FCPS Cares of the Month Recipients

Central:  Brad Hollis, Instructional Programs Support Center

"Brad Hollis and his team have delivered over 21 pallets of new clothing that was donated to our office from National Center for Children and Families. His team took the time to mix the boxes of clothing so Title 1 schools were able to receive a variety of new clothing to disperse to students and families at their family markets.  I am most appreciated of Brad and his team for going the extra mile to break down the clothing pallets and mix them up so each school community was able to benefit from various clothing and sizes from NCCF's generous donation."

Region 1:

Nick Sylor, James Madison HS

"As I was going through a very challenging personal situation when my father was critically ill back in India, Nick took care of my classes in addition to his own classes.  He made lesson plans for my classes and was teaching both his classes and my classes. This helped me at least not to worry about my work for the 1 1/2 weeks that I was not in school while I was coping with this situation at home.  Thank you Nick for being a great teammate and I appreciate all the support!"

- Jyothsna Vallampati, James Madison HS

and

Padma Iddamalgoda, James Madison HS

"As I was going through a very challenging personal situation when my father was critically ill back in India, Dr. P took care of my AP chemistry classes in addition to her own classes. She was teaching both her classes and my AP Chem classes.  Additionally, She stayed after school in BBCU Links to explain difficult concepts to the students who came for after-school support. This helped me at least not to worry about my work for the 1 1/2 weeks that I was not in school while I was coping with this situation at home.  Thank you, Dr. P  for being a great teammate and I appreciate all the support!"

- Jyothsna Vallampati, James Madison HS

Region 2:  Joshua Floyd, Glasgow MS

"My daughter had started to feel pretty anxious about her history class because of the reading level of the handouts that were required reading.  She was feeling deflated and overwhelmed.  I reached out to her teacher, Mr. Floyd and the counselor concerned that the class may be a little more that she could handle.   Right away Mr. Floyd stepped in and offered to read the articles with her and help her get through them.  She had a meeting schedule with him during his office hours, needless to say she was very nervous for the meeting, she had an upset stomach, was sweaty and wanted to avoid the meeting.  As the meeting progressed, she became more comfortable with reading and giving her opinion.  I was so impressed with the level of patience Mr. Floyd had with her, his encouragement and telling her he believed in her. After the meeting was over, she was glowing and had a really big smile on her face.  She said to me "I think I just grew 20 new brain cells"!!  You have no idea how happy that made me, coming from her.  She had a whole new confidence and pride in knowing that she was able to understand what she read and was able to put her thoughts and opinions into words and share them in post. Though Mr. Floyd went above and beyond and spent close to 2 hours with her, not once did he make her feel rushed.  After her post, she stayed on the computer and extra hour, reading others posts and making comments out loud either agreeing or disagreeing with the comments she was reading. Thank you again Mr. Floyd for all you do and for being such an encouraging and patient teacher.  I want you know that you are making a difference with my daughter."

--------

Region 3: Angela Perez, Whitman MS

"Today Mrs. Perez observed a student who was communicating a lot of sad emotions through the chat feature on BBCU.   Although we are only five weeks into the school year, Mrs. Perez has taken a lot of time to build positive relationships with her students, and for this particular student (who does not easily share personal information) she found out that the family was experiencing a significant medical crisis and needed food for the weekend.  Mrs. Perez immediately followed up with the parent, school social worker, and decided to purchase (out of pocket) and deliver groceries to the student’s house. Thank you for being kind and always putting your students first, Mrs. Perez!"

--------

Region 4:  Kristy Carballo, Robinson SS

From a parent:  "One of my daughter's teachers, Mrs. Carballo, has been fantastic! I contacted her a couple of times when my daughter had a panic attack during her class to explain why my daughter did poorly on a quiz and another time. Both times, Mrs. Carballo was so kind and gentle. Also, with the kiddos on the first day of school - it was my daughter's first class and she was so nervous and was shaking - but when Mrs. Carballo started class with games and get-to-know-you activities and had them choose a motivational quote, I was blown away! My daughter started smiling and even giggled at one point 😊. I want her to know how incredible she made my daughter's first experience, who even said, “Wait mom - I think I can do this!”  She is amazing and she ought to know it- I know she’s working on her masters she said in online education ironically.  She couldn’t be more well-suited for the task!  I’ve told her she has definitely found her calling and that she is clearly following the calling she was designed for- her students (and their families) are so very lucky to have her!"

--------

Region 5:  Emily Tobin and Michelle McCoy, Deer Park ES

"Recently, the Deer Park community suffered a tragedy. We lost the mom of one of our students unexpectedly. Immediately, Emily and Michelle contacted the family to check on the student. They scheduled a time to visit him in person later that day. Emily and Michelle talked with the family to determine what supports they might need. They then set up a schedule for staff to make meals for the family. Additionally, they created a schedule for lunch bunch meetings with the student and other staff members. Their swift response, kind hearts and caring attitude helped this family feel loved, valued and supported during a terrible time."

Jeana Allen, Keene Mill ES

"Mrs. Allen has done a amazing job of keeping her students engaged and present. My son who is brand new to this area and so social I thought would really be struggling with this, but Mrs. Allen has put forth a structured environment where her students know what she expects of them. She has been great for my 5th Grader and has made a hard time to move in life a bit easier for him."

Oliver Goodridge, South Lakes HS

"Oliver is a new school counselor in his first year at South Lakes and he has been working tirelessly with me, our AVID teacher and our SOSA to help reengage students in the virtual environment. We have been collaborating and connecting almost daily to work on supporting one individual student and Oliver brings a positive and optimistic mindset to each conversation. He has gone out into the community for engagement visits and his persistence is so needed and so appreciated. In just two short months it feels like Oliver has always been a Seahawk and I'm so glad to be working alongside him in supporting all students."

- Emily Cincinnati, South Lakes HS

--------

Kathleen Friesen, Canterbury Woods ES

"My child has been learning, growing, and flourishing in Erin Ferguson's class this year. Ms. Ferguson has tackled the challenges of distance learning and conquered them - from small tech hiccups to translating her lessons to a screen to teaching kids not just new content but new web applications. She makes sure that students AND their parents know she is there for them. We appreciate the level of communication we receive from her. She keeps students engaged through the long hours online. She is organized and her organization is helping my student to become organized as well. She's promoted an excellent digital classroom culture, helped students learn many new things, and constantly promoted a growth mindset. From the little fun things that bring a group together to the nuts and bolts of educating students, Ms. Ferguson does it all."

Derek House, Sprague Technology Center

"Derek is a compassionate person who always goes above and beyond to make your interaction with him collaborative. Yesterday morning, I had to pick up an order from the TMPC Center in the pouring rain. I sent an email letting him know I was on my way and when I pulled up, he met me outside with a huge umbrella and escorted me inside. When I was ready to leave, he grabbed his umbrella and walked me back out in the pouring down rain to my car. Derek is a kind, caring, customer service friendly employee who always makes the customer his number one priority. Thank you, Derek!"

- Shelli Wayland, Gatehouse Administration

--------

Tracey Phillips, Robinson SS

"Tracey Phillips is a kind, caring, collaborative, and helpful, individual. I sent her an email at 2:40 pm on Tuesday, October 21 with the subject of "Question/Request". She responded within a minute “with no problem, when would you like to pick them up?” During this busy time, with principals being pulled in 100 different directions, Tracey took time out of her day to accommodate my request. When I arrived at the school to pick up the items, the items were waiting for me by the front door. The contactless pickup was quick and easy. Tracey went above and beyond to assist me for an event that isn't in her pyramid or region. The COVID compliant event on November 9 will be even more special because of Tracey and Robinson Secondary's kind and caring culture."

- Shelli Wayland, Gatehouse Administration

Mrs. Goble is an amazing teacher and does such a good job explaining the material in an engaging and clear way. Mrs. Goble just has such good energy and she's so encouraging and understanding and really puts in the effort to make sure we have a good understanding of the concepts but doesn't give us an overwhelming amount of work. She's such a good teacher and I appreciate everything she does for us!

We cannot thank her enough for giving her time and expertise to us."

Mr. Perez is an amazing kindergarten instructional assistant. He is so caring with the students. I appreciate his caring nature and the conversations he has with the students. He always encourages my son and makes him happy. It is these little things I really appreciate. We are lucky to have him. Thank you Mr. Perez.

