Coaches Education
Information for coaches about requirements, course dates, reimbursement, and more!
Virginia High School League (VHSL) Coaches in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) are required to complete the following components of coaches education training prior to the start of their second year of their first season (3DI Fundamentals, VHSL State Component, FCPS Coaches Orientation and FCPS Sports First Aid (online and in person).
Concussion Education, Mental Health Awareness and Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR &R) for coaches must be completed prior to the start of your first season. Concussion Education is an annual requirement.
Required Components:
All coaches must complete the NFHS Concussion in Sports Education course and present the completion certificate to activities office staff PRIOR to their first day coaching (VHSL Rule-2010; Virginia Student-Athlete Protection Act - SB652).
REMEMBER:
The NFHS Concussion in Sports Education course MUST be completed EACH SCHOOL YEAR (On or after May 1st and before the first day of coaching).

Complete before season starts
SR&R for coaches must be complete annually prior to the start of your upcoming season. Please use the link below to completed the training. The link will take you to MyPDE where you will need to use your FCPS credentials for log in. Completion of the course will be tracked by the central office and added to the coaches education database.
The orientation class is offered at the beginning of each season to cover policies and procedures specific to FCPS. This course should be completed PRIOR to their first day coaching.

** The American Sport Education Program (ASEP)/American Red Cross Sports First Aid online course will NOT be accepted.
** The National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Sports First Aid online course will NOT be accepted. You must complete the FCPS Sports First Aid course**
To access the FCPS Sports First Aid course you must:
- Be added to the local school coach education database by the Activities Office at your school
- Possess your FCPS network credentials (username and password).
There are TWO components to Sports First Aid:
1.) Accessing FCPS online Sports First Aid
- Register for First Aid, CPR and AED Training using your FCPS credentials
or
- Login to MyPDE using your FCPS credentials
- Search for: First Aid, CPR and AED Training
The online portion must be completed first; once completed, you can register for an in-person session. You will NOT be able to complete the online course without your FCPS credentials!
2.) Registering for in-person Sports First Aid
- Register for Coaches' Education Sports First Aid using your FCPS credentials
or
- Login to MyPDE using your FCPS credentials
- Search for: Coaches' Education Sports First Aid
The in-person component includes a review of important skills and CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Please remember that BOTH portions (online AND in-person) MUST be completed before you will receive credit for Sports First Aid.
Courses: Sports First Aid
- Online portion must be taken prior to taking the classroom portion.
- Please plan ahead, these courses will fill and all have a limited capacity. If the courses scheduled do not appear when you attempt to register, they are currently at maximum capacity.
- Wear comfortable clothes, active participation is required for CPR training and testing.
- Due to limited enrollment, You must be registered for the class (on the date) that you attend which will be confirmed by a reminder email a few days before the class.
- DO NOT attend the course in hopes that you can fill a no-show spot, you will not be permitted to attend the class unless you are registered or have email/voice confirmation from the Central Student Activities and Athletic Programs office. This applies to the SPORTS FIRST AID On-Site class only.

Sport Specific Requirements (Cheerleading and Pole Vault)
Cheerleading Coaches must complete the USA Cheer Safety Component
Pole Vault Coaches must complete the NFHS Pole Vault Safety Course
Reimbursement for Coaches
Coaches are eligible for reimbursement of a portion of the fee required to complete the online NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching course. Upon completion of ALL components:
- Orientation/FCPS Local
- 3DI Coaching
- VHSL State Component
- FCPS Sports First Aid online and classroom
- Mental Health Awareness training
- Concussion Education
- SR& R for coaches
The reimbursement available is $29 for 3DI Coaching. Complete the reimbursement form and submit it as a word or pdf document to the Office of Student Activities & Athletics at the following address:

You MUST submit a copy of the transaction receipt (website receipt, credit card statement showing the transaction, etc.), along with your completed reimbursement form, to receive your reimbursement.

Please send the course reimbursement form, copy of certificate of completion and a copy of the transaction receipt to the Office of Student Activities and Athletics. Please send by email to [email protected] (Please retain original copies for your records).
Reimbursements will be processed approximately once a month. Requests received after the first week will be processed the following month. A direct deposit will be issued 6-8 weeks upon receipt of your request and verification of your test results.
