is a school testing coordinator- this year, Meghan has jumped in to support me as STC. She has learned so quickly and has made the responsibility of STC so much lighter. She is constantly asking, how can I help? She is an advocate- somehow, among all her above-mentioned responsibilities, Meghan finds time to spend time in classrooms, identifying student potential and encouraging students to produce their best work. When it comes time to screen students for AAP level IV services, Meghan is able to support teachers in completing the referral packets because she knows the students just as well as the teacher. Meghan is a teacher- as we struggle with two vacant classrooms this year, Meghan has jumped in to plan and teach language arts lessons and build relationships with a group of students who don't have a consistent adult presence in their classroom. Meghan has become that adult for them. Meghan is a mentor- she took the mentor class this summer and has taken on mentoring a brand new teacher. She has spent countless hours supporting her mentee through her first year of teaching. She has been a source of support and comfort for her mentee but also wisdom and guidance. Finally, Meghan is a cheerleader- she is ALWAYS kind and positive. She is the leader of our 'Spirit Team' and manages to prioritize fun by planning events, spirit weeks, and other opportunities to build community. Thank you for all the sunshine you bring to Lorton Station Meghan! You are everything!"

Kelly Ryan, Lorton Station ES
"Kelly is our lead special education teacher and local screening chair. On top of her many responsibilities, she has found time this year to mentor two need special education teachers. She supports them with IEP goals, timelines, and instruction. Additionally, she has a student caseload of her own, which has proved to be very challenging given the diverse needs of her students. Under her guidance, her students have made tremendous progress in such a short amount of time. Many of her students have not been in a school setting since they were 1st graders, and yet they have settled into 3rd grade seamlessly. Additionally, Kelly is co-teaching with a brand new classroom teacher. She has spent countless hours planning and coaching the teacher to support them in improving their craft. Kelly is a true leader, on the special education team, her grade level team, and at Lorton Station overall. Our school community would not be the same without her leadership and grit. Thank you is not enough for everything you do for Lorton Station, Kelly! You are so appreciated!"

Karen Fructuoso, Lorton Station ES
"Karen is one of our school counselors. She is such a special person with a big heart for kids. Her calm, nurturing nature creates a safe space for kids to open up. She immediately gains the trust and respect of students and adults alike. Even when things are crazy, and there are a million things going on, Karen always makes time for one more student, parent, or teacher. Today, I walked by her office and she had one kindergartener sleeping off a tantrum, one older student who needed a break from the classroom, and another student who was feeling overwhelmed and needed a safe place to decompress. Still, she asked me if there was anything she could do to help me. She is selfless, kind, and just a wonderful human. Thank you Karen for all the sunshine you bring to Lorton Station!"

She gives 100% of herself to the students and staff at Lorton Station, from supporting students with 504 plans, to running our safety patrol program, Laura is truly a leader. Somehow she still finds time to take on a counseling intern, support students in crisis, design token boards for kindergarteners, talk with parents about how to support their children with their anxiety, and support administration to design interventions for students with challenging behaviors. Laura is selfless and our school would not be the same without her giving spirit and a big heart!"

Elizabeth D'Cruz, Woodburn ES
"I wanted to take a moment to recognize an incredible teacher, Ms. D'Cruz! We are very grateful that our son has such a wonderful, caring teacher. He was virtual all last school year, so we had some concerns about how his transition back to in-person learning within a more structured environment would go. Thanks to Ms. D'Cruz, all those concerns quickly faded. She is always so thoughtful, kind, and caring. She proactively communicates with families to share what's happening at school, to send reminders, and is always quick to respond to questions. We had our first quarter conference this week and it was clear to us that our son was seen, known, and affirmed in her class, not just as a student but as a whole person. She knew his academic strengths and areas for growth, and also his favorite books, and his biggest interests (cats and drumming). Last week our son invited Ms. D'Cruz to his rock concert to hear him play drums on a Saturday. Knowing how precious weekend family time is, I didn't expect her to be able to come...but she did! He was so thrilled to see her and to get to show off his love of drumming with the teacher he's already come to love so much. We won't forget her kindness! Ms. D'Cruz is one of the many teachers at Woodburn Elementary who cultivates a caring culture and welcomes and affirms her students and families."

"Ms. Bergh has continuously gone above and beyond what our expectations of a teacher are. She was our son's kindergarten teacher and now works with him as the school reading specialist. We recently had a meeting with the Local Screening Committee to ensure our son is getting the assistance he needs in his learning endeavors. I don't know if this meeting would have even taken place without Ms. Bergh's help and guidance, nor if it would have had a successful result without her devotion to the student, and her level of detail and knowledge on the areas where our son struggles. I wish Woodlawn Elementary had more Ms. Berghs to reach and work with every student that struggles. Darwin Barker, Sandburg MS
"He's such a positive energy source. He posts weekly videos letting us know what's going on. He isn't required to do this. I admit I love watching these, knowing this is the kind of energy at Sandburg, optimistic, positive, and with high expectations for staff and students. He sometimes has to share tough info, but he does it so well. And he concludes with, "Have a great day (week), or not, the CHOICE is YOURS." Staying connected and positive is so important, especially now, and he does a fantastic job at this."