Silke Fundaro, Transportation - Lorton

"This was emailed to our office from a parent and we wanted to ensure Silke was recognized:  'I just had to send a quick note. I live over by Cherry Run off Wilmington Dr. My kids were on bikes and I was probably a block behind them because of our puppy. I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Both my kids were on either side of Wilmington. When I got closer I told my son to cross Wilmington to his sister. Then I saw what was going on. One of your amazing drivers had stopped on Burke Lake because they saw my kids and was trying to protect them. Honestly I couldn’t get over that the bus driver had stopped to check on my kids, let my kids pass and was watching over them until I got there. She was waiting till she knew they were safe. I waved and with a happy heart was so impressed. This meant so much to me while my kids aren’t in school your drivers are still taking care of our kids.,"

- Carlton Ellis (on behalf of a parent), Transportation - Lorton

--------

Allison Jankovich, Sangster ES

"Ms. Jankovich is the acting principal at Sangster Elementary in an almost impossible year with no way to make everyone happy, she goes out of her way to communicate with the parent community and responds to emails at all hours of the day and night with compassion and kindness.  As a parent, I know it is impossible to make everyone happy and as a teacher myself, I know just how hard it is going to be to adjust student schedules and teach in this new model.  I'm so impressed that Ms. Jankovich continues to include both parents and teachers in conversations about supporting students.  Every email she sends shows her passion as an educator, how much she cares for every student at Sangster, and how much she supports and believes in her teachers. Thank You!"

--------

Susan Fox, Westfield HS

"Susan is conscientious, thorough, and reliable, and she regularly goes above and beyond her role as Assessment Coach.  During item collection events in Spring and Summer, she created and maintained a database to keep track of student obligations, and she emailed each individual student to inform them of their respective fines/owed materials.  She also sent students their login information for Freshman Orientation and served as the point of contact for all questions relating to both of these events.  Furthermore, Susan has been instrumental in the professional development and support for teachers regarding Schoology and she is a key member of our MTSS team. In the summer, she used data from the 19-20 school year to identify students who would potentially struggle with distance learning this year, and then she led an initiative to survey their parents so we could anticipate their students' struggles and begin to develop resources to support them.  She is always willing to support the collection, analysis, and synthesis of data, and prior to our weekly kid talks, she provides each MTSS team member with data to help us identify areas of concern.  She has also supported the SPED department by spending countless hours to streamline the communication process for case managers as it relates to progress monitoring.  All of this is in addition to planning and ensuring a safe and secure testing environment for all standardized tests, including the SAT and PSAT."

- Dana Ouart, Westfield HS

--------

Brian Welfle, Hollin Meadows ES

"Music class tends to be one of the under appreciated classes, yet very important classes, in grade school.  Mr. Welfle has always been a popular and fun teacher among the students, but I never really understood why until I have had the privilege of observing his classes through virtual learning. Mr. Welfle not only teaches the students important foundations in music such as instruments, notes, and beats but he is opening their worlds to various musical styles and genres. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, he is hilarious and has the students so engaged in his classes with his creativity, sense of humor, encouragement and knowledge.  He makes them want to understand and like music.  It is like a half hour comedy show where the kids (and now parents) can walk away with new musical knowledge and songs!  He is so fantastic!"

- a Hollin Meadows ES Parent

--------

Kelly Brady, Willow Oaks

"Dr. Brady is a great listener but most importantly takes action when she hears that one of the many programs in NSP has a challenge.  Dr. Brady Has met with all of the NSP administrators and head their concerns.  I have seen immediate action and solutions provided for all of the challenges that I shared with her during our initial meeting.  She continues to advocate for each of the programs.  She has convinced me that as long as the administrators trust her and share challenges, she will work to ensure changes are made.  She has been with NSP since July and has convinced me that she is the best support we have ever seen to date"

- Kimberly Taylor, Mountain View HS

Jacob Fannon, Stratford Landing ES

"Mr. Fannon has great rapport with the students at Stratford Landing Elementary!  He teaches P.E. classes and he comes up with creative ways to get children moving!  He has developed a relationship by touching upon many different interests within our school community through his fun facts in the morning news segments such as his Pokemon cards of the day or his fun sports facts. I would say P.E. is a difficult class to translate into the virtual setting, however, Mr. Fannon adds games like racing around to find different items in your house, obstacle courses with objects in your home, or different static workouts with a timer and music to keep it fun!  During the break times in between exercises, he fills those moments with interactive quizzes or polls to  keep the students engaged that have health facts to discuss regarding nutrition, health, sleep, and exercise at their age.  My children find Mr. Fannon to be enthusiastic and funny and they look forward to their class time with him each week.  Mr. Fannon uses his tech savvy skills to make his classes more engaging.  He is a great person and he genuinely cares about his students and it shines through his dedication in teaching!"

Monica Harrison, Gatehouse Administration

"On top of all the other duties, MONICA HARRISON took the time to call me twice yesterday afternoon and early evening to answer my many questions regarding COVID leave and other types of leave.  At one point I needed to stop the conversation to take care of a personal matter at home, but she kept to her word and called me back in a timely manner.   I know how busy HR must
be with COVID matters and questions coming in all directions, on top of all the regular questions and concerns employees have.  The never-ending, overwhelming number of requests must be stressful, but Monica happily took the time to help me and did not rush my questions or concerns. Thank you so much MONICA HARRISON for giving me guidance so that I may better understand the processes and protocols this year, and in general.  She is knowledgeable and so very pleasant, personable, patient, understanding, and friendly!   She truly cares and goes above and beyond in order to help our employees and explain things clearly and concisely.  Monica even emailed me later to offer her assistance for any other concerns or questions I may have.  Thank you!"

-  Jacquie Naughton, Lake Braddock SS

-------

Kat Frazier and Emily Owens, Lake Braddock SS

"Thursday afternoon, I sent emails to Kat and Emily. I asked if they could possibly fill out a form for a student they had in their respective classes last year, that he really needed for a doctor's appointment. They both responded in the affirmative and asked when I needed the form. I told them, "tonight or early tomorrow morning".  At 9:00 that evening and 7:30 the following morning, I was picking up the completed forms.  Their completed forms led to a student being found eligible for services that allow him to remain in the support classes he needs to graduate this year. Kat and Emily are helping kids who aren't even in their classes anymore. So grateful."

-------

Yvonne Dacey, Stratford Landing ES

"Ms. Dacey has had a wonderful influence on the 6th graders at Stratford Landing Elementary School.  She teaches math and she comes up with unique projects to make the math fun and applicable.  In one particular assignment, "Make the Dream Team," students put themselves in the shoes of a coach and look at the stats of players in terms of fractions, decimals, and percentages to determine which players you may put on the team.  The lesson provides an interesting way to make comparisons.  The students are dealing with consumer math right now and they calculate discounts and tips and this particular subject itself can be directly applicable to the students as consumers and helping to make wise decisions in the real world.  Ms. Dacey also has daily check-ins that give the students an opportunity to review while also encouraging participation and engagement among each student.  In the midst of so much change this year, Ms. Dacey has made her expectations clear as a strong communicator, she has been adaptable to the new virtual learning system this year and patiently helped students through the process. We are very fortunate to have her teaching talents at Stratford Landing Elementary!"

Abby Holzinger, Eagle View ES

"Abby is the School Based Technology Specialist at Eagle View ES.  Abby has been so helpful to me in so many ways.  First she is a very patient teacher and is always willing to help me with my computer technology questions.  She is very knowledgeable in all the programs FCPS uses and has even made herself available to me for a private Pear Deck lesson.  She will answer my same questions over and over and always does so with a smile or quick response through email.  Abby is also on our attendance committee and is an incredible asset in helping the team keep the attendance data organized; she is always willing to take on the technology needs, whether it's a new spreadsheet or website for resources, Abby always does it happily.   I recently learned
that Abby is also working with students virtually in the classroom to teach them new technology.  She has been a great asset to me and I know to many at the school."

Jon Fredrick, Oak View ES

"Mr. Fredrick has gone above and beyond to make virtual learning a positive experience for the kids.  It is clear how much time he is spending to design lessons to not only keep the kids engaged, but challenged.  He is planning activities that allow them to show their knowledge and provides timely and supportive feedback.  He is explicitly teaching them organization skills that will benefit them tremendously when they move on to middle school.  Most importantly, he is connecting with the kids on a personal level.  My son feels cared for and supported.  He is constantly sharing anecdotes or facts he has learned from Mr. Fredrick.  Teaching and connecting with kids is hard! Teaching and connecting with them through a computer seems to be Mr. Fredrick's super power."

