Central Office
Blanca Maldonado, Gatehouse Admin Center
"Blanca is without a doubt, a phenomenal human being and asset to FCPS. Winter break and Covid have made OSS dispatch busier than ever, and with the rise of technologies that have a Damocles Sword to them, Blanca has worked through them, to discern fact from fiction. She has single-handedly used CCTV and other abilities, to make FCPS safer and far more effective."

Mclu Buah, Cedar Lane School - view the celebration!
"As I am sitting here typing this email, Ms. Mclu is outside in bitterly cold weather breaking up the ice in front of my trailer and putting down salt. She then went on to clear the ice and snow and lay salt in front of the other trailers and, the pathway to the middle entrance door nearest the main office. The custodial staff, most especially Ms. Mclu, have put forth a Herculean effort to keep the school safe and free of the wintery conditions during the days we have been in the building. I appreciate their efforts, past and present, to keep this campus safe and clean."

Kim Marin, Glasgow MS - view the celebration!
"As a first year teacher Kim Marin is an incredible asset to the Glasgow community. She has created a trusting and safe space inside her classroom walls. Many of the students come to her "just to talk". During lunch duty yesterday, one of her students told me "Ms. Marin is pretty cool. She really listens to me." She fosters strong connections just by simply listening to the diverse and remarkable stories our students bring to our school community. Over the winter break Kim organized a drive at her local church to provide food and gift cards for over 100 families at Glasgow. Her room is a popular "check in" spot for many of our students before the morning bell. Everyday brings on a new challenge, but Kim models for her students and colleagues that relationships, trust, and willingness to listen come first. We are incredibly lucky to have her at Glasgow."

Marye Carter, Riverside ES (pictured) - view the celebration!
"Ms. Carter, who is an instructional assistant, has been stepping in to cover a vacancy for general music for the last few months. While not formally musically trained herself, she has, in this short time, gotten a crash course in music education and gone truly above and beyond to ensure that the students get the best experience possible in general music. I cannot thank her enough... she is a consummate professional and passionate about not just filling in, but actually making this a great experience for the students. Thank you so much Ms. Carter!!!!!!!!!!!"

Meredith Leech, Hunt Valley ES - view the celebration!
"My kindergartner loves being outside. She is an adventurer who takes advantage of nature's gifts in every season, but this year her biggest wish was for snow. After a long winter break in quarantine trying to make the holiday special for our kids despite cancelled plans, the snow out the window brought a smile to all of our faces! After hours of playing outside and shoveling snow, I opened my email and was surprised to see an email from my daughter's teacher Ms. Leech. Apparently my daughter had been sharing her sadness and frustration about the lack of snow every day in December. Meredith Leech's first thought upon seeing the snow outside was that my daughter had finally had her wish granted. She could have dismissed this thought and gone about her snow day, but Meredith took the time out of her schedule to connect with us and let us know she was thinking of our daughter. After two weeks of feeling so isolated, her simple communication was incredibly appreciated. Thank you for making such an incredible difference in the lives of my daughter and our family."

Amy Moir, Woodson HS - view the celebration!
"Our 10th grade son just finished performing in his first Dessert on Broadway this past weekend at Woodson HS. What an amazing experience it was! Woodson Choral Director, Amy Moir, clearly knows all of her students very well, casting every student who wanted to participate and finding them songs that showcase their strengths and that are engaging for the students and the audience. Students hone Portrait of a Graduate skills as they communicate with one another to set up and to execute group practices on their own time. They collaborate with one another and their student choreography as they think critically and creatively to create their pieces. I loved seeing how goal-driven and resilient my son was throughout the whole process with an authentic audience and chance to share their creation with their community as the carrot at the end. Ms. Moir also involves many other staff and students in this program. I believe two classroom teachers helped costume the entire cast. A Woodson student photographed the event. Many numbers were choreographed by students. Any student in the school could sign up to be a server for the dessert aspect of the show. Dessert on Broadway showcases the talents and hard-work ethic of so many Woodson students. It was a big disappointment to lose the Friday night show due to weather, but Ms. Moir had a plan and effectively communicated it to the students, the parents, and the ticket holders. Ms. Moir has clearly developed a strong Choral Booster organization in that DOB was run by a plethora of parent volunteers. I had the pleasure of running the cast & crew party after the show, and I loved seeing Ms. Moir interact with her students who clearly love and respect her. As she handed out student superlative awards to many in the production, her positive rapport was very apparent. What a treasure Ms. Moir is for our community."

