FCPS CARES of the Month Recipients

Central Office

Delia Arnez, Gatehouse Admin Center

I am writing to recognize a custodial employee, Delia Arnez. All custodial staff are unsung angels, quietly completing their work and not imagining that by simply completing their duties they are positively impacting others. Such is the case of Delia.

As an FCPS employee, I utilize the Fitness Center at Gatehouse Road and was there working out when I took off my wedding band while completing an exercise and left it on top of the machine I was using. I realized my mistake the next morning, and while afraid that I might never recover it, I told myself that FCPS is an organization filled with people who act from a place of honesty and integrity and that, of course, I would find it.

Indeed, I went to the main desk at Gatehouse Center and learned that Delia had turned it in! My ring represents 28 years of marriage and is, accordingly, priceless to me. Finding it at the main desk, reminded me that most people can be counted on to do the right thing! I actually encountered Delia a short time later while I was working out, and thanked her profusely. She humbly stated that no thanks were necessary, and that she was simply doing her job. While this is true, I think that her impact was affirming to me, reminding me that FCPS is filled with people who CARE!

Fanny Salazar-Laske, Herndon MS (Pictured) - View the Recognition!

"I was new to Herndon Middle as a parent and couldn't have been more welcomed by Fanny in the front office. She is a school-community liaison. Her focus is primarily on the 60% ESOL communities and our 60% free and reduced lunch communities. Her hours are long, but her caring goes beyond her 40 hours per week. She is a true representative of what FCPS "CARES" means. Her liaison with the neighboring communities I have witnessed firsthand, calling lists and lists of students' families, where the teacher is having a hard time communicating with them about a grade/event/classroom issue, helping a Spanish-speaking mother sign their child up for a field trip on time through the FCPS software platforms, or helping a mom and new student register at the school as they just arrived in the US mid-year, speaking little English with no place yet to sleep and needing help with navigating all things school, but more importantly the world and culture they have stepped into. You may think, well these are her "duties"....but she does not approach these interactions this way. She deeply cares for students and their families and the Herndon community, especially during difficult and sometimes painful times. For example, when a child comes to her and asks for food as their stomach is growling so loudly they can not even concentrate on the school day ahead, she welcomes them to the school pantry she has led, organized, and stocked. She treats everyone with respect and dignity. Her love is abundant in showing off the pantry she has purposefully stocked item by item.  She truly cares about humanity, and this is what this award is for. She is a true representative and I, the administration, the community, the PTA, and most importantly the students can not thank her enough. Her hugs are the best, and her warmth spreads throughout our school."

Kirsten Salonga, Justice HS - View the Recognition!

"Ms. Salonga shows time and time again how devoted she is to her students and fellow teachers. She ensures her students have an environment that fosters creativity through exciting experiments. Over the past month she guided her students through a project using hydroponic machines that she was able to acquire using a grant. They learned to grow their own lettuce and saw the fruits of their labor. You could see her classes respond very well to this new opportunity. She even went out of her way to establish a fundraiser for her kids to go on a field trip to Great Falls. Students made stickers that reflected their study of the environment and sold them to raise money. Her unique ability to connect with students inspires those around her. As Science Department Chair, she goes out of her way to bring her co-teachers together. We are lucky enough to have access to many of the curriculum materials that she created. They are full of life and present the information in ways the kids understand. Justice High School is lucky to have her on the staff."

Elba Washington and Patricia Jackson, West Potomac HS

"I would like to nominate both Mrs. Elba Washington, the cafeteria manager, and Mrs. Pat Jackson, a member of the Custodial Team, for the FCPS Cares award. West Potomac is a recipient of the Super Snack program, and despite the direct involvement of three staff members in distributing snacks, two individuals behind the scenes play crucial roles in supporting the program. Mrs. Pat Jackson, a member of the custodial staff, ensures the smooth operation of snack distribution by taking snacks out of the freezer and placing them by the door, thereby facilitating timely delivery. Additionally, Mrs. Elba Williams, the cafeteria manager, significantly contributes to the program's success through her support. She provides extra boxes for the team on days when athletic teams forget to bring them and assists with paperwork as needed. These individuals are the true unsung heroes, and their dedication to the Super Snack program at West Potomac deserves recognition through the FCPS Cares award."

