About the Program

Fairfax County Public Schools is thrilled to announce its financial support for 100 FCPS employees with bachelor’s degrees who do not hold a Virginia teaching license to become fully licensed teachers within 12-24 months through the iteach program as members of the Teach Forward (¡Avanza!) FCPS cohort. 

(Teach Forward) ¡Avanza! FCPS cohort is a program for current FCPS employees and community members who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher but have never held a Virginia teaching license. Accepted participants will become provisionally licensed teachers for the 2025-2026 school year upon completing the initial iteach program requirements.

iteach is a non-college program accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation focused on offering aspiring potential educators an accessible and affordable opportunity to earn their teaching certification in Virginia.

(Teach Forward) ¡Avanza! FCPS cohort is a program for current FCPS employees and community members who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher but have never held a Virginia teaching license. Accepted participants will become provisionally licensed teachers for the 2025-2026 school year upon completing the initial iteach program requirements. 

Within 12-24 months, they will earn their teaching certification in one of the designated endorsements and commit to teaching in FCPS for at least two full school years after receiving their 10-year renewable teaching license. Participants are only responsible for the $250 iteach enrollment fee and the costs of the required Praxis tests. The full iteach program cost of $2800 will be funded by FCPS.

Any FCPS employee who:

  • Holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university that is recognized by the Virginia Department of Education, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher (or minimum 2.5 GPA in the last 60 hours in undergrad classes).
  • Is committed to completing the program and serving as a teacher in FCPS for two years following the completion of the program.
  • Does not currently hold a teaching license (provisional or professional).

Anyone applying with a transcript from a college or university outside of the United States must also complete an English proficiency exam, which will be provided and funded by FCPS. 

International Coursework/Degrees - Individuals who are seeking an educator license and who attended a college/university or earned a degree outside of the United States need to obtain an evaluation of their credentials. Applicants can request an evaluation from a member organization of one of the two national associations of credential evaluation services.

  1. National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is an association of 19 credential evaluation services with admission standards and an enforced code of good practice.
  2. Association of International Credentials Evaluators (AICE) is an association of 10 credential evaluation services with a board of advisors and an enforced code of ethics.

Once accepted, you will be asked to complete the following steps:

  • Formally enroll with iteach within two weeks of acceptance into the program.
  • Complete all iteach program requirements in 12-24 months.
  • Commit to teaching with FCPS in the area of endorsement for two years after receipt of provisional license. Year 1 begins July 1 of the first full year of contracted teaching.
  • Complete all required courses and assessments within 90 days of enrollment to obtain a provisional license from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

Once accepted into the program, you will need to pay the $250 enrollment fee, the rest of the program (approximately $2800) will be paid for by FCPS. 

You will also need to pay to take the Praxis exam(s).
