Yamalie Rodriguez Figueroa, West Potomac HS
"Mrs. Yamalie exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding educator and community leader, making her more than deserving of an FCPS Cares award. She consistently goes above and beyond for her students, colleagues, and the broader community. Her leadership in initiatives like Girl Up, Lend Hope, Hispanic Leadership, Spanish Honor Society, and the K-6 Enrichment class demonstrates her tireless commitment to fostering growth, empowerment, and opportunity for all.
Recently, I approached Mrs. Yamalie with a request to support a project creating holiday cards for Choice, Respect, and Independence (CRI), an organization dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities. Without hesitation, she mobilized her four clubs to produce over 300 thoughtful, heartfelt cards, embodying the spirit of generosity and care that defines her character.
In addition to her full-time teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Yamalie dedicates her Tuesday and Thursday evenings to providing enrichment classes for the children of parents enrolled in English/Literacy courses, ensuring that education is accessible and enriching for families across generations. Her ability to balance her teaching duties with such extensive extracurricular involvement and community service is nothing short of extraordinary.
Mrs. Yamalie is a true superstar whose passion, energy, and commitment make a profound and lasting impact on everyone she encounters. She is an invaluable FCPS community asset and deserves this recognition."

"Sydney Sadler is a phenomenal English teacher who cares about her students and fellow colleagues. When I came to sub for one of her colleagues, she made me feel safe, supported, warm, and welcomed to her class, the English department, and the school. Her care and warmth for her students is evident through her teaching and interactions. Thank you Sydney for helping me and making me feel a part of West Potomac. Kristen Zemba, Chantilly HS
"Prior to this school year, most high school libraries in FCPS used Library Trac to monitor students entering the library. Unfortunately, it is no longer and approved vendor. This situation left many of use throughout the county scrambling for a solution. Kristen created a multi-layered sign-in system in Google Sheets. As the year progressed, and schools were still looking for a solution she happily shared her solution with other schools. We started using it in October and it has been a game changer. Thanks so much to Kristen for sharing her talents with all high school librarians!"

Mercedes Matson & Marina Dewees, Lewis HS
"Ms. Mercedes Matson, Biology teacher, and Dr. Marina Dewees, ESOL teacher, went above and beyond to support a group of seniors who are working towards earning a verified credit in science before graduation. They created SOL preparation materials and worked with students over three days during school to provide individualized remediation. Ms. Matson and Dr. Dewees volunteered to work with our senior students without hesitation and added this task to their already very busy teaching workload. The rest of our science team stepped up to cover their classes and ensure instruction continued in their regular classes. Both teachers welcomed students to remediation each day with a smile and created a warm and welcoming environment for all. They were instrumental in preparing and motivating students. As a result of their efforts, several students earned the verified credit needed for on time graduation."

Jamie Leitch, Floris ES
"We would like to recognize Jamie Leitch, our Special Education Department Chair, for being such a positive and impactful addition to Floris Elementary School. Jamie has demonstrated exceptional leadership within our Guiding Coalition Team and MTSS Team, and she continuously goes above and beyond to support and mentor staff.
She is always ready to step in and take on any role when needed, ensuring that the best interests of our students are at the forefront of everything she does. Jamie actively models effective instruction, takes the time to support staff with writing IEP goals, and builds meaningful, positive relationships with both staff and, most importantly, our students.
We are proud of Jamie and the incredible impact she has had at Floris in the short time she has been with us. Her dedication and commitment to our school community make a difference every day, and we are so fortunate to have her on our team.

"I really appreciate Russell Finelsen. He is my daughter's freshman honors history teacher. He sends a monthly email to all parents with a detailed description of what he is teaching. He also includes assignment due dates and test dates. He is very dedicated to keeping everyone informed and I see this as going above and beyond the standard. Through his monthly email he takes the time and makes the effort to connect with parents. Thank you for being a diligent and enthusiastic teacher. Your efforts are appreciated!"