Region 4

Ashley Khan, Rolling Valley ES

"Ashley willingly inherited a tricky classroom situation in January. She transitioned from a classroom monitor to an IA to an upper-grade Enhanced Autism classroom teacher within about 2 weeks. I have never seen a person more dedicated to learning on the job like Ashley. She threw herself into the work, has built sensational relationships with her students and coworkers, and has been a joy to mentor. Ashley has implemented a daily transparent communication form with ALL families to keep them informed about the day and receive information about the student's evening/morning. Parents describe Ashley as passionate, kind, energetic, helpful, and supportive. Ashley accepts all questions as an invitation to improve on her practices and regularly identifies new resources, reinforcers, work materials, and toys to enhance her students' school experiences. While Ashley has 3 children of her own, one may think she has 11; the genuine care she has for her students is unmatched. Ashley seeks out additional trainings and information to better serve her population and, as a teacher trainee, has involved herself in every special education meeting and training that has been offered. Ashley communicates effectively with parents, staff, and administration. This past week was especially tricky for our students, and without missing a beat, the first thing she said this afternoon was, "ok, what do we need to change so tomorrow is a more successful and calmer day." Ashley needs to change nothing, her classroom runs smoothly, her students are making progress, the parents feel communicated with, and her staff raves about her. Ashley treats all of her instructional assistants and 1:1 aides as equal partners in education. Students participate in all aspects of the school day and have been provided opportunities for genuine inclusion. Ashley's dedication to learning and growing has been a joy to watch. It is my honor to nominate her. She deserves to be recognized for all of the work she does during the day, into the evening, and behind the scenes."

Stephanie Thomas, Canterbury Woods ES

"My dad always said, "Being nice doesn’t cost a thing.” This is how Dr. Stephanie Thomas responds to my observations that she is consistently helpful and kind to the many students, staff, and teachers who stop by her office every day for assistance with auditory amplification. Stephanie is the on-site audiologist at Canterbury Woods Elementary School, where there is a program for elementary-aged students with hearing loss. Amplification technology has changed significantly during the more than 25 years that Stephanie has worked for FCPS, and she has consistently shown remarkable enthusiasm for finding new and improved ways to ensure students can access sound and verbally conveyed instruction. Students utilizing cochlear implants, bone-anchored hearing aids, and behind-the-ear hearing aids, who present with a variety of types and degrees of hearing loss, all require individual attention to connect to the listening technology provided by FCPS. Every day, issues arise with connection difficulties, devices that aren’t working as expected, or parts that are lost. It is often necessary to contact hearing aid manufacturers and ENT offices for clarification and further information about amplification function or audiological assessments. The remarkable thing about Stephanie is how her office door is always open, and how she shows interest and concern when addressing every issue that arises. Whether instructing students on listening skills or troubleshooting amplification issues, Stephanie is a quietly competent hero, who exemplifies the extensive knowledge, and especially the kindness and earnest caring, that make FCPS a special place that works for all students."

She plays a pivotal role as the go-to person in crisis situations, responding promptly and effectively to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved. Ms. Pavoni is one of our 5th grade teachers at Bailey's Upper ES. She has been a part of the Bailey's community for years. She builds strong relationships with her students, families, and staff. She is a valued member of her 5th grade team and is always willing to try new approaches to support her students. Maureen Bush, Blair Robertson, Maria Vasquez, Tanya Belda, Carlos Rosas P, Xiomara Rosas Pereira, Anne Scarano, Brian Bosch, Christian Lanzaro, Esther Park, and Mary Roblyer, Dunn Loring Center, Forte Center, and Willow Oaks Admin Center

"The SY23-24 vision, planning, and execution of WIDA assessment materials collection and packaging was one of the most efficient collections completed. Maria, Xiomara, Carlos, and Brian were always ready to open the door and help STCs and ACs carry in WIDA materials to check in for the end of the testing window. The appointment scheduling and materials processing made for an efficient process for STCs. Tanya Belda's ESOL Service's Team and Hourly Employee Friends of OAR, who support information accuracy on materials being submitted, made quick work of the 20,000 paper test booklets that are submitted for the Division. A process that would take approximately 10 days to complete has been refined to a 5-7 day process. Congratulations to all involved and for going above and beyond for the STCs and ACs to accommodate their busy and unpredictable schedules and for reducing the time for the process by almost 50%!! Thank you for your hard work and dedication to supporting the Annual English Language Proficiency Assesment."

