The Constitution of Virginia empowers the Virginia Board of Education with the general supervision of the public school system. This includes responsibility for (subject to General Assembly approval) the major regulations governing public education in Virginia, such as the Standards of Quality, the Standards Accreditation, the Standards of Learning accountability program, and teacher licensure regulations.
The Virginia Board of Education typically meets ten times a year (every month except August and December).

The Fairfax County School Board requested public feedback during the W.T. Woodson High School Renaming process. During the second phase, feedback was requested on proposed names for the school.
Under the plan, compensatory education may be provided to students with disabilities whose learning was impacted during the pandemic. The plan includes students with the regular or special education and related aids/services required by Section 504 plans or individualized education programs.