Desire Bayne, Gatehouse Admin Center
"I just wanted to take a moment to give a huge shoutout to Desire Bayne, Security Systems Network Specialist @ GAC. I am the point of contact for Food & Nutrition Services for the launch of the new door entry security program using the FCPS employee ID badges with a 6-digit security code. Desire met with me at Food & Nutrition Services (FNS) and thoroughly explained the new program and that FNS would be one of the initial offices to participate in this programming launch. Desire and I collaborated exceptionally well on how best to assist each other in this process. She made it easy and efficient, and she is very pleasant to work with. She conveys often that whatever I need she was there to assist with. Knowing that Desire is looking out for our office's safety and security is very reassuring. As needs arise, she is always quick to acknowledge and reply with a swift and efficient resolution. Desire's dedication to providing top-notch customer service is exceptional. Rhina Rauda Merino, Sideburn Support Center
"I just wanted to take a moment to give a huge shoutout to Rhina Rauda Merino, Assistant Plant Operations Monitor @ Sideburn Support Center. Rhina oversees our custodial services for the Office of Food and Nutrition Services. Currently, this position is an hourly position so we have a continuous turnover in custodial staffing. With each turnover though, Rhina always stops by to inform us of the upcoming changes. In addition, she consistently and regularly checks to see what our needs are as well as any issues we are encountering. Knowing that she is looking out for our office is very reassuring. As needs arise, Rhina is always quick to acknowledge and reply with a swift and efficient resolution. It’s clear that Rhina's dedication to providing top-notch customer service is exceptional. From the moment I called, she answered quickly and immediately made me feel understood. The empathy she showed towards the difficulties I had encountered was genuinely refreshing, especially in such a large school district like FCPS. Her warm and friendly demeanor truly stood out! Not only did Shirley relay that I wasn't the only FCPS employee to encounter such issues, but she also took swift action by efficiently entering my request while we were on the call. It’s clear that Shirley's dedication to providing top-notch customer service is exceptional. Her extensive knowledge of office procedures makes it so easy to navigate any requests I might have, and she is always quick and efficient in addressing them. What truly stands out is her dedication to going above and beyond. She not only ensures that my requests are taken care of from start to finish but also checks in to see if there's anything else she can assist me with. Sarah Freeland & Shanette Yao, West Potomac HS and Mt. Vernon HS
"I am writing to enthusiastically recommend Mrs. Yao from West Potomac High School and Mrs. Freeland from Mount Vernon High School for the FCPS Cares Award. Their exceptional dedication to fostering community collaboration and service has had a profound impact on our students, staff, and the greater community. This past holiday season, Mrs. Yao and Mrs. Freeland worked closely with Bryant High School to engage their students in providing exceptional community service to our troops. Through their unwavering support and leadership, we were able to collect donations for the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program at Fort Belvoir. Their teamwork and coordination helped us assemble and donate over 200 holiday bags for soldiers, spreading joy and appreciation to those who serve our country. This initiative was not just about providing holiday cheer; it was also a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when schools come together with a shared purpose. Mrs. Yao and Mrs. Freeland’s commitment to supporting our students' Purple Star Project highlighted the strength of community collaboration and served as a valuable lesson in teamwork and empathy for all involved. What makes Mrs. Yao and Mrs. Freeland particularly deserving of this award is their ability to inspire others through their kindness, leadership, and passion for service. They exemplify the values celebrated by the FCPS Cares Award by going above and beyond to support students, strengthen community ties, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Their contributions have left a lasting impact not only on the soldiers who received the holiday bags but also on the students who witnessed the power of collaboration and giving back. Mrs. Yao and Mrs. Freeland are outstanding educators and leaders who inspire all those around them to strive for excellence and compassion. Stacy Shick, Hunt Valley ES
"Stacy Shick routinely above and beyond teacher expectations for her students. As a sixth grade teacher, this is an extremely important year as it is their last year of elementary school and they will be forever in a new environment where they have even more responsibilities. Ms. Shick has a magic about her where she's able to communicate this to students and empower them to be in charge of their own success. She also has a wonderful sense of humor that allows her to connect with her class of preteens, many who yearn to be adults (or at least a teenager) while still very much a child. She never makes them feel silly for mistakes, and takes a real interest in their life outside of school. They know that she sees them as more as just a student in a chair. My child has daily reports of how Ms. Shick teaches them in a way that is easy to understand and fun to learn. We are incredibly lucky to have her as our child's teacher this year, and she absolutely deserves to be recognized for her daily outstanding efforts. She is a teacher that these students will look back on for the rest of their lives as one who made a difference.