Elaine Israel, Robinson SS

"Elaine Israel, Learning Disabilities Teacher. Winston Churchill once said, "The (military) reservist is twice the citizen." Similarly, the Learning Disabilities specialist is twice the teacher. Mastering both a variety of subject material AND unique issues related to special-needs in these developing minds is to perform teaching duties twice. I’ve witnessed this and I’ve seen it accomplished by Elaine Israel on a daily basis. This is like carrying two full backpacks at once. All day long.  Every day. The difference here is that when the school world departs at 2:45, Elaine remains ‘on post’. Offering the best of service to ‘all who enter here’ to coin another familiar phrase. I watched closely as she crossed the classroom countless times to provide yet one more mathematical solution after another to students desperate to see the light at the end of some mathematical tunnel. Elaine was untiring in her efforts.  Always on the go. For her, EVERY DAY IS LIKE THIS. Then she remains as the busses disappear, it's 3pm now. Another classroom with students eager to take advantage of Mrs. Israel's skills and unlimited patience. Somehow, Elaine has never learned how to complain. She is definitely ‘twice the teacher.”

Kimberly Adams, Joshua DeSmyter, and Katie Vandawalker, Shrevewood ES

"The administration and library staff at Shrevewood partnered with the PTA to ensure every student could purchase something at this year's spring book fair. The PTA's community outreach chair and school staff supported 200 vouchers affording kids (who otherwise may not be able to) an opportunity to participate in this beloved elementary school tradition. Staff members commented that, in the past, they have observed students who were visibly upset because they did not have money to spend at the book fair. This year, though, all reports were of happy kids who loved the feeling of independence and freedom brought about by this kind gesture. Thank you, Shrevewood!"

Cindy Fitzgerald, Gatehouse Admin Center

"As a principal, I work with staff who are sometimes dealing with sensitive situations. Cindy is an amazing resource for me when the Leave & Disability process is involved. She takes the time to listen to each situation and approaches things from a caring standpoint while also ensuring we follow protocols. I appreciate her responsiveness and commitment to supporting staff within the structures available in FCPS."

Holly Bush, Sara Brewer, and Stephanie Bluestein, West Potomac HS

"Huge shoutout to Sara Brewer, Stephanie Bluestein, and Holly Bush for stepping up and helping two colleagues when they were suddenly overwhelmed with too many home phone calls. Despite having their own calls to do, they added a few of their colleagues to their own lists and got the job done. Thank you for all of your help!"

Young Jang, Food & Nutrition Services

"I am writing to recommend Mrs. Young Jang for an FCPS Cares Award. As the Operation Specialist for Food and Nutrition Services in Region 3, her dedication has greatly impacted our school community. During a recent audit by the VDOE for our Super Snack program, Mrs. Young Jang provided invaluable support. She arrived early to offer guidance and sent us a detailed list of standards to ensure thorough preparation. Mrs. Young Jang's commitment to training is commendable. She provided comprehensive sessions when our team took on meal-ordering responsibilities. Her consistent follow-up ensures timely orders, benefiting our students. I am certain Mrs. Young Jang extends this dedication to all schools under her care. Her proactive efforts and unwavering commitment to excellence deserve recognition. I wholeheartedly recommend Mrs. Young Jang for an FCPS Cares Award. Her professionalism and support make her truly deserving of this honor. Thank you for considering my recommendation."

Enrique Fernandez, Hayfield SS

"Mr. Fernandez supported a student going through a serious matter after hours and ensured the student and family were connected to appropriate resources late into the evening. Thank you, Mr. Fernandez, for being a caring adult in so many of our students' lives!"

Marietta Bradinova, South County MS

"Dr. Bradinova's effort and continued hard work to ensure a sense of continuity for students when their English teacher had to take long-term leave unexpectedly is a testament to her professionalism, empathy, kindness, and profound dedication to our students. Not only did she serve as a mentor for our long-term sub, making herself available at all times and even sacrificing her own much-needed planning time, but she took on additional responsibilities to provide consistency in grading, uninterrupted assignment submissions, and continued quality learning for the students. My words do not begin to describe my admiration for the work she does. She is a servant leader with an impeccable sense of ethics. We are so lucky to work with her!"

