February 20, 2025 School Board Meeting Highlights

Meeting Opening

At 7:00 p.m., the School Board Regular Meeting was called to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, a performance of the National Anthem by the Daniels Run Elementary School Singers under the direction of Michelle McCarten, and a performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing by the Justice High School Chamber Choir under the direction of Miranda Lansberry.

The School Board approved proclamation honoring Custodians and Food & Nutrition Services Employees Appreciation Month and School Bus Driver, Bus Attendants, and Crossing Guard Appreciation Month.

Community Participation

The School Board heard from 7 members of the public during Community Participation.

Student Representative Matters

Student Representative Megan Sawant presented Student Representative Matters to the School Board.

Action Items

The School Board unanimously adopted the FY 2026 Advertised Budget. This budget invests in excellence for all students as we raise academic standards, provides competitive compensation for the recruitment and retention of world-class educators, and ensures FCPS acts as responsible custodians of tax dollars.

Strategic Plan Goal Report

School Board oversight and monitoring of the Strategic Plan is achieved through consideration of regularly scheduled goal reports to demonstrate the work accomplished and the results achieved. Each approved report provides a comprehensive review of one of the five Strategic Plan goals areas, with a secondary focus on essential updates in the other four goal areas. In addition, the reports outline major Strategic Plan activities for the coming year that are designed to address areas in need of improvement. Goal reports involve three components – a written draft report, a School Board work session to discuss the draft report, and a public presentation on the final report.

Superintendent Reid presented a report on Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence. The School Board approved the SY2024-25 Goal 3 Report.

Presentations to the School Board

Dr. Reid presented Academic Matters on Career and Technical Education.

Consent Agenda

The School Board approved the minutes of the January 9, 2025 meeting, additional Advisory Committee Appointments, a Mathematics Basal Instructional Resource Review Committee, the January 2025 Monthly Employee Separation report, and several contracts.

Meeting Closing

Mr. Dunne gave a Comprehensive Planning and Development Committee report, Ms. Lady gave a Governance Committee report and Ms. St. John-Cunning gave a Public Engagement Committee report.

Dr. Reid presented Superintendent Matters to the School Board.

Finally, the School Board regular meeting concluded with Board Matters. The Regular Meeting adjourned at 10:26 p.m.