Danielle Delo and Heather Morley, Centreville ES

"We want to thank Ms. Delo and Ms. Morley for all that they are doing for our twins and their classmates.  Every day they engage their students in creative lessons with patience and flexibility.  They are incredibly responsive to any questions we have as first-time kindergarten parents.  Their creative lessons address their academic needs, but they always find ways to weave social emotional learning in everyday.  And oh the patience!  Our daughters are thriving in their classroom and the girls are excited everyday to share what they are learning with us. We cannot imagine how much time and effort they must be putting in to create such an enriching environment for our young learners.  While we can see the tremendous amount of work that Ms. Delo and Ms. Morley put it to every lesson, they make it all look effortless.  And did I mention patience?!  We are so grateful to have such a fantastic team supporting our girls in their first year of school."

"Laura Reed is an essential member of the Frost MS team whose extraordinary contributions have been the backbone of distance learning at our school during COVID time. Without Laura, many of the tasks that seem seamless, would not be. I would especially like to shine a light on her herculean efforts to rejuvenate and enhance our staff Google Site which is now the central one-stop-shop resource for staff for everything. In preparing this resource she listened to the needs and concerns of her staff, and she worked tirelessly on this phenomenal resource that will centralize information in an easy to find way that will save time and reduce stress for our staff. This is one project among many for Laura, however it is indicative of the dedication she brings to her job everyday. Thank you so much, Laura!"

She also takes great pride in her cafeteria team. Recently she offered her team's services to us in the library to help with our library inventory. Our daunting task was to scan 21,743 books. With the help of Mahnaz and her team, we accomplished this in three days. Dedicated, hard-working, and always with a positive, can-do attitude, the Frost cafeteria team helped us finish our inventory in record time. We are grateful for their help. We were also happy to have this opportunity to get to know our awesome cafeteria team better. Thank you, Mahnaz!"

Michael Keryeski, Ravensworth ES

"Michael Keryeski, also known as Mr. K, is a P.E. teacher at Ravensworth. He often encourages his students to send him the dates, times, and locations of their sports games so that he can go watch them play. On October 13, Mr. K. came to my twin boys' baseball game because they and a few other students from our team and the opposing team asked him to come. He sat with us in the bleachers and watched the ENTIRE game, cheering loudly for each of his students and praising them every time they tried their best. He even took photos (masked and socially distanced) with some of the students after the game. I cannot describe how excited my boys and the other kids were to have Mr. K there. Not only did it encourage them to try harder to do their best, but it made them feel like their teacher really cared about them. My boys talked about it for days afterward. And during the game, Mr. K told us about many other sports games he'd attended. He said he always tries his hardest to attend games when students invite him. What an incredible, caring teacher!"

Eunyi Park, Lemon Road ES

"Mrs. Park was my daughter's second grade teacher and while my daughter is now in third grade, her love for Mrs. Park is just as strong as ever. The transition to third grade and a new teacher in a virtual learning environment has been hard on my daughter. She loves to form relationships with her teachers and that's been much harder for her to do this year with not being able to turn cameras on during class.  However, I knew that spending some time with Mrs. Park would go a long way in helping her out. Though she is no longer my daughter's teacher, Mrs. Park has graciously offered her time to spend 30 minutes having a video chat with my daughter. As a teacher she is able to reach her and talk to her about school in a way that I'll never be able to. Even with a new class and three kids of her own at home, Mrs. Park is so giving of herself and her time and it does not go unnoticed. We are so appreciative of all she does and are so thankful she's part of the Lemon Road community."

"Mrs. Child has been an amazing teacher to her first-grade students all year thus far. Virtual teaching is not for the weak and Mrs. Child has made it a point of keeping her classroom structured while also keeping it fun and engaging for her students. She makes sure everyone has a chance to participate, keeps the kids moving along and on task in a firm but age-appropriate way, handling interruptions with kindness and care. She has invested in technology that allows all the students to easily see the books she is reading during read aloud, which makes such a difference to first grade students. Mrs. Child is a bright spot in my child's virtual experience and we are so grateful for all her hard work and thankful to have her as part of the Lemon Road community."

"I simply wanted to acknowledge the efforts of the Kings Glen School Staff for their abilities in connecting with my son and his classmates during this very different type of school year format, due to the COVID challenge.  Under the guidance of Mr. Samuel Elson and Dr. Christine Ritter, my son's teachers (Marissa Gaines, Jay Ann DiGrazia, Sarah Opsut, Michelle Keenan, Jennifer Downham and others) have directed and implemented a very complex system of technical applications which have allowed my son, and possibly his classmates, to thrive and fulfill their academic goals and aptitudes.  His teachers have all been very versatile and creative in tailoring the needs of the students to the 6th grade curriculum.  While all parents may not feel the same, the directed, channeled focus of the students' lesson plans has captured my son's attention and increased his classroom learning.  Thank you for all you do, and we as my son's parents, have been very grateful for this providential experience.  Continued Success to KGES and FCPS!"

Nicole Taragna, Rolling Valley ES

Ms. Taragna is my daughter's 3rd-grade general education teacher.  My daughter spends part of the school day in her classroom, and part of the day in a self-contained special education setting.  On Friday, October 23rd, the special education classes were all asynchronous for the day as teachers needed to prepare for cohorts entering the building next week. Asynchronous time is difficult for my daughter, so we instead chose to spend the full day in the general education classroom. Even with no notice, Ms. Taragna did not miss a beat! She fully included my daughter throughout the entire day, even during subjects where my daughter is typically in the special education classroom.

My daughter has complex communication needs, and often gets frustrated, usually for one of two reasons: 1. she either knows the material she's being presented and her communication needs make it difficult to express her knowledge or 2. She doesn't know or understand something, but feels like she should, so shuts down entirely. It never happened on Friday.

Despite being challenged with so much new information; despite having less frequent breaks; and even knowing she was not feeling well (ear pain) - she had an amazing day! She was fully engaged throughout the day, and was excited to participate in the same assignments as her general education peers.

Ms. Taragna took so many small steps that all added up to such a productive and positive experience:

1. She took the time to include my daughter in rotation assignments on slides before publishing them to the class.

2. She privately messaged us links to assignments that my daughter didn't have access to in Schoology.

3. She opened up private message options so we could talk through concerns and questions without having to make the entire class aware (which helps significantly with my daughter's anxiety, as she does not want to be seen as different).

4. She calls on my daughter for answers, and models every day being patient with my daughter using her AAC device to respond.  Even though it may mean "dead air" for longer periods of time than other students, she knows my daughter is working as fast as she can and gives her space to answer without rushing her.

I can't say enough how huge this is! My daughter ended the week with filling out Ms. Taragna's weekly check-in. For the past few weeks, my daughter has been telling her she is "sleepy" and "I want go to your class more. I want learn more. Please help me."  On October 23rd, after spending a full day with Ms. Taragna, she said she was "Happy" (rather than sleepy) and "I love your class. Thanks for including me!" The difference in my daughter at the end of a full day of general education - and being genuinely included - was tremendous. Thank you, Ms. Taragna!  We love you!

Colleen Lally, Justice HS

"Here's an excerpt of a typical effort from Ms. Lally.  She had stopped in and provided a very objective observation to include suggested growth points of mention.  Yet, what makes her such an effective leader is her uncanny ability to forge this critical push towards excellence with an on-going collegial empathy that says, "I care and especially about you." After providing the email of my observation, she offered a phone conversation as a better venue. I first responded via email that I'd try to do better and still felt miserable.  So, I eventually took her up on the offer and I'm glad I did. Here's the email outcome that I just forwarded to her: I meant what I said in you being there for "me" as a person today.  It has been very, very difficult to go from my perceived "swag", "autonomy", and "efficacy", to self-doubt, uncertainty and frustration that this distance-learning format has brought on.  I had no idea how very thinly veiled one can be as a person and hence, how easily a perception window can change. Your making yourself available with a phone invite, your ear in listening to me, and your encouraging words helped restore my entire day.  "Kevin, we're on the same team and even Jeter was coached despite his great attributes". Thanks a lot. Colleen thank you for demonstrating such a wonderful gift of "patience" in giving of your time with the million things you have on your plate to let me know that you care."