-Lori Foarce, South County MS

Dawn Meltzer, Cunningham Park ES

"Thank you so very much for taking leadership of our Kilmer-Thoreau Area Honor Band. The amount of time and energy that you put into its success was apparent in the awesome and joyful performance last night. From setting up electronic registrations, collecting emergency care forms, acquiring a rehearsal space and concert venue, communicating with numerous other directors and parents, figuring out a band set-up design, creating name tags for every student, creating music packets, setting the schedule for the rehearsals and then the schedule within each of those rehearsals, ETC, ETC, ETC. You did it ALL! This was a very large task that you took on voluntarily, and I am grateful to you for your hard work, dedication, and leadership."

Brandon Kosatka, Wilton Woods Center

"Brandon is in the process of providing new DSS with a weekly workshop series and office hours designed to support our cohort with learning the technical and practical steps involved in building the master schedule. This professional development opportunity has been invaluable in developing my working knowledge around critical technology tools to make a meaningful difference in how I analyze, manipulate, and synthesize student and course request data. I feel markedly more prepared for each step in what can feel like an intimidating and overwhelming process. With his support and expertise, I was able to pull all necessary data from SIS, organize that data in Excel/Google Sheets, identify programmatic needs, and be prepared to have informed staffing conversations with my leadership team. He is teaching our cohort a systematic process for building a master schedule that is sustainable, replicable, and flexible to meet the needs of our individual schools. He is also simultaneously teaching technology-based skills that are helping me to be more efficient with my time and work. Giving us the knowledge and tools to manipulate myriad data in a practical and efficient way is helping to ensure that we have plenty of time to build a sturdy and maximally student-centered master schedule. I have also already applied these skills in other aspects of my work as a DSS, including attendance and MTSS data analysis for intervention and progress monitoring, which will ultimately lead to better outcomes for students. Above all, Brandon is prioritizing this project by making time for any of us who request individual work sessions or consultations to support our progress. He has gone above and beyond with me personally, volunteering to dedicate an enormous amount of time over the weekend to support in setting up spreadsheets to capture the data and information I needed for our team staffing discussion. Brandon is responsive, supportive, and highly committed to our success in building a strong master schedule. As a new DSS, I am extremely grateful for his leadership and vision in this much-needed workshop series."

Dharunkumar Sadasivam, Braddock ES

"Dharun is an amazing addition to our Braddock Family this school year. Dharun is one of our site-based substitutes, but he is so much more than that! Dharun is trained to support our EAC classroom and often goes in there just to be extra hands. He knows every child by name and can run a small group extremely well! Every time he supports a classroom, the next day the teachers ask for him to come back and the kids yell his name when they see him. If you ask him to do something, he immediately says yes. Just today he was subbing for a 5th grade classroom, teaching students the lesson for the day, and then reffing their soccer game at recess. His presence has been requested at their promotion party because of his fair reffing skills. When he is supporting the office staff, he is organized, respectful, and goes above and beyond. Currently, when teachers are going to be out, they will request him to cover their classes.  We are so thankful that Dharun is here at Braddock and while teaching is not his long-term plan, working with children comes naturally to him!

Doris Straughn, South County HS

"Mrs. Straughn always goes above and beyond to make sure every single student her class understands the curriculum while having so much fun learning a new language. Her teaching skills are above exceptional and she has helped all her students succeed in her class this year."

Weris Jama, Johnson MS

"This is a recognition of the great work that Weris Jama does in the main office supporting the substitute teacher community at Katherine Johnson Middle School in Fairfax, VA. She is very attentive to details; she shares lesson plans in advance with substitutes when possible; and she makes substitutes feel like they are important members of the Katherine Johnson Middle School staff in providing the learning needs of the children of this school. Weris Jama is a wonderful person and a great asset to Fairfax County Schools."

Tre Fava, Lake Braddock SS

"Testing doesn't get a lot of positive recognition and is often a thankless job. The amount of work is astronomical and the learning curve is steep. I am eternally grateful for Tre and the unwavering support and guidance she has given me this year. She never gets flustered or bothered when I bother her multiple times daily with a million questions and is always willing to show me again how to do an "xlookup", remind me where to find a form or paperwork, and go over the checklist of to-dos multiple times. She has made this office a team in every sense of the word. She is a team player at all times and is always willing to help me as I navigate my new position. Thank you for everything this year! I 100% could not do this job without you."

-Maya Nardone, Lake Braddock SS

------

Brandon Kosatka, Wilton Woods Center

"Brandon has been a beacon of light for the new DSS cohort. He has sacrificed a great deal of time and put in a great deal of effort to ensure that each new DSS has what they need to be successful. He has never hesitated to take a call to answer questions far and wide. He is a subject matter expert and his subject is DSS in FCPS. He has spent countless hours supporting us as we work through challenges of the position throughout the year. He has made himself available on weekends and after hours. We are so thankful for him and could not have made it through our first year without him."

