Understanding ASVAB Scores
Learn how to understand the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score generated from your ASVAB test.
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a free test that helps identify areas of strength and match students' skills to potential careers. The ASVAB test can be used to serve several purposes.
High schools in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provide students access to this test as part of a career exploration program. After the test, students receive a customized score report and join a session explaining how scores can help identify potential career areas of strength.
The ASVAB is approved by the Virginia Board of Education as an option to fulfill industry credentialing graduation requirements. Students using this industry credential must be part of a JROTC program. The ASVAB qualifying score needed for credential is determined by the military branch (revised May 17, 2023):
The ASVAB test can also be used for students seeking enlistment in the military. These students may join a test session scheduled at their school or may test at their military recruiter's office. The ASVAB score required to enlist in the military varies by branch, as do the qualifying scores for specific military career paths within each branch.
Under Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework, adopted in September 2024, students' performance on the ASVAB test can benefit their high schools' state accountability outcomes. Within the state's "3E Ready for Life" Framework, students scoring 31-49 on the ASVAB earn 0.5 points for the high school; students scoring 50-64 on the ASVAB earn 0.75 points; and students scoring 65 or higher on the ASVAB earn 1.0 points for their high school. For this accountability measure, each student counts just once, during their final year of high school. If the student tested multiple times, the high score is used.
High schools have the responsibility to notify families about the opportunity to take ASVAB tests, and parents/guardians must opt in before their student may participate. The FCPS notification of testing and opt-in form can be accessed below with printable PDFs, including translations.
For 2024-25, parents/guardians must return a printed and signed (wet signature) participation opt-in form if they wish to allow their student to take the ASVAB test.

ASVAB PARTICIPATION OPT-IN FORM
Please only complete and return this portion of the form if you wish your student to participate in the ASVAB test.
I understand that the ASVAB is a career assessment tool that may help students identify career areas that best suit their skills. Further, I understand that participation in the ASVAB is voluntary and that the Military Entrance Processing Command provides the test. I acknowledge that while these services will occur at school, they are not a part of the school curriculum. I understand that my student’s participation in these services is entirely voluntary and that I can withdraw this consent at any time.
I give permission for my student to participate in the ASVAB.