Stephanie Payne, Stratford Landing ES

"Ms. Stephanie Payne has been a wonderful influence on our students!  She has developed lessons in Language Arts that develops our students as writers and encourages them to attempt new ideas.  They just finished a PBL (Project-Based Learning) that focused on developing a resort on a different planet.  She encouraged the students to do their research from a scientific perspective while also giving them the creative outlet to consider what could be possible!  I love the opportunity they have had to imagine and consider what could be possible in their writing.  She also has given students the opportunity write a historical fiction piece.  She has encouraged them to consider a time in history and touch upon events that actually happened while giving them the creative license to develop a character that could have lived during that time and to consider what their life and experiences may have included.  She is clear with her assignments and expectations and also has given children a chance to play and be social in the virtual setting.  At morning meetings, she has taken a poll of their favorite songs to include the 10 minutes prior to school, she plays drawing games with them to get them started on a fun note, she asks students questions and then quizzes them the next day to see how well they are "getting to know" their classmates.  She is a teacher and a mother and she recognizes the challenges that students face this year and has worked hard to develop a sense of belonging even though the students are not physically together.  We are very fortunate to have her teaching expertise and her caring ways of reaching out to students in a fun way at Stratford Landing Elementary!"

Brooke Bertholet, Stratford Landing ES

"Mr. Bertholet has had a tremendously influential role on our 6th graders at Stratford Landing Elementary.  His gentle and courteous demeanor has been a living example of how to demonstrate civility with those around you.  He signs all of his emails to parents or students "with the kindest of regards" and genuinely shows gratitude in class towards the sharing of ideas among students.  He tailors his historical lessons to make them both educational experiences while also giving students the opportunity to see how a historical moment may have been experienced differently by many people at the time.  While teaching about the founding fathers, he encouraged students to think about what else was going on in the world during that time, and how it affected the decisions that led to the forming of our Constitution.  He also tied in lessons on what was going on with the Native Americans at the time and how their lives were being changed.  He takes thought provoking articles and emboldens the students to consider what the author was experiencing at the time.  Our students will look at science and social studies with greater sensibility from the thoughtfully prepared lessons Mr. Bertholet has developed.  We are very fortunate to have Mr. Bertholet at Stratford Landing."

Kayla Briggs, Fox Mill ES

"Kayla Briggs is not just a teacher she is a so much more! My son was lucky enough to have Ms. Briggs in first grade. It is an understatement to say learning to read was a bit frustrating for him. Ms. Briggs calm and cool attitude gave him the confidence to push on and overcome his fears and frustrations.  During second grade it was the highlight of my son’s day if he saw Ms. Briggs in the hallway or cafeteria. She always checked on his progress and made him feel special and supported. She is such a big part of the Fox Mill school community! She participates  in spirit events including dressing up, playing in basketball games, dine for dollars and so much more. Then life went virtual. My son felt lost without his community and school connections. In August we received “the call “ Ms. Briggs would be his teacher again in third grade.  If I am being honest, I began to cry, my worries reduced and my heart filled with joy for my son. When I told him he had Ms. Briggs again he said “Mommy, I can do virtual learning if I have Ms. Briggs because she really gets me!” Out of the mouth of an 8-year-old boy that’s about the best praise ever!  What a feeling to know your child feels understood even in a virtual environment. She started the year by visiting all her students with supplies and an outside 10 feet meet and greet. Ms. Briggs personal touches and commitment to her students makes her students feel so valued. She is connected to each of her kiddos even when she is on a screen! I can not praise Ms. Briggs and her commitment to overall student growth enough! Simply put she cares and it shows!"

"Erik goes above and beyond to provide a teach-and-train when describing potential solutions to problems. His actions help me understand how to support school stakeholders further, and in doing so, he is building my capacity as a TSSpec. I am most grateful for Erik’s facts and reasoning and how he describes the problem and solution. Erik, thank you for being my guide as I embrace this new journey as a TSSpec!"

- Carrie Pratt, Sprague Technology Center

Elise Fasick, Madison HS

"Elise is the administrator I partner with at work. She goes above and beyond every day. Specifically, she has gone out of her way to get school materials for those students who could not come to the school to pick them up. She has taken responsibility for packaging and mailing materials to  a student who is living in a hotel  at the moment as well as another student taking care of a grandparent sick with COVID out of state. These are just a few examples of her care and concern and commitment every day. She goes the extra mile all the time. The time span is all this first quarter."

- Cynthia Coogan, Madison HS

-------

Lauren Crispino, Willow Oaks

"Lauren has gone above and beyond to lend her support and expertise to our team with our application for the Recognized American School Counseling Model Program designation. She has given her time to review our application materials and provide valuable feedback, even on very tight deadlines she has somehow made it work!  Lauren has so many different responsibilities that she is balancing with her support of schools and counseling programs across the county and somehow she has been able to make herself available to help our team who is newer to this process every step of the step of the way and we are so grateful! Thank you Lauren!!!!"

Michelle Botelho, West Springfield HS

"Ms. Botelho has gone above and beyond for my son already this year.  She has worked hard to make sure he knows he has someone on his side at school to help him.  There was one day she had a learning seminar where she was working with him, fielding questions from the kids in the class and emailing me that all was going to be ok!  She is just awesome!  I just wanted to say thanks!"

Evelyn Mastakas, Franklin Sherman ES

"Mrs. Mastakas has the heart and the grit it takes to pull of this fall's super challenge of creating an engaging and productive virtual learning experience for her second graders. Thank you for your perseverance, Mrs Mastakas!"

Leslie Leisey, Poplar Tree ES

Leslie graciously gave up hours of her personal time to help the librarians of a high school develop a virtual breakout for their entire freshman class orientation to the library (through 21 classes!) Leslie has worked for years with her own students on the Poplar Tree Paw Tech Squad as well as with teachers on various grade levels to develop virtual breakouts. When the librarians asked if she had any resources to share, she immediately provided multiple resources (including sharing access to many of her own breakouts), additional contacts, and also offered to meet virtually if needed. She then spent over an hour in a virtual meeting, helping the librarians think through their breakout goals and puzzles, offering a wide range of resources, and teaching them how to use various technology components to accomplish puzzles and locks.  And when the librarians needed help refining during the final hours of the evening before the breakout, she jumped on the Google Site virtually to offer real-time support and solutions. Leslie is generous and giving of her time, and she is genuinely invested in working hard to provide the best experiences for FCPS students, even students who don't attend her school and whom she will never meet!

Transportation -Team 32 Bus Drivers and Attendants

"On Monday 10/19, Poplar Tree E.S. had a large student supply distribution event that was quite complex due to the various types of items that needed to be distributed to specific students. We were concerned that anyone assisting would be overwhelmed but those fears were quickly laid to rest as the team of 11 bus drivers and attendants arrived excited and enthusiastic to work. They paid close attention to the complicated directions and jumped right in when the first cars appeared. The cars were directed  with energy and professionalism. The interactions with families were friendly and thorough. The teams functioned as if they always work together and had done this before. We are so grateful for their help in making our event fun and successful."

Jenn Scott, Willow Oaks

"Jenn Scott has sent the IAS faculty a Monday morning email that promotes positivity, engagement, enthusiasm, and self-care--what a great way to begin the week.  Sometimes it's a quote, sometimes a suggested activity, sometimes a reflection, sometimes a video, regardless of the delivery method, the content is inspiring to us all.  In addition, she begins each meeting with a community builder often focusing on self-care, and she has been instrumental in helping us all maintain a healthy outlook and health boundaries.  Bravo Jenn!"

"The Custodial Team at Shrevewood Elementary deserve BIG kudos for showing how much they care!  They work tirelessly to make sure our school is a welcoming place to be each and every day. They have been preparing our classrooms for the eventual return of our students, which has been no easy task as the floors in our classrooms were retiled over the summer, and the walls in the classrooms are now being repainted. This would not have been possible without the hard work of our devoted Custodial Team. They strive for excellence in keeping our school in the cleanest and safest condition possible, and they succeed. I cannot thank this team enough for all they do to help make Shrevewood a great place to be!"