Carla Quiroga-Anello, Laurel Ridge ES

"Carla Quiroga-Anello is a gift to our students, staff, and families. As our family liaison, she bridges partnerships between our school and our community members. She is the kindest, friendliest, and most supportive team member. She has a smile on her face every day, ready to do whatever she can to support those connections. She consistently goes above and beyond what is asked of her. When we had a student transfer into our school the week of our book fair, she made sure to get him a pass to be able to purchase a book. This small gesture meant the world to this student feeling included and welcome. When we had another student move to our school from Bolivia, she made sure the family knew about our Passport Around the World event.  The event was scheduled on the Friday before the student was to start coming to classes. She welcomed them to the event, connected them with other families and staff members. The impact she has is tremendous and I can't imagine our school without her!"

Elizabeth White, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"Bryant High School is a Lighthouse School. We are part of a cohort that is using technology and innovation to work on our school goals and maximize student experience. At our latest Lighthouse planning session our group was frustrated with a program we feel is essential for access for our EL students; however the program is not on the approved list. Elizabeth stopped what she was doing and walked us through the review process. She was so positive and knowledgeable about the process. She could have easily directed us to the form and gone back to her interrupted task. Instead, Elizabeth stuck with us through the lengthy process of the review form, something that could impact significant and lasting change on EL students across Fairfax County. Just a great example of the ripple effect one person can have just by lending their expertise to a group or challenge. Thanks Elizabeth!!"

Aimee Crewalk, Colvin Run ES

"Our first-grade team is so lucky to have Aimee leading us through this school year. Aimee's exceptional leadership goes beyond merely managing tasks; she is the glue that holds our team together. Her can-do spirit is infectious and she tackles challenges with genuine compassion and dedication. Aimee's humility is striking; she takes on preparations for the whole grade level without a second thought, effortlessly shouldering responsibilities to ensure not only the team's success but also the success of our students. Despite the hurdles we face, her smile never fades, serving as a beacon of positivity and resilience for us all. Aimee's unwavering commitment to our team's well-being and success truly exemplifies a leader who goes above and beyond to help others. We are so thankful for Aimee and everything she does for our team, her students, our students, and the greater good of Colvin Run!"

Beth Copeland, Cunningham Park ES

"I would like to commend Beth Copeland at Cunningham Park. My daughter, who can be highly sensitive to change, had a bus-driver swap recently. Because this driver change lasted a week and the route changed slightly, my daughter was upset, as were a few other kids. When I called the school to see what was going on, Beth was already on top of this, gave me all the helpful information, and gave me reassuring directions to provide to my daughter for the next day. She communicated with Transportation, the School VP, and the Principal, who in turn communicated with the temporary driver and reassured the kids. This is just one example of Beth's exemplary communication skills with students, administrators, FCPS staff, and parents. She must deal with 100's of these instances each day and she is ALWAYS calm, reassuring, and objective while putting both the kids and parents at ease. Over the years I have always thought of her as someone who is truly professional, a great communicator, and someone who gets things done. Thank you, Beth!"

Michael Dennis and Kristin Bennink, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"Michael Dennis and Kristin Bennink are two absolute rock stars that support South Lakes HS students directly by coming to our regular "group five day" meetings we hold. They have meaningful conversations with students to problem solve their attendance challenges, fill out the required paperwork, debrief with our teammates and are excellent with our kids! We are so grateful for them and are able to serve more students due to their efforts."

Donald Malkowski, Robinson SS

"Mr. Malkowski is an amazing teacher. My son has not shown a lot of interest in coding before this class with Mr. Malkowski, but he is really interested in it now. According to my son, Mr. Malkowski is very passionate about his subject matter and makes things so interesting, clear, and understandable when he teaches. He opens up opportunities for kids outside of school, such as FBLA. He is great at communicating with parents. I get regular emails about what is going on in class, which I really appreciate. We are so grateful for teachers like Mr. Malkowski who help kids discover new interests and love learning."