Mason Walsh, Dranesville ES
"Mrs. Walsh goes above and beyond for her students and their families. She takes the time to provide daily updates on what occurred in the classroom and generally includes several pictures. I can tell that my child is made to feel safe, welcome, and special in her class. Based on talking to my child: She checks to make sure students don't bring anything they shouldn't to school or snacks that contain peanuts. She gives everyone an option on how to greet in the morning (wave, hug, high five, etc.) and she speaks Spanish to (I assume) non-native English learners. She makes him feel good about himself by responding enthusatically when he makes accomplishes certain objectives. I am very grateful to have Mrs. Walsh as my son's kindergarten teacher."

"I would like to submit an FCPS CARES recognition for Susan Yi. In her first year at Floris, Susan has truly made a remarkable impact. She has demonstrated strong classroom engagement with her students, fostering a positive and inclusive classroom culture where students feel supported and valued. Susan is consistently positive, collaborative, and reflective with her colleagues, always striving to contribute to a strong, supportive team. One of her standout contributions this year has been her exceptional support for a new student in her classroom. "We greatly appreciate our child's bus driver, Ms. Pham. She is kind and patient with the high school students on her bus. Recently, our son lost an item on the bus. Ms. Pham took the time to help him look for the item. Thanks to her efforts, he was able to get it back. We are thankful for her and the safe transportation she provides day after day to get kids to and from school!"

"Emily took on the task of helping organize a group of Chantilly teachers to go to VSTE. She took care of everything, and I mean everything. She sat down and helped us complete the FCPS travel site, booked all the hotel rooms, and registered us for the conference. Emily also created a shared site for note-taking. I could not have gone to VSTE and learned so much without Emily's help."

Mary Mitchell Obarowski, Bull Run ES
"I wanted to call out the front office staff, but particularly Ms. Mary Mitchell Obarowski, for their care of my son when he was ill recently. He got sick before getting on the school bus and was taken back to the front office to rest until we could pick him up. The front office team stayed extra time after school while I navigated through traffic to arrive and made sure his sister was reunited with him so he was not alone. They cared for him and made sure we were equipped with bags in case he got sick on the way home. After we said our goodbyes, he got sick outside the school again before we made it to the car. Ms. Mary was walking out to end her day, but spotted us sitting there and she came over to check on us. She went back inside to get us extra bags for the car, as well as a cover we could use to keep his seat from getting messy. She knew it was cold outside and offered to help us back inside so we could be warm while we waited. All of it was incredibly kind and gracious, and we were so thankful for her care and warmth that afternoon. A huge thank you to everyone for making sure our family felt cared for in that moment. And a special thank you to Ms. Mary for showing such compassion and giving her time so readily, even after her day should have been completed."

"Mr. Mark is my daughter’s AM bus driver. She is a five year old with special needs - not only does he take great care of her with her wheelchair and the lift—- he also continues to talk and interact with her even as she is considered “non-verbal.” He has called me in the past to check if she’s absent before he leaves - and he writes me back the nicest emails on days where she is sick and I let him know she won’t be at the bus stop. We are so grateful for Mr. Mark’s care and compassion - and daily commitment to ensure she and all the other children get to school safely each day. Thank you, Mr. Mark! FCPS is lucky to have you - as are we!"

"I was locked out of my office at Wilton Woods without a key on October 29. I thought I would have to wait a few days or weeks to get someone to fix the lock on the door. Instead, my colleagues at Wilton Woods came to my aid. Several people tried their “master” key, but none worked. Others suggested ways that we might try to get the door open. Finally, a group that included Michael Hrabak, Scott Dreier, Brian Stagliano, and John Kim felt that they were up for the challenge. Using a ladder and a loop fashioned from cable wire, they managed to snake the wire through the ceiling tiles, hook the door handle, and open my office door. I really appreciated everyone’s efforts that day to get me back into my office. It was great teamwork. And I now have a new lock and key on my door. Although I know I can count on my Wilton Woods colleagues if I ever need more assistance."