Kathleen Scarritt, Fairhill ES

Miss Scarritt has been a gem during this challenging time of virtual learning. When my daughter needs extra support she always has the patience and sweet words to keep her calm & motivated. When we were on the verge of a breakdown her email to our family calmed our spirits  "Know that nothing is more important than health and happiness right now!  Thank you for all you do to support her at home and know that I am always happy to support.  It is a lot to navigate.  I am so very proud of her every time I see her virtual hand up to ask for clarification.  She is learning to advocate for herself and I think that is the best possible skill a learner can have!  Please support her in knowing that I will always come back to guide her to where she needs to be.  If she misses something, we can get caught up at another time."I appreciate how she always goes above and beyond for us all.  Thank you Miss Scarritt and all our wonderful teachers.

Tan Phan, Woodson - IT

"Tan Phan has worked as our field service technician for the Rose Hill and Mount Eagle community for many years.  I have come to appreciate him in the last 6 years that I have been assigned to my 2 schools.  During the pandemic - it has been very challenging getting equipment fix from staff working from home.  Tan has been a great help with coordinating his schedule to service our equipment and get folks back to their instruction with minimal downtime. He has always been a great source of information for me and my troubleshooting needs, and has been a great asset to our schools.  Thank you Tan for your efficient and hard work.  I don't say it much, but I really appreciate what you do for us."

Maria Pike, Kent Gardens ES

"Mrs. Pike has consistently demonstrated such a high level of professionalism, but most importantly love for the children she teaches.  She made sure each child received a personalized postcard before school started and has continued to create opportunities to connect in this virtual world with her classroom and facilitates connections between the children.  She provides uplifting and encouraging messages while ensuring that every child has a solid math basis.  She is such a gifted teacher and should be recognized for her commitment to her kids."

Ariel Miller, Justice HS

"Ariel is an active member of our chemistry team. She does care for all our students. Our school has remediation program (den days) every week. In order to provide best learning experience to our struggling students, especially SPED kids, she printed the assignments on paper and went to Blue mail box drop off location at 7pm. She made sure all students get the mail before remediation day. Thanks Ariel for your dedication."

Ben Eisenberg, Gatehouse Administration

"While his department must be overwhelmed with requests and he is only two weeks into this new job, Ben Eisenberg made time for a phone call to provide clarity and guidance surrounding a highly nuanced process.  Mr. Eisenberg provided a thorough explanation of the process and answered a variety of questions which brought a better level of understanding to me, and will in turn provide better support for our faculty and staff.  Mr. Eisenberg's knowledge of a truly complicated system is, quite frankly, unmatched, and his manner of conveying this information to be readily applicable to scenarios in the building was refreshing.  We are fortunate to have a resource like Mr. Eisenberg here in FCPS."

Kelly Bunting, Riverside ES

"Kelly is doing an PHENOMENAL job in her first year as the team lead for our 2nd grade team. As the only returning member, Kelly has been intentional and committed to supporting her team in becoming a high functioning CLT. She meets with me, her administrator, weekly to problem solve and discuss different facilitation skills to practice. She models positivity and a solution based approach for her team members and is always there to support them when they need it. With our instructional coach being out on maternity leave, Kelly has taken on an additional role of lead facilitator during CLT meetings. It has been such a pleasure to watch her as she leads her team by working Region 3 support to identify clear outcomes for the team, posing questions, and paraphrasing her team members during meetings. I am so proud of her and am grateful to be apart of her journey as she develops her leadership skills. We are so lucky to have her apart of our Riverside family!"

She meets with me, her administrator, weekly to plan meaningful agendas with clear outcomes and to gain knowledge on how to improve in her facilitation skills. She has been intentional in supporting her team with having access to the resources that are necessary for them to thrive in this virtual learning experience. Even with this extra role on her plate, she has remained committed to doing whatever it takes to ensuring student success. I am so proud of her for how she has adapted to her new role. Cris continues to go above and beyond and we are so grateful to have her apart of our Riverside family."

Emily Tobin and Michelle McCoy, Deer Park ES

"Recently, the Deer Park community suffered a tragedy. We lost the mom of one of our students unexpectedly. Immediately, Emily and Michelle contacted the family to check on the student. They scheduled a time to visit him in person later that day. Emily and Michelle talked with the family to determine what supports they might need. They then set up a schedule for staff to make meals for the family. Additionally, they created a schedule for lunch bunch meetings with the student and other staff members. Their swift response, kind hearts and caring attitude helped this family feel loved, valued and supported during a terrible time."

Kara Strumsky, Flint Hill ES

"In early May, our kindergartener was really down and struggling with the distance learning format.  We reached out to Mrs. Strumsky to let her know it was our daughter struggling, and not a function of anything she and her aide were or weren't doing, that they were doing wonderfully.  Mrs. Strumsky took it upon herself to drive to our house that afternoon to sit outside on the sidewalk, socially distanced, with our daughter to cheer her up.  Will never forget it.  It was such a touching moment and it totally did the trick!"

Joshua Floyd, Glasgow MS

Katie Gilmore, White Oaks ES

"This year has been so hard on my active, distractible boy. Learning on a computer surrounded by his 2 younger siblings playing is so difficult. However, he is just SO lucky to have such an amazing teacher overseeing his education. She has the patience of a saint. My child has spent hours reading to her stories he has written and sharing things he has created on the computer and she has taken time outside of the school day to actively and excitingly listen and engage with him. She encourages him to continue writing and reading and has really helped him bloom into a child who is falling in love with learning. I truly believe these early years of learning are so key in setting our children up for educational success and we are so blessed to have such an incredible, gifted teacher in our son's life."

Ashley Elliot, Lake Braddock SS

"Ashley is amazing. She not only inspires her students with her passion for teaching, but she reaches another level by making it clear how much she CARES about her students. Earlier this week, I emailed several teachers about a student who had attended very few classes in the 6 weeks since school started. After a home visit, I was hopeful he would re-engage, and shared this with his teachers. Ashley was the first to respond.  She responded by saying, "Awesome!!  Is there a way for me to reach out to him? Is there a number where I can call him directly to welcome him back!?"  THAT is the kind of teacher we need in FCPS. What a privilege to work with her. If more teachers enter FCPS like Ashley, the future is bright."

Deb Brown, Lake Braddock SS

"Deb Brown is a master of data driven programming and how to run a RAMP certified ASCA model counseling program. This year, despite not being responsible for the RAMP process for our department, she has generously shared her expertise and her time to support our process for the department.  Her knowledge is remarkable, and her willingness to support her colleagues in so many ways is why I look to her often for her guidance and her never ending creative solutions."

"Sierra Alexander-Franks is a new counselor in our HS Student Services Department at LBSS. She is a breathe of fresh air. Sierra exudes a passion for helping kids, learning her craft, and being part of the team. Being a first year counselor is ALWAYS tough. Being a first year counselor in a virtual setting is beyond tough. And yet, Sierra is already an effective and frequent contributor to our team discussions, a supportive team member when volunteers are needed, and an energetic advocate for students. We are INCREDIBLY lucky to have this dynamo at Lake Braddock!!!"

Antonio DiBari, Lake Braddock SS

"Tony DiBari is a great example of leadership in action. As this year has progressed, administrators have been asked to shoulder tremendous responsibility and have been asked to remain positive in the face of tremendous adversity. Tony not only remains positive, but he takes the time to recognize the efforts of those around him on  regular basis. He is also the consummate "team player". Earlier in the year, he was one of the leads in a meeting that became contentious and went off track. Where I had SUCH respect for him is that he followed the meeting by reaching out to every member with humility about where it went awry, what he would do differently as a leader, and promising a better result in the future. He earned the respect of every team member that day, and has continued to do so with his work ethic and passion for helping kids. I'm lucky to work with him."

Angela Perez, Whitman MS

Perez!"

Ann Brownridge, Eagle View ES

Although he is no longer in her class he still sends emails to say hello and Mrs. Brownridge always responds with something to put a smile on his  ace. We could not have asked for a better teacher to enter his life last year. We are so grateful for the connection he feels to her!"