Paul Laguna, Lake Braddock SS

"Paul Laguna was instrumental in helping secure the bulk of our student help at the Lake Braddock All Night Grad party fundraising mulch sale that took place on March 16th and 17th. Not only did these "soon-to-be" Bruin football players carry thousands of bags of mulch, they unselfishly gave hours of their time to support this worthwhile cause. THANK YOU Mr. Laguna for helping ensure this fundraiser was a great success!!"

Meredith Leech, Hunt Valley ES

"Meredith Leech, a kindergarten teacher at Hunt Valley, consistently goes above and beyond for the students in her class. She reached out regularly when my daughter was going through a difficult time when in her class last year. She had helpful suggestions and incentives that she implemented in class with my kindergartener, and spent 30 minutes on the phone with me several times to get insights on how she was doing, and how Ms. Leech could support her. By the end of the school year, she and my daughter had worked together to find strategies that worked for her. Now in first grade, she has had a smooth transition, continuing to use the tools and strategies Ms. Leech helped her discover. My daughter was one of 29 students in her class, and yet other parents also say they feel so cared for by Ms. Leech. She really is a gem. I've had kids in FCPS for 7 years now, and there's no one who takes better care of her students."

Vince Wang, Sprague Technology Center

"Vince has absolutely saved me numerous times while supporting the students and staff here at Louise Archer ES. He is incredibly knowledgeable and thorough. He is also amazingly positive and enthusiastic whenever I interact with him. Recently, during the transition to the new VPN client and the end of text MFA, Vince gave several staff members "just in time" support that allowed them to continue working with students, without missing a beat. I am grateful to Vince for all of his guidance. His expertise and enthusiasm make FCPS a much better place to work."

Connor Maguder, Fort Hunt ES

"Our wonderful adaptive PE teacher Connor Maguder adapts the PE curriculum and helps when he can in the enhanced autism classroom. Connor really connects with students and ensures their success. He is also at more than one school which can make a demanding job even more stressful. Despite this, he rises to the challenge cheerfully and is always the consummate professional. Thank you, Connor for all that you do at Fort Hunt!"

Alyson Schumacher, Fort Belvoir Upper School

"There are some people who are meant to be teachers when they grow up, and Alyson Schumacher is certainly one of them. Over the course of this school year, she has demonstrated her love for her students and has gone above and beyond for them time and time again. Her classroom is a comfortable place for her students to come and learn not only academically, but socially and emotionally. She herself is a safe place for her students as she takes the time to get to know each one and advocate for them whenever needed. As a parent, I have been so glad to have open communication and support from her throughout my son’s third grade year as she has always responded quickly to any concerns or questions and has happily filled out countless forms and questionnaires whenever I have requested them. As the daughter of a former teacher, I know the amount of time teachers give to their students and I can not thank Alyson enough for what I can only imagine is hours of work weekly outside of the school day. I have had the opportunity to speak to the parents of past and current students and the sentiment is the same each time, we are all extremely grateful for her and her commitment to our children."

Leslie Grant, Mary-Elizabeth Hagaman, Elizabeth Litvany, and Cheyenne Cole, McNair ES

"This group of specialists works tirelessly to promote my daughter’s speech and behavior with the transition to Kindergarten. Even in my firmness and strong stances for my daughter’s sake, they honor my requests with such grace and compassion. Most people say things with words but they mean their love for my daughter through action. To see her blossom with such a strong partnership between home and school means the world to our family. We have a long way to go but I am happy my child is learning to let down her walls to let her educators in."

Her words and actions demonstrate that she CARES for her students and wants what is best for them, we need more teachers like Kelly McMillan!"

Fatemeh Towhidi, Gatehouse Admin Center

"While serving at Dranesville last week, Fatemeh Towhidi learned of a student who wanted to purchase a book from the book fair. Unfortunately, the book fair had ended and was packed up. Today, a week later, Fetemeh returned to Dranesville and had purchased the book for the student. This incredibly generous act was above and beyond, to say the least, and it meant the world to the student and everyone in the student's circle of love. FCPS Cares, indeed! Thank you!"