Cherith Pierson, Churchill Road ES
"Overall, we have been so impressed by CRES and the CRES community and how they've created such a nurturing and safe environment for our kids while also letting the kids have a lot of fun. Particularly, I'm floored by our principal. I had trouble getting into a back-to-school zoom the first week and posted to a local Facebook group to see if anyone else had the same issue. Within minutes the issue resolved itself. Later that night, I received a call from the principal - a friend had seen my post and flagged it with her and she personally called me (during what must have been an insanely busy week for her) to make sure I was able to log onto the back-to-school situation. I was floored. She is so dedicated and thoughtful."

Sharyn Pringle, Wakefield Forest ES
"Mrs. Prindle has been so welcoming for us newcomers to the school. She is an excellent communicator. She follows guidelines and recommended protocols and keeps the school community updated with any news. She's really looking out for our kids and trying to keep them and the whole community safe and happy. It's a hard line to walk but she does it, seemingly, with ease. We appreciate all of her efforts to return to "normal" as much as possible while still enforcing and encouraging masks and vaccines when appropriate."

Lauren Forshay, Davis Center
"I'd like to give a special shout-out to Lauren for taking the lead on getting our DCC School Store up and running. A school store to provide the opportunity for staff and students to purchase spirit wear has been an idea in my head for a really long time and I have not had the time to fully devote myself to exploring options available to us. Lauren found out about this and took over and found us a vendor who was very easy to work with, reasonably priced, and delivered a variety of good products. Our first orders arrived this week and I could not be more pleased!!! Thanks to Lauren's efforts, our DCC school community now has another way to show their pride and share what we do and how we contribute to the Northern Virginia business community. Thank you, Lauren, for being a constant cheerleader and giving us another success to celebrate this school year!"

David Greene, Fairfax HS
"David, English Teacher at Fairfax High School, has been instrumental in building the eSports teams within FCPS. Almost single-handedly has he built a thriving team at Fairfax HS but also is a resource to the entire division. When schools start to look into eSports, David is the resource that helps them get their programs up and running. Virginia High School Sports League lists him as a Super Coach and while that title is both a perfect descriptor for David, what this actually means in practice is that he represents Fairfax High School and FCPS across the Commonwealth as someone who can help schools and divisions launch their own successful eSports programs. In addition to his regular duties as an English Teacher, David consistently works outside of contract hours to support his students and athletes no matter the time of day. He really has gone above and beyond to support our division and grow new and innovative programs."

Tammy Bronstein, FCPS Virtual Program ES
"Last year taught all of us just how difficult online learning can be for young children, especially those with special needs. Ms. Bronstein is an outstanding example of how these online challenges can be surpassed. Our children are amazed and inspired by her individual customized lesson plans which incorporate their favorite characters in interactive, creative, and engaging ways. She has complete mastery of multiple virtual platforms which allow students of all abilities to participate in a way that is most comfortable and motivating to them. The kids loved how she would change her settings to go shopping at their favorite stores for math time, and they are amazed by her magic zoom wall which can make stars disappear into black holes or fish be caught at the lake. Ms. Bronstein, along with her assistant Ms. Snell, has created a wonderfully welcoming classroom that is giving our kids the perfect foundations for academic and social success. Kudos!!"

Colby Bruno, Gatehouse Admin Center
"As an elementary administrator, we are often in need of support regarding discipline or misconduct practices as the age of students we work with require a different lens. I reached out to Colby on one such case. Her patience and guidance were so helpful in keeping my perspective calm and allowed me to work through the facts. She provided great examples and resources and offered ways to connect further down the road. I'm so very thankful there are folks like Colby supporting us in these difficult situations. Thank you for having our backs and guiding us through these challenging times!"

"Katie is an outstanding counselor for Hayfield Middle School. In addition to being an advocate for her own students, Katie is often observed assisting any student who is in need of help or assistance! Additionally, Katie is the MS Testing Coordinator. Despite numerous technical issues, Katie displayed her trademark coolness under pressure, constantly handling testing issues, and teacher anxieties, to execute the mass testing of nearly one thousand MS students in both English and Math!"

Bradley Tarantino, Cedar Lane School
"Brad's efforts have been a major contribution in getting the school year here at the lane off to such a fine start. Brad’s daily announcements during class changes, especially during periods 5 and 6 regarding A and B lunch, have been an important factor in contributing to the smoothness of transitions and reducing student confusion. Brad has also been highly supportive in assisting with providing classroom needs. I needed more wipes and no sooner had I sent the email, there he was with the wipes! The students were impressed. Thanks, Mr. Tarantino!!"

Gigi is organized, kind, patient, and a great planner. FCPS is lucky to have her as a face of our school and larger organization!"

Bryan Buser, Gatehouse Admin Center
"Bryan truly exemplifies what it means in FCPS to have a Caring Culture. Bryan often reaches out unsolicited to let our school know about great ways to update our website or how to reach more community members. With our name change last year, he helped us review all of our affiliated pages to ensure all our name changes have been updated. More recently, our SBTS is out on maternity leave with her first child. Bryan stepped in to help us with a website correction AND offered to keep an eye on things in her absence. He is a wonderful asset to FCPS!"