"This amazing trio has office hours two times a week to support all FCPS Kindergarten teams. They've worked countless hours putting together engaging lessons plans to make distance learning fun for our youngest learners. It's not unusual to receive an email from them late at night and on weekends with important information/updates for professional development, workshops that promote ways to make virtual lessons more engaging, etc. They are constantly adding new material/resources to our Kindergarten Currents and go above and beyond to advocate for developmentally appropriate practices for our students. Alicia is also giving us wonderful tech support. You ladies are phenomenal and we are so appreciative of all your hard work! Thanks for everything you do to help lighten our load. Tim Harazin, Sean Chitsaz, Michael Greene, Salima Hassouni,  Amie Jenkins, Forte Center, Laurel Hill ES , Sprague Technology Center

"I had heard about a microscope that would give a better viewing experience for my Kindergarteners to see our ant farm. Since they are not able to see them in person because of distance learning the viewing from a computer screen is limited at best. With the help of several people, Tim Harazin, Sean Chitsaz, Michael Greene, Amie Jenkins, and Salima Hassouni I was able to get a microscope camera for my class and the software that I didn't have was uploaded within the hour! Thanks so much for the collaborative effort of all these FCPS employees for going above and beyond to bring our ants up close and personal. Special thanks to Tim Harazin for setting up an amazing web cam for his ant farm and YouTube videos to share footage for those that may not have been able to get their ant farm going this year! Last but certainly not least, the tech support staff at our school is amazing! They are always quick to respond to any issues and offer wonderful tech support for students, parents and staff with their helpful video tutorials."

Gregory Moyers, Jorge Marmol, Ruben Bonilla, Larry Bolanos, and Gloria Glenn-Yates, Transportation - Stonecroft

"The HR Wellness team would like to recognize these team members in "Driving Force Behind Education" for their assistance in the drive-thru flu clinic held at Stonecroft. Over 80 flu shots were provided to transportation employees in just over two hours. With only one nurse providing the shots, our line was growing as the clinic progressed. These wonderfully multi-talented individuals were able to assess the situation and provide an alternative route for drivers arriving so that we did not block traffic on Stonecroft Blvd. With their guidance and quick thinking we were able to handle the large turnout and even entertain those waiting to receive their vaccine. It was my pleasure to work with my transportation family for this event and I am truly grateful for their grace and professionalism. Thank you for all you do!!!"

Mark Lenker, Leteberhan Tesfemichael, James Swider, and Joon, Transportation - Lorton

"The HR Wellness team would like to recognize these professional and friendly transportation employees for their assistance with our Gatehouse drive-thru flu clinic. After a brief explanation of how the clinic would operate, these individuals were able to provide the appropriate guidance for those entering the parking garage which led to the great success of our all day event.  Participants throughout the day commented on how well organized and simple it was to maneuver through the parking garage, up to P1 to receive their vaccine, and then back out again to be on their merry way from the expert direction of these individuals that I like to call "family." Our "Driving Force Behind Education" is always up to any task as we have seen throughout this health crisis and for this, our team is truly grateful. Thank you for all you do!!"

She even came to my rescue when I was being called lewd and sadistic names by some of my peers in the hallway. She deserves a raise and we need more people like her."

She is selfless in her dedication to her students while also taking care of her own family. It is difficult with virtual learning, but it puts me at ease to know that I do not have to  constantly monitor him."

It is my second year on the job and admittedly I am sometimes a little lost. But Flor is always there for me, helping me with resources, coming up with great ways to engage students, and anticipating needs before even I know I need them. And whenever I need help with teaching something, she helps enthusiastically, and without judgement. For example, I am going to have to teach addition with regrouping for the first time. I was able to go to Flor and she taught me how to do this! Even more, she did it happily. She takes on more work than she has to because she loves the students. I am very lucky to have her as a team member, and the students are lucky to have her as an IA. She is simply outstanding and the definition of a CARES teacher."

Jennafer Koonce Hoff, Ravensworth ES

Mrs. Hoff has gone above and beyond to help support our family in this virtual learning environment that has been challenging for our kindergartner. She has spent a lot of time creating an engaging curriculum and adapting as needed to support our child and her students. Mrs. Hoff has provided us with recommendations that our family can do at home to support our child's learning. We cannot thank her enough for all her hard work and support.

Cory Walker, Lake Braddock SS

"All teachers have been working hard to navigate this new virtual world, but Mr. Walker has been extra impressive with his organization, enthusiasm, patience, and time to make connections with students.   I can tell that he has gone out of his way to understand the ins-and-outs of google classrooms and how to use it effectively to help his students stay organized and be successful.  His materials are always so creative and entertaining.  He even changes his mouse cursor regularly, which the kids get a kick out of (i.e. bacon & eggs).  As a first time middle school parent, I want to give an extra THANK YOU!  #BruinsCARE"

Kaila Wise, Riverside ES

"Kaila has just started her first year as an AP at Riverside and she has certainly hit the ground running.  She asks all the right questions, seeks out the answers she needs from multiple internal/external resources, carries an intense work ethic, and exudes positivity along the way.  Kaila takes initiative at every turn and is clearly a learner who wants to excel in her new role.  It is obvious that she will continue to grow and flourish in this leadership role amidst all of the challenges we are facing right now.  Keep up the great work Kaila!  You are doing a phenomenal job!"

Karen Couch, Riverside ES

"Karen Couch joined our team last year and continues to go above and beyond to support our culture of collaboration.  Her ideas have already transpired into well-laid plans that have drastically improved our literacy instruction. Karen's impact on our school structures for support, data collection, and analysis, have led to a wider understanding of instructional implications for our staff and we have only just begun.  She takes initiative, leads PD, finds entry points to support teachers in the classroom and always makes an effort to influence decision-making school-wide that will lead to success for all students and staff.  We are so grateful to have her on our team!"

Rosalind Ali, Riverside ES

"Roz has been such an amazing addition to our coaching team when we hired her a few years ago and she continues to shine as a leader at Riverside.  During what is a very stressful time for us all, Roz shows patience, flexibility, and optimism.  She adapts to provide the targeted support that our teachers need in the most nurturing and supportive manner possible.  She meets teachers exactly where they need to be met and she walks the walk with them to support the instructional delivery.  Roz spends her time in planning sessions and in classrooms doing all she can to help our teachers feel successful.  She supports our teachers by building confidence and a skillset that allows them to meet the needs of a very diverse group of students and we all appreciate her tremendously.  Thank you Roz!"

Kayla Lee, Riverside ES

"Kayla has been an instructional coach with us for over a year now and her impact has been nothing short of astounding. She is incredibly smart and carries an intense work ethic to support our instructional goals at Riverside.  This past week Kayla went out on maternity leave and we are so happy for her.  I want to give her a shout out because of the thorough preparations she put into place to make the transition a seamless one.  She has been working since August on her plan and has collaborated with me and with her colleagues every step of the way to make sure our staff was supported. Kayla thought of a plan A and a plan B to ensure that all of her professional responsibilities would be met and that we were left in the best position to succeed during a very difficult time.  We want to thank her for her diligence and genuine care and we know that her ongoing leadership will continue to make our school great.  Rest up Kayla and know that we appreciate you!"

Maggie Stem and Sofia Scanlan, Ravensworth ES

"I wanted to take a moment to recognize Maggie Stem and Sophia Scanlan for the great job they are doing working with fifth graders at Ravensworth. A fitting recent example is that my daughter was expressing a lot of frustration and was saying that she was very stressed by virtual learning and both teachers were very supportive of her concerns and took the time to talk to her. Ms. Stem also went above and beyond by immediately asking my daughter if she would like to have a lunch bunch the very next day and said she could invite some friends to join her. This was a very welcome development and it allowed my daughter to happily reconnect with two friends whom she was sad were no longer in her class. Ms. Stem also made it a point to tell my daughter that she would check in on her and meet with her regularly to see how things were going. Ms. Stem and Ms. Scanlan have worked hard to create a caring environment in their classroom and this has gone a long way I think toward helping the children to adjust to a virtual learning environment. I am pleased to recognize both teachers for the positive learning environment they are striving to create. Thanks."

Susan Schumacher, Westfield HS

"It is without hesitation that I nominate Susan Schumacher as an FCPS employee who cares!   Susan is an Administrative Assistant in 1 of our 5 sub school offices who has proven to be both attentive and knowledgeable to the students and staff in our building. From the first day I began working in the main office at Westfield HS, she provided me with beneficial insight regarding the best practices to help me understand the daily operations of our sub school offices. As our working relationship has evolved, she has become my ‘go to’ person anytime a new procedure is introduced to the office support staff which could adversely affect the daily operations of their offices.  While she is a rule follower, she is consciously aware of how decisions affect our staff, students, and parents.
Susan is always willing to help and provides an insightful perspective in even the most challenging situations!  She is the first one to volunteer to work through a new task, adjust her work schedule to cover an after-school event, or cover for one of her colleagues when we are short staffed.   Susan prides herself in being proactive and is well-respected by her peers, teachers, students and parents. Her work is exemplary and I’m grateful she is on our team!"

