Visually-Impaired Forestdale Student, Teacher Use Technology to Help Understand Content
A lot of effort goes into the lessons that teachers create for students remotely. When a student has a low incidence disability, such as being blind, their creative gears work in overdrive. The Forestdale Elementary student in the picture is listening to a lesson in Blackboard Collaborate Ultra (BBCU) while his teacher of the visually impaired (TVI) shares the contents of the slide and makes the content understandable. The student then tells the TVI what to type. The student has learned to raise his hand, lower his hand, open and close his microphone, move himself to different groups, change his status, and continues to gain new skills that make technology more accessible to students with visual impairment. The student engages in lessons more readily when the classroom teacher and specialists turn visual illustrations into auditory sources of learning.