"Resilient. Dedicated. Talented. Connected. Glimmer-Giver! Those are just a handful of words to describe our local superhero, Erica Moore. Erica Moore, our K/1st grade Multiple Disabilities teacher, is someone who comes to school every day with the mindset that every child she works with will have a brighter day. It is because of her that many students who struggle find those glimmers in their day. Glimmers of hope. Glimmers of “Yes I can!” Glimmers of confidence. She constantly goes above and beyond for her students and fellow teachers. This is most evident in how she manages data collection, co-plans with her gen-ed teachers, shows up like Wonder Woman at the drop of a hat, meets every kids IEP goal and services over 11, yes ELEVEN, students with specific learning needs. And get this, all with a smile on her face. I don’t know how she does it, but I am positive she is wearing some type of invisible cape. Or perhaps she is just THAT inspiring and amazing. Anna Gionfriddo & Thaksina Khaikaew, Freedom Hill ES
"I would like to recognize the contributions of two employees at Freedom Hill Elementary School, Ms. Anna Gionfriddo & Ms. Thaksina Khaikaew, for hosting a STEP (Secondary Transition to Employment Program) Student in their classroom as part of their Community Work Experience. STEP is a collaborative effort among FCPS staff and businesses in Fairfax County to provide students aged 18 to 22 with employment training in real work settings. Ms. Gionfriddo and Ms. Khaikaew have been such staunch supporters of our program and really see the benefit of an inclusive workforce. They are champions and advocates for students with intellectual and developmental disAbilities. Their contributions to our program have literally been life-changing for several of our students as they have helped to prepare these young adults to enter the workforce upon graduation. Ms. Gionfriddo and Ms. Khaikaew thank you so much for opening your doors to our young adults with disAbilities to help provide them with employment training. Our mission is not possible without the unwavering support of our community and you both have been so devoted and dedicated to helping support STEP and change the lives of our young adults with disAbilities."

Specials teachers, who teach **the entire school**, aren’t seen or recognized enough, and he is one of these obscured extraordinary people who deserves to be celebrated. We’ve been at Eagle View for almost 6 years, and I cannot tell you how many times I have heard a student say, “OMG I loooooove Mr. Walby!” or a parent say, “He’s my child’s favorite teacher”. A gifted musician AND a gifted teacher, he brings the most positive classroom environment and a genuine passion for musical learning to his students. "Ms. Goodfriend was my now 5th grader’s teacher last school year. Following an IEP meeting, I was reflecting on my son’s growth during 4th grade, and it brought me to her obvious influence. Ms. Goodfriend’s classroom is structured and organized but flexible, industrious but fun, and supportive while maintaining consistent expectations. What better design can you have for a learning environment? In this environment, my son better understood that while his neurodivergence is recognized and accepted, he still had the responsibility to help create a positive classroom culture because he is a person of influence. She was able to navigate my son’s ups and downs and guide him gently down the steeper slopes. She adapted to many of his more difficult behaviors, for example, allowing him to take breaks when he was emotionally overwhelmed, and adjusted established procedures that were difficult for him to navigate. With a sense of empowerment, eventually, he was able to shed his BIP and allowed to be more independent and self-directed. It was a HUGE growth year for him. Though diligent, she happily indulges her students’ requisite silly sides. As examples, alongside them, I’ve seen her race on an obstacle course, do the Macarena down the hallway at Friday dismissal, and play basketball at recess, and laugh at their nonsensical jokes. She takes on crazy 4th grade energies every day and funnels it just right. On a personal level she is funny, warm, keenly intelligent, and direct but compassionate. I trusted (and still do) her insight and guidance. I enjoyed our conversations. I am so grateful that she chose education and Eagle View, and my son was able to encounter such a role model."