Erin Smith, Hayfield ES

"Mrs. Smith has been such a blessing to our family since our oldest son started kindergarten. He was diagnosed with ADHD the summer before school and Mrs. Smith was instrumental in helping set up a caring supportive environment for him to be successful. We have moved to an IEP and although she is no longer his case manager she is always on his “team”. This year our son, now in 4th grade, is struggling in the virtual environment and at home. We are having a hard time finding appropriate therapy for him and reached out to Mrs. Smith ask for resources. Not only did she give us resources she made time to meet with him weekly to help support him. She has always gone above and beyond for him and we cannot adequately express how thankful we are for her. Our son thinks the world of her and she makes him feel cared for. Erin Smith deserves recognition and thanks for all she does for her students because she truly is a blessing to them and their families!"

Eileen Bell, West Potomac HS

"Eileen Bell is our tireless ESOL department chair.  In addition to her awesome and endless duties as chair, she routinely goes above and beyond.  She is not only bilingual in English and Spanish, no small feat of it's own, she utilizes her Spanish-speaking skill for students who are in her department and any and all who may not be.  Eileen, even with a full teaching load, went above and beyond last week by conducting a home visit to an extremely disconnected family.  She seamlessly provided information and made three FCPS students in different schools and their mother feel very welcome and informed.  We need more bilingual and dedicated professionals like Eileen; she embodies the bridge to equity that we so seek."

Andrew Saffron, Woodson HS

"Mr Saffron went above and beyond supporting my child in his Digital Art2vclass.   Art can be hard to translate in virtual learning.   My child was struggling with how to stay motivated and share work in progress.   I reached out to Mr Saffron, and he listened, shared his own story a bit on art and he offered alternative timing and process that allowed my child to feel supported, accepted and safe to reach out for help. This teacher embodies caring for students and the experience offers me hope that through COVID, our kids can learn in different ways and perhaps make relationships more deeply with teachers online than expected. Thank you Mr Saffron."

Mashel Hazel, Hayfield SS

"Despite our current operating status Ms. Hazel, a longtime member of our Hayfield custodial team, is dedicated to making sure our school is a beautiful and carefully maintained campus. Throughout these early months of the school year, when only a small percentage of staff and even smaller number of visitors are coming to our building, she can be seen each morning meticulously caring for the entrances, sidewalks, and other areas of the school. The fact that she is putting forth the same effort when she knows not that many people are there to notice speaks to work ethic as well as her dedication to the school. Mr. Mercer, a Hayfield social studies teacher, was quoted as saying "I am honored to work with her and her commitment and attention to detail. No students or staff here, and yet she is still focused on the little things!" Thank you, Ms. Hazel, for being such a valuable Hawk."

It is not easy transitioning to a new school even with years of teaching experience. There is typically a lot to learn but at this time, there is a little extra! I cannot imagine having Lichele's position under normal circumstances, let alone now, but she makes it look easy! She has started a Technology Cohort for us so that we may get extra practice and learn helpful tips. Lichele always makes herself available to help us when we are struggling or if we just have a questions. She is patient, kind, understanding and very knowledgeable! April Taylor, Gatehouse Administration

"As we are working through our Return to School process we have had to lean on many central office staff.  We were fortunate enough to receive some of this help from April Taylor.  Ms. Taylor spent over an hour with our team as we walked through both general and specific staffing questions with the patience of a saint.  She made sure that all of our questions were answered, helped us move on to our next steps, and established a follow-up procedure to make sure we are on top of everything.  A good part of this was done past what I imagine Ms. Taylor's contracted hours are but we never felt hurried or that we were in any way inconveniencing her.  To the contrary, while it is certain that she had a significant amount of work to get back to, Ms. Taylor gave us undivided attention and brought calm and clarity to what could be an otherwise stressful and chaotic process.  We are truly lucky to have Ms. Taylor as a resource."

Emily Angle, Freedom Hill ES

"I've worked with Emily, our math resource teacher, for three years now at Freedom Hill. Emily has taught me so much and has supported my growth as a critical thinking math teacher. She has supported my transition to math workshop and celebrates the progress my students and I make throughout the year. Emily introduced me to Number Talks several years ago and has supported my growth as a teacher who unpacks a unit with my students at the center.  With Emily's support I have been able to give my students a more independent and challenging learning experience. Working with Emily has made me more comfortable with taking risks and inviting feedback.  She is always willing to attend my class and takes the time to compliment my teaching as well as my students' skills as they work to become great workshop partners in mathematics. Without fail, if I ask Emily to plan, she is there for me! This has been so important to me as I teach a different math level in my grade.  While she is our math go-to, Emily has also lent her support as a friend which just makes her that much more amazing! "Ms. Frazier has my son in her class for the second year in a row. We were both very excited to see her on his schedule again this year because she has proven herself time and time again to care more about the individual student than just the subject that she teaches. In this virtual learning environment, it is even more difficult to stay connected to the students at that level but she has gone above and beyond to communicate with me and my son, understanding we are in a difficult family transition. My son trusts and respects her, as well as values her feedback to help him grow as a college bound student and as a human being. I reached out to Mr. Walton to gain clarification surrounding the protocols for teachers returning to the building as we prepare to welcome some of our students back.  To begin with, he was incredibly quick with his response and allowed me to call as opposed to simply going back and forth over e-mail. During our call he took his time to provide in-depth explanations for all of my questions and made sure to follow up to ensure clarity on my part.  Mr. Walton was incredibly good-natured and patient as we walked through the process.  While in the midst of what I can imagine is an insurmountable workload at this time, Mr. Walton took 20 minutes out of his day and made me feel like I was the only focus of his afternoon.  FCPS is extremely lucky to have somebody like Mr. Walton supporting their staff.

He was so thrilled to get to talk to her one on one.  Since then, she manages all the online time very well with timers and fun activities, like drawing, to keep the kids engaged.  She is very supportive and gives the kids time to share with the whole class.  My son says, 'I have the best teacher in the whole galaxy!'"

"Online Learning is hard. Teachers have to put in a much great effort to connect with kids in their classes. Today Ms. Marteeny took the time to connect with students after class to learn about an online game they like to play. She took time out of her day to listen to these kids talk about a game they like to play, and make them feel seen. It was a remarkable experience for my son, who feels like Ms. Marteeny really cares about him. I know that this will help him feel more motivated to learn French, and feel more motivated to participate in class. It is amazing what just a few extra minutes can do to build a relationship. They were received with huge adoration. Return message from a student - "I got your card in the mail today, it really made my whole week. I hope you and your family are doing well, and I want to say thank you for the advice, for being not only the best teacher, but one of my best friends". We are so appreciative of Ms. Muir's continued diligence in building relationships with her students."

Mashel Hazel, Hayfield SS

"Ms. Hazel is truly dedicated. She is a member of our custodial staff at Hayfield. She takes great pride in her work. Almost every morning, she is outside, sweeping the parking lot, pruning the bushes and smaller trees, and using a trowel to weed between the cracks of the sidewalk, and the edging the medians. Even this year, when we have only a few people at our school everyday, Ms. Hazel is still giving Hayfield her best, ensuring that our outside optics are detailed and organized. On top of that, she is very personable, and welcomes every one she sees!"

Kristy Carballo, Robinson SS

Kathleen Gannon Tye, Nontradtional Career Readiness Academy - Falls Church HS

"Kathleen Gannon Tye is a true example of flexibility and tenacity when comes to working with students. She pursues students with fidelity and meets them where they are. Our program has the flexibility to be responsive to the needs of our students, and Kathleen uses that privilege to the benefit of her classes. She has recommended students for interventions, working out individualized schedules, so each student has the attention and support they require to learn. She gets to know the students quickly and demonstrates a vulnerability and willingness to change course that creates an environment of trust in her classes and scaffolds student confidence. I am new to IAS, and I have made multiple scheduling errors and pursued the wrong lines of communication at times. Kathleen is one of the first teachers I've interacted with, and I've been met with nothing short of grace and encouragement. She is the type of teacher you want to work hard for because you know how hard she is working for her students. I can't emphasize enough how much I have appreciated working closely with her this past month. I learn from every conversation we have, and I'm looking forward to our continued work together this year."