Beth Beal, Laurel Ridge ES
"First grade with Ms. Beal has been beyond expectations. She is so good at teaching the kids and helping them get to their next level while also being supportive. As a parent, I have been amazed at the level of care and attention that she has given my child during such a difficult year. She sends me emails or calls me to let me know how she is doing. My child has so much more confident from being in her classroom. Ms. Beal has really created an atmosphere where the kids are stimulated and want to learn more. She is amazing and we are so lucky to have her!"

Meghan Ehrman, Fairview ES
"Meghan Ehrman is an amazing educator, and our children are fortunate to have her as our AP. She knows all kids by name and by need and ensures they all have the tools to be successful. Mrs. Ehrman is constantly checking on her staff to offer guidance, lend an ear, or give a compliment. She comes to work with a smile on her face everyday. Mrs. Ehrman forms meaningful relationships with students. Whether it's a check-in at the end of the day or a mid-day energy release, she is sure to be available whenever a child needs her. Meghan, you rock!!!"

Erin Denton, Daniels Run ES
"Mrs. Erin Denton is not only a top notch teacher, she is a top notch individual. Mrs. Denton has fostered a love of learning in our daughter that was definitely impacted during a year of virtual learning. It is beyond clear that she meets her students where they are, celebrates their strengths, incorporates their interests, and teaches them to use the tools they need to be successful. Our daughter is not just learning the curriculum, she is learning how to study, to think critically, executive functioning skills, and to be a good human. There is no doubt she is growing as a student. The conversations that happen around our dinner table, about her day, continue to wow and amaze us. When our daughter broke her arm on the playground at recess, we came home from the hospital to cupcakes and flowers from the one and only Mrs. Denton. She sent home work so Lily could become comfortable writing and completing daily tasks when she was ready to return. Mrs. Denton was not concerned about her missing content, but that she returned the classroom in a way that made her feel successful. She created Flipgrid videos with the class and dropped off cards, truly demonstrating the strong classroom community that she created. Our daughter may have been a little broken, her bone and her spirit, but Mrs. Denton was there for her and created a positive space in the school setting. Our daughter has never been the best student or the worst student. She has positively progressed throughout her school years. However, this year, we have seen an amazing surge in her, academically and social-emotionally, that can only be explained by Mrs. Denton's efforts. As two educators ourselves, we are beyond thankful.

Elizabeth Brocato, Woodson HS
"I want to give a much needed shoutout to Liz Brocato from Woodson HS. This past weekend, there was an unexpected emergency at the school that ended up shutting down the facility on Sunday. Woodson was slated to host a large church group, their first meeting at the school, that day (mind you, with an 8:00am start time). Thanks to Liz's speedy communication, the church group was notified and able to make alternate plans. Liz, thank you for all you do to support community use at your school, regardless of what day it is. All the appreciation!"

Thank you! They came for multiple days, although I could only choose one for the "date of experience".

Nicole Bellucci, Braddock ES
"I would like to nominate Nicole Bellucci for an FCPS Cares Award! She was contacted this week to be told that she would be receiving a new student (from my current school) and was able to immediately meet with me that very afternoon to learn about the student. She has been in communication with me since we met, and has taken the time to learn about the student's academic and personal needs. She has made him feel so welcome, and has helped ease the minds of his former teachers. She even sent us a picture of his first day of school! I hope all FCPS students have an opportunity to work with teachers who care as much as Ms. Bellucci clearly does!"

Erin-Carroll Ryan, Orange Hunt ES
"Mrs. Ryan and her assistant, Mrs. Fisher, are phenomenal assets to the OHES kindergarten team. Mrs. Ryan goes above and beyond to form relationships with her students (and families!) to get to know them as individuals so that she can tailor her classroom space and her instruction to their needs. Despite this being our first full year back in the building since COVID, she makes it look easy and effortless (but we all know it isn't!). My little guy is a mover and a shaker and the epitome of a social butterfly. While some teachers do not understand the need for some of our littlest learners to move while they learn, Mrs. Ryan finds ways to accommodate their need for movement along with their learning. She and Mrs. Fisher are experts at anticipating what their students need and providing it before that need becomes an issue that might be disruptive to the student or the class. In addition to being a superhero in her classroom, Mrs. Ryan is an amazing collaborator and partner with her parents. Every time I send an email with a quick question or concern, she is very responsive and has so many ideas. For example, when my little guy was struggling to stay in his own bubble (again, he's a social butterfly!), we chatted about it and I wrote him a quick social story. That's what he gets with a preschool SPED teacher as a mom! Anyway, Mrs. Ryan takes time every morning...EVERY MORNING...to read his social story with him so that he starts the day on the right foot. She does not hesitate to offer extra solutions or ideas, even when I know those solutions/ideas mean extra work for her in a time when all teachers are overwhelmed and exhausted. She is clear in her expectations and clear in her love and patience for her students. She is a ROCK STAR and we are SO fortunate that she and Mrs. Fisher are our little guy's teachers this year! Did I mention that she's also awesome at teaching kindergarten academics in an engaging, effective, and super fun way?"