They quickly and efficiently organized a plan to ensure that all students had their needed supports. From lunch duty, to testing, to bus duties, and to general classroom duties, there was not a single student that day that did not have their needs met. Eric Painter, Rolling Valley ES

"Eric Painter, as a first year assistant principal, has demonstrated unwavering dedication and loyalty to a community that he has only recently joined. Eric is passionate about the work that he does and the students he serves. In additional to the innumerable responsibilities of his job, Eric can often be seen enjoying lunch bunches with students, helping in the cafeteria, supporting students in crisis, engaging with teams during CLTs, asking questions, and learning new curriculum alongside staff. Eric has quickly built meaningful relationships with both students and staff, several students visit Eric's office daily, whether it is to ask to try on his "funny Eagles hat", play a board game to regulate, stim with fidgets before talking about their day, or snuggle with stuffed dinosaurs before dismissal. Eric has already made an impact on our school team and the way we talk about students. He supports our shift to using asset based language and asks meaningful questions to support staff with reframing their thinking. Eric's most asked questions to staff have been, "how are you doing"' and "what do you need right now"? Eric's questioning is genuine and empathetic. He is dedicated to making sure that staff engage in self care practices so they can be more available to help students. Eric's ability to diffuse tension is admirable - he will always come back to the issue and ensure that a resolution is found but knows when a break is required. Eric brings a fresh perspective to our local screening process and, while continuing to learn the process, has help redefine norms and expectations within meetings. Eric has organized and facilitated standardized testing this year which is quite an impressive feat in itself however, an added complication on Eric's plate is ensuring that all students with disabilities have the accommodations coded and available as listed on their IEPs. As a small school with a large population of students receiving special education services, this has been an enormous undertaking. Nevertheless, Eric has taken on these responsibilities, and more, without pause. Eric is positive, energetic, upbeat, a team player, kind, empathetic, a learner, and a genuine joy to have as an administrator. Our Rockin Robin staff, students, and community are stronger with him in the nest."

However, this time he was even willing to brainstorm with me through a presentation I was making at a state Library conference on STEAM in the library when I had hit a wall with my own thinking. He was willing to work with me numerous times if needed. Chris truly is a partner in STEAM education and leadership in FCPS. Chef Devlin has not only ensured the students in the program continue to have hands on learning opportunities but he has gone above and beyond to continue to support programs outside of the classroom. This morning he came in early to bake cinnamon rolls to be sold by DECA members at their Purple Expresso coffee bar before school. It is great to have a retired teacher come back as a sub and continue to do so much to support students!"

Erin Brunk, West Potomac HS

"Erin Brunk is my son's 9th grade English teacher. He always used to love reading but didn't connect with the middle school English teachers. This year is such a change! He has expressed frequently how much he enjoys the class and has been talking at home about the Shakespeare unit they are currently engaged with, reading Romeo and Juliet. "Vexed" has come into his vocabulary and he lets us know that it was worth it to go through teachers that he didn't feel a connection with to get to Ms Brunk. He loves her use of memes to connect to content and her laid back attitude. What a great experience to see my 15 year old son comparing himself to Tybalt in a Shakespeare play and looking forward to learning more!"

Anne Bridges and Jae Hwan Lee, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"I want to thank our wonderful bus driver supervisors of Team 47 in area 4, Anne Bridges and Jae Hwan Lee. The 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 school years in transportation have not been easy due to the lack of drivers, retirements and illnesses that have occurred. Despite these obstacles and others, both Anne and Jae have cooperated to hold our team together.  They have been present, understanding, empathetic and put student safety first in ALL situations. Until one puts themselves in the middle of what really happens behind the scenes of FCPS school bus transportation it is hard to understand what these two individuals have had to undergo. On any given morning (or afternoon), a bus can breakdown, a driver can call in sick, traffic can halt to a standstill, and these can occur at the same time. Quick reaction and knowledge of routes at a moments notice by both Anne and Jae have proven beneficial to making what would seem a chaotic day into a smooth sailing experience. They work with team members to accommodate their needs and are always open to suggestions and recommendations. I want to thank them for their outstanding concern for all the components of FCPS transportation, the students and their parents, school administration, and mostly for the care that they give to each other and to their Team 47."

Jacob McMichael, Orange Hunt ES

"Mr. Jacob Michael is a PE instructor and Coordinator for the Patrol Program at Orange Hunt Elementary School. He does an outstanding job engaging the 5th and 6th grade patrols and going above and beyond what is expected. In a school that has few male role models, he serves as an approachable, positive, outgoing role model for male students. He constantly engages and interacts with patrols through his patrol meetings while serving lemonade. In PE class, he is always trying innovative and unique games. He has a very good connection with fellow students and can easily resolve student conflict at the lowest level through discussion and mediation. He knows every student's first name and has a keen interest in their personal growth and success.
Kudos to Mr. McMichael for fostering a very comfortable, stable and positive school environment for students."