Mr. Probst is doing an incredible job of navigating the virtual learning environment.  I particularly appreciate Mr. Probst's work in creating a nurturing learning space for the students, where they are building trust with their classroom community.  My daughter can be somewhat shy, but she has been all excitement about class from the get-go this year. In October, Anne assisted a non-English-speaking family to find a home after they were threatened with eviction, helped them move, and even provided pizza on the day of the move! She is a caring, creative School Counselor who is very deserving of recognition."

Jonathan Kettler, Woodburn ES

"Schools in FCPS strive to know each student by name and need. One unexpected place that I have seen this goal accomplished and surpassed in the most incredible way is art class at Woodburn School by one of their amazing art teachers, Jonathan Kettler. Art projects and activities can be challenging for my son, a current second grader, for various reasons. In first grade, Mr. Kettler was very proactive in making sure that my son had extra support in art class so that he could feel successful working on the projects in class. As a result of Mr. Kettler’s attention to the needs of each of his students, my son looked forward to art class! Mr. Kettler has continued to be very in tune with the needs of his students in the virtual setting this year and I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to see Mr. Kettler in action during virtual art class. He makes sure to get all of the students involved and recognize the efforts that they are making in working on their creative endeavors and art projects. Mr. Kettler is very encouraging of their work and his students are so proud to share their work with him! He recognizes that he can have more of an impact on them than just being their art teacher—he helps them see that they have value as people and as members of the Woodburn School community. I know my son will look back years from now and remember Mr. Kettler as the art teacher who helped him to be brave and find joy in being creative. Thank you Mr. Kettler for all that you do for the students of Woodburn!"

Although he cries a lot about school, he is almost always excited to have time with her and to share his thoughts and feelings. Without her support we would have given up already."

Deanne Lyon, Willow Oaks

"Deanne Lyon is our Curriculum Resource Teacher at Interagency Schools. She is our leader for Edmentum. She has assisted me many times in the past either in person, via telephone and video chat. She is patient and wants to make sure you understand the information. She had recently spent several hours tutoring a student of ours in Edmentum. When she heard that she had no school supplies, she drove down to our center and hand delivered a bag of school supplies to the student. The student was so happy that she can use these for her next school. We LOVE you Deanne. You have a LOVING heart."

Katie Crewse, Kings Park ES

"This acknowledgement is long overdue. Ms. Crewse was my daughter's preschool teacher the last two years. Her passion, creativity, and excitement on a day to day basis kept my little girl motivated and excited to learn. Ms. Crewse always found ways to keep my daughter engaged even if she did her little stomp, pout, and "leave me alone" yell. The one thing that always brought my daughter back to the classroom was a hug from Ms. Crewse. I am not sure as a parent of a special needs daughter if we could have asked for a better teacher than Ms. Crewse. We miss her dearly this year and know that she truly has a gift to teach. Thank you for being such a positive influence in our daughter's life."

Rania Saliba, Franklin Sherman ES

"Ms. Saliba has made a very positive and discernible impact in my son's life even in the very short time we have been with her. She has helped my son in his transition from out of State (we are new to FCPS, and to VA) during this remote learning period by constantly supporting both him and me, with strategies and interventions during his school day; She also went above and beyond by making sure the remote learning situation did not impede him developing a therapeutic rapport with her; As an example, she set up meetings with him in open fields (socially distant and with masks) to get to observe him and have him connect with her; immediately after that meeting my son's responsiveness to her remote instructions, and his attention, improved, and we also saw an impact on how he communicated with us outside of school; She also made herself available to me any time of the day by phone calls and emails; And her advice was always very useful; Ms. Saliba is a wonderful and talented Special education teacher who gives her all to her students and clearly knows how to maximize their strength and work on improving their weaknesses. I do not think we would have had a successful remote learning experience, for a child on the Autism spectrum, with attention issues AND who has joined from another school, if it wasn't for Ms. Saliba! It was very impressive when I heard the same impression from other parents who have kids with special needs, who were lucky to have had Ms. Saliba as their teacher; She is a rare breed and such an asset for the Franklin Sherman school!"

Cassandra Deedy, Edison HS

"I have had the pleasure of working with Cassandra for the last several years to support our LBSS students as they explore academy courses at Edison. Every year I have worked with Cassandra, she has done everything she can to "make it work" so students can get exposure to real world courses, and to possibly find the passion that keeps them in school and takes them further to a career and a bright future. Despite being virtual this year, Cassandra has been no less committed to finding opportunities for our kids. She has worked magic, has been flexible, and truly understands that these classes are what give many kids an element of hope. Sometimes our "plan" doesn't work out, but I never see her stop trying. Mr. Bunaugh is someone I turn to for help in many areas such as classroom management ideas/data collection, computer help, a laugh and for a reality check that I need throughout the year.  He is real, knowledgeable and forthcoming. His motto about being a Shepherd and not a sheep makes me a bit out of my comfort zone, but is what I need sometimes.  Even virtually he is looking out for faculty, staff and students by recommending wellness tips, cyber safety recommendations and technical support even "after" hours.  Thank you for all you do!"

Stephen Firebaugh, Kent Gardens ES

"My family is new to Kent Gardens this year and my husband and I were nervous about my daughter starting a new school virtually. We were not sure if she would be able to engage in a class with kids and teachers she did not know. She was feeling very down for weeks leading up to the first day of school. It was difficult learning virtually from the past Spring with classmates she had known for year, we couldn’t imagine how it would be at a new school, not knowing anyone. Our expectations for this school year were very low. However, I was proven wrong from the very first day. My daughter’s home room teacher, Mr. Firebaugh instantly drew our attention the moment he started his class. He was very upbeat and his positive energy and sincerity radiated through the computer screen. For the first week, he spent a lot of time getting to know each student. I could tell he wasn’t just going through the motions of asking questions, but he was sincere and made efforts to really engage and took his time getting to know each student. I was blown away by his efforts with making each student feel important. His instructions and way of teaching are always very clear and he will repeat them over and over until every student is on board and caught up. My daughter has always been hesitant to ask questions in class, fearful she would get in trouble for not knowing. However, we hear Mr. Firebaugh ask at the end of every lesson, “any questions?” about 5 times before he moves onto the next lesson. He makes students feel unafraid to ask questions. He is nurturing a safe and fun environment, which is the best way for any student to learn. He engages with every student and makes sure each student is reaching their goals and on target with their assignments. Mr. Firebaugh has a genuine love for kids and he is not only the best teacher my daughter has ever had, but the best teacher my husband and I have ever had! We both wish we had Mr. Firebaugh as our teacher growing up. I remind my daughter how lucky she is to have a teacher that cares for her and is so supportive. We don’t know how he does it, he is calm and collective at times when most adults would panic, whether it’s technical issues or kids not following directions, we have never seen Mr. Firebaugh react in frustration or anger. I have rarely met a teacher who I truly believe are destined to teach. And we are so blessed to have the opportunity to have Mr. Firebaugh be that teacher for our daughter. To say Mr. Firebaugh is the best teacher is an understatement. His patience, attention to detail, efforts to connect with each student, enthusiasm, and perseverance teaching each day with the same care as the day before is beyond our comprehension. My family is grateful for Mr. Firebaugh. He has made such a big impact on my daughter’s 4th grade year as a new student and I know she will remember and carry this important experience forever.  She enjoys his read aloud time very much, his sincerity and passion for teaching radiates despite the limited capabilities teachers have to engage virtually. EVERY student deserves a Mr. Firebaugh, we are so fortunate to have crossed paths with him."

Kevin Gentner, Glasgow MS

"Mr Gentner was an absolute gem when we had to take two of the laptops in for service due to audio not working. It was the day for materials pick up, and although we had made an appointment at 5pm and arrived at 4:40, we found that the line was insanely long. I texted him to make another appointment time for the computers, but instead he walked outside to pick up the computers (all of us masked) and worked on them while I was in line. When we finally got to the front of the line at 5:32pm, he was done replacing one computer and updating the drivers on the other. It was a frustrating day for us to have to wait that much past our appointment time to pick up a workbook, but his sympathy for us and above-and-beyond effort made it more bearable. He was amazing and must be commended! Thank you!"