Dotty Lin, Kings Park ES
"Where do I begin? When I first came to KP, I came to know Dotty as an instructional leader who modeled excellence. She has been an exceptional principal as chaos descended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her intentionality and measured approach to change kept us afloat. I'm writing today to highlight the power of those measured positive steps forward. Over the last few years, even with everything that has been happening, Dotty has empowered our staff to embrace Young Scholars and to work toward becoming a Local Level IV next year. Teachers are excited and are asking to collaborate more and more to increase access to rigor for all. I truly cannot imagine being an elementary school principal in this day and age, and I am so grateful to work with a thoughtful, caring change-maker. I am also grateful that this is my neighborhood school and that my now-Kindergartener will directly benefit from the positive changes and strong instruction happening across KP."
- Mary Keane, Kings Park ES

------
Brooke LaPorta, Bryant HS
"On top of teaching responsibilities and getting new students that she is building a relationship with, she has been working with students all day long to remediate them so they can have another attempt at the SOL. She has worked with these students all day in her class remediating them as well as teaching to her other students and creating a new curriculum at the same time. She has done it with grace and the ability to make each student feel at ease and valued in her classroom."
- Darren Ritson, Bryant HS

Scott Wultors, Westfield HS
"Scott Wultors has been my BC calculus teacher and I'm impressed. He constantly goes out of his way to make sure his students are comfortable with the curriculum and flow of the lessons. He spends countless hours afterschool just to make sure his students aren't lost and can stay on track. I mean it with all my heart when I say Scott Wultors is the most perfect teacher you can get. There is nothing I can think about that would make him better. He has the right combination of humor, strictness, patience, and other qualities that make him quite literally the best teacher. It's not just me. I've talked with many of my peers and we all agree that Mr. Wultors fits our imagination of a perfect teacher. In fact I'm procrastinating on my Physics Homework just to write this much needed message. That just shows how much Scott Wultors means to his students. Mr. Wultors, if you see this thank you for all the dedication you put into your job. We all love you. Keep doing what you do best. Teaching!"

He has gained so much confidence in the last few months, especially in Algebra 2, in addition to his improved grades. He is now raising his hand and asking questions in class which he has never done in his high school years. The impact that Laura has on this student's life is tremendous."

"Ms. Allen is filling in for a teacher out on medical leave. In her short time with IAS, she has jumped into her role with determination and enthusiasm. She has input student grades, helped students catch up on assignments, and co-planned a research unit for quarter 3. Today she supported students in taking their Reading Inventories online. She has demonstrated a willingness to adapt and be flexible, and the students in her charge are thriving. Sarah Vandruff, Falls Church HS
"In addition to working simultaneously with her classroom of WAT students, Sarah was able to collaborate with me on a shared student for which we are trying to find new and different activities utilizing technology. She provides individualized activities and support for each student in her class on a regular basis, including collaborating with a variety of related services staff, which while helpful often interrupt plans, and she collaborates with each therapy provider/teacher/related service provider/coach, and includes us seamlessly into her class activities for the best outcomes for all of her students."

William Cox, Kings Park ES
"We see Mr. Cox outside at drop off and pick up times - when we are part of that line. Our child is always sure to tell us how wonderful his days and times with Mr. Cox are. We have encouraged our child to try going through the lunch line, however, he has refused, thus far. Yesterday, however, he saw Mr. Cox assisting someone else, and was excited to try the corndogs, and (as we heard it) asked for help to get the mini corndogs too, and was so excited that Mr. Cox helped him. We hear daily stories and excitement about our child going to school, and among other school staff Mr. Cox is often prominent in the excitement and readiness to go to school on a daily basis. Thank you, Mr. Cox."

Alaine Diehl, Kings Park ES
"Mrs. Reinert was responsive to emails that we sent as parents to share connectivity concerns, while also working with dozens of Kindergarteners (who had not previously had time in online learning (unlike all of their older peers who did online previously during the pandemic). She worked well with the children, and kept them focused, engaged, participating, and excited during her lessons. Our child comes home from school on a regular basis excited about all he has done in school that day, and excited to go to school the next day, including for our short switch to virtual instruction for a short day of school. We are so happy with her interaction with us, but mostly we are happy for her interactions and encouragement to learn for our child in her class. For the short virtual snow day, and for every day, she deserves recognition. Thank you, Ms. Reinert!"