Anita Hartley and Derrick Rauenzahn, Madison HS

"Anita and Derrick have gone above and beyond in sharing their experiences, knowledge, and resources around the instructional shifts they have supported at Madison High School. When we began similar work at Herndon HS last Spring, I was feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of being an instructional leader through a period of change. Anita and Derrick have responded to every question I have had with empathy and enthusiasm and have met with me numerous times over the last 10 months to collaborate around the work. Each time we meet, they are fully present and incredibly encouraging and positive. They never hesitate to share their resources and creations and never seem to tire of my endless questions. The resources they have shared have also been extremely well through-out and clearly organized; they are easily accessible by their own staff and by those outside their building. I am so grateful that they opened that first email I sent! I have truly enjoyed and benefitted from their collaboration and guidance."

"Mrs. Norma Bergaust came into our class as a long term sub at the beginning of the year. She led our highly intelligent students that like to push the boundaries through December. A full time teacher was hired. She left the position after only six weeks. When Norma was asked to come back into the classroom, her first response was, "Those poor children, of course."  During that time period she took classes so she could become their full time teacher. She also left the High Impact Tutoring Math position to become their permanent teacher. Norma commands the class with grace and kindness. When it was announced to the students, enthusiasm permeated the room. I am truly blessed to work with such a remarkable woman."

Our team members have varying levels of understanding and comfort with POG and Abbey made each teacher feel capable, confident, and inspired. Abbey met with us as a small group to dive into the history of POG and POGPOL, instructional practice, POGPOL examples and expectations, and more. Just days before she and Matt and came for a chemical pick up, a teacher dropped off a large amount of chemicals that I did not have time to completely sort through, but Mandy and Matt agreed to pick up the extra chemicals I knew about, and then spent hours here at the school going through the things I hadn't so that it didn't have to wait several months for the next pick up window. Today, I called to see if she could help my student who went to school without lunch (who has never bought lunch at Robinson). It’s a pleasure working with someone so kind and caring who always has a smile on her face. Lucinda engages in collaborative teamwork and contributes to a positive school culture. She builds positive relationships with staff and all stakeholders. You can tell by working with her how much pride she takes in her role and it’s evident by her interactions with you. I could not have completed the After-school enrichment program without her hard work and support. Lucinda is a valuable member of our school community and Bailey’s Upper is lucky to have her.

Miranda Hendershot, Hayfield SS

"Ms. Miranda Hendershot, a relatively recent addition to Hayfield Secondary's Administration team, is a true "lead by example" Assistant Principal. For starters, she always comes to work with a can do and positive attitude, that seemingly never wanes irregardless of how her day unfolds. In our cafeteria during breakfast duty, she is warm, and engaging with the student body, expressing positive messages to individual students about making good and positive decisions during their day, while at the same time holding students accountable for their actions, and is able to convey stern reminders in a warm and positive tone. As she walks the halls during the day, she is always available for a quick chat, and empowers her student body, and staff to be their best. Her approach helps everyone who encounters her, to feel heard, and supported, and thus ready to seize the day."

Genie McCreery, Bryant HS

"At Bryant HS we frequently have to deal with unexpected changes to our classes due to a variety of factors. For example, we recently had some classes filling-up in our department and developed a plan to create a new section with a new teacher. In other words, asking a teacher to teach a new course mid-year in order to create the best environment for our students. When I approached Genie McCreery, one of our social studies staff about this idea, not only was she quick to accept the assignment, but she also immediately began to invest her time and energy into the course in order to engage students and grow as a professional. Not only was it helpful logistically, but for me, it also serves as a great example of a dedicated professional putting the needs of the students first, and prioritizing the mission of the school."

Rachael Smith, Fort Hunt ES

"Rachael Smith possesses a superior knowledge of our FCPS procedures. If you have ANY questions, find a convenient moment and ask her! She has an answer. Rachael teaches the child not only what a calm body looks like at Fort Hunt, but more importantly what it feels like internally. She transfers that knowledge to the child so the child can now regulate herself/himself in a timely fashion. She has a compassionate heart for both the achievers and those who are in the moment struggling. She even finds the time to lead our Equity training. Together with Ms. Taylor, Ms. Blanco, and Ms. Pritchard and the hardest working IA’s in the business, kindergarten is an educational force of nature. I may not have become a teacher trainee without her unknowing tutelage. She deserves the honor."