Amy Deemer, Chantilly HS
"Ms. Deemer is a professional social worker. She made me feel welcome at Chantilly High, even attending my IEPs. When I witnessed a fight going on in the Sub School 5 Stairwell 7 years ago, I got Ms. Daniels involved to break it up. Ms. Deemer came to my rescue and I even told her about the fight in the Subschool 5 stairwell. She also helped me out when another student was extremely abrasive and nasty towards me after my parents returned from Europe. Ms. Deemer also participated in the Class of 2015 graduation breakfast in SS5 for my peers and me who graduated 7 years ago. She deserves a raise and we need more caring and compassionate people like her."

Sara Quesenbery, Baileys ES
"As we worked to prepare for our first virtual learning day, Sara went above and beyond to ensure that our staff and students were ready to teach and learn online. She offered a Zoom refresher session for our staff, created tech information sheets to help students use their laptops at home, and worked with classroom teachers to implement procedures to support students as they began taking their laptops home every week. In addition, she set aside time to meet one on one with some of our teachers to help them feel more comfortable with teaching online again. Sara is the epitome of a team player who willingly gives of her time to support her colleagues and our students. Her calm and thoughtful demeanor made our transition to virtual learning a successful one. I am so thankful to have her as a member of the Bailey’s ES family!"

Allyson Talbot, Kings Park ES
"Being a kindergartener our child was very concerned about attending school for the first time. From the first week of school (chasing our child around the neighborhood to get him safely back into the classroom) to today (emailing us to determine the best course of action for a kindergartener with a heavy laptop to take back and forth to school daily) and everything in between (emailing activities he particularly enjoyed in class, sending pictures of class activities, providing him check-ins with Pete-The-Cat when needed) Mrs. Talbot has gone above and beyond to assist a new kindergartener and the parents that go with him, to have the best start to a school career that is possible. We cannot thank Mrs. Talbot, and the whole team that works with our child enough."

Kevin McDonnell, Sprague Technology Center
"We are grateful to have had the help of Mr. McDonnell and his team help us with our Winter Music Performances last month. When we had to move to a live-stream format, there were a lot of questions about whether we would be able to easily stream to our students and those in the pyramid, and even if we could - would it look and sound good? We wanted to be able to share a professional presentation with our community to honor the work of our students. Enter Mr. McDonnell and his team. Even though they had several other projects going on, they dedicated manpower and know-how to RCMS. Their professionalism and attention to detail was a gift to our school. Thank you for your help!"

Michael Hale, Carson MS
"Mike is an incredible TSSpec. I regularly witnessed him going the extra mile to support his colleagues. One such occasion happened last month. Our school regularly hosts our entire school and pyramid 6th graders for an in-person winter music department performance, but this year needed to move to a mostly live-streamed format due to spacing concerns. This was a stressful undertaking for the music teachers. Mike stepped in to take the burden off of our shoulders, spending countless extra hours practicing with streaming equipment, reaching out to colleagues for audio suggestions, and when we were able to secure support from county Event A/V Logistics, Mike willingly became the point person. These were all extra efforts he made for the music department and for our students. He knew our students deserved to sound as great through the stream as they do in person, and he knew the teachers wanted to focus on their work with the students. Mike made a significant impact on our entire community by taking on these extra responsibilities and ensuring we were able to share the best product possible."

Not only does Bryan work continually on making updates and creating pages and content for the FCPS web and the Employee Hub, but he also supports the work of school website curators. He is proactive in his support by creating helpful videos and on-demand support, as well as timely communication through email and phone calls. Angela Kheradmand, Madison HS
"Angela joined the Warhawk family this year as a part-time ESOL Literacy Support Specialist, after retiring from over 30 years of service in the county. She works long hours, well beyond what we are able to compensate her for, because it is what the students need. Her level of dedication is evident in her planning, interactions and her investment in students as young adults. She is creates a classroom that is warm and inviting and guides students in their learning by providing essential literacy skills for life. Every student thrives with the support of Mrs. Kheradmand. Angela typically works Monday through Thursday in the building, but has now added Friday, out of her own goodwill, because two students in particular need more intensive support. One of these students has progressed so far that he is now performing at the level of his peers and has the potential to pass the writing Work Keys. After extensive conversations with these two students, it is evident that Angela is the teacher that has really connected with them. They struggle with behaviors in other classes, but will respond with a high level of respect to Mrs. Kheradmand. She has been their saving grace and continues to advocate and do whatever is necessary to help them succeed and grow."

Mary Sills, Vienna ES
"My 1st grader came home having lost his tooth at school during lunch time. To a 6 year old who has only lost one tooth before, this was a huge deal in his day. He told us all of the details surrounding the scenario including how the amazing School Health Aide, Ms. Sills, helped to ease his worries about swallowing his tooth and encouraged him to write an explanation of the day's events to the tooth fairy- which he did:). Thought this might sound trivial, I could tell this interaction and time spent with him meant a lot to him. In the midst of all of the many other situations and responsibilities that come with being a School Health Aide, we are just so grateful that Ms. Sills helped to allow our 1st grader to return to learning in his classroom, worry free. Keri Mueller, Laurel Hill ES
"Everything is fun and magical with Mrs. Mueller, and the first virtual snow day was no exception. I was nervous. My daughter was thrilled! The first thing she told me when I picked her up on Wednesday was, "Mrs. Mueller said we could wear pajamas to school tomorrow!" Mrs. Mueller provided detailed information for parents, which was incredibly helpful. She sent home manipulatives and hands-on activities, which she incorporated into her live, virtual instruction. Her instruction was well-paced, included lots of movement, and frequent and fun checks for understanding. My daughter was happily engaged the whole virtual learning day and I was even able to get work done. My daughter enjoyed her virtual learning day so much, she didn't want to sign out of Zoom. Thank you Mrs. Mueller for being an amazing teacher, both in-person and online."

Lemlem Woldemichael, Gatehouse Admin Center
"I am writing to praise Lemlem Woldemichael on her good interpretation service today. She was flexible as we moved the meeting from in person to virtual to teleconference. During the conference she was skilled at interpreting between me (English speaker) the father (Modest amount of English and fluent in another language) and mother (another language). She was good at communicating to me what both parents said even if they contradicted each other. Lemlem was also good at telling me when she was doing something less typical, like restating the questions to the parents when they hadn’t directly addressed them. I appreciated her professionalism and dexterity in interpreting for the tricky conference."

"The Spanish Immersion Kindergarten teachers at Laurel Ridge are a true example of hard work, compassion & dedication. These teachers spent countless hours preparing our 5 & 6 year old's for a possible virtual snow day; a big feat to say the least. My son came home excited to have his own laptop and confident in how to use it, thanks to the help of his teachers. I cannot even fathom the hours of work it takes to prepare to teach 5 & 6 year old students virtually and most would say you'd be a saint to even try and our teachers willingly give themselves and their time to ensure the very best instruction is delivered to their students. As a parent, I was thankful for the communication from the teachers on how to access links via Schoology and login information to support my student if need be. Jay Brunkow, Lorton Center
"On 1/12/2022 at about 9 PM I was waiting outside of Door 14 at Lake Braddock Secondary School for the Woodson Wrestling team to come out so I could take them back to their school. Then, all of a sudden the engine on my bus stopped running. I called the maintenance facility at Newington, and they determined that the bus had to be towed. OK, but what about transport for the students and coach? At 9 PM resources are very hard to come by. I went out on the radio with a desperate call for help, and Jay Brunkow responded. He was just parking his bus for the night, but heard the call, and came all the way back to Lake Braddock. Jay returned the wrestling team to Woodson, and then brought me back to my car, which was parked at Newington! Jay could have ignored my call: I am sure he was tired after a long day of driving. but he didn't! Without Jay, it would have been a long (and probably) cold night before the wrestling team got back to their school. He turned what could have been a major catastrophe into a somewhat minor inconvenience. Thank you so much, Jay!"

Lori would take the time to create meaningful art opportunities for the preschool students as well as lead circle time, work on pre academic skills, manage behaviors, collect data, and maintain positive relationships with all of the students. I am thankful to have a colleague like Lori to work alongside during unexpected challenges."

"Huge shoutout to the FCPS staff that are responding to all COVID inquiries. It seems like information is ever-changing and I always get a thorough reply typically in less than an hour. This is huge in turnaround time allowing us to communicate with staff, students, and families. A million thanks for a taking on and crushing this challenging job."

Maria Henriquez, Fairhill ES
"Maria Henriquez represents what a building supervisor should be. I have seen her take responsibility and care of Fairhill with exemplary character and diligence. Today she noticed a water leak near exit 1 caused from a burst pipe under the street. She alerted maintenance for the safety of buses, students, staff, and the community. She didn’t want it to cause ice and lead to injury. She placed cones where it is, to alert others of this potential hazard caused by cold weather and under the street infrastructure. Well done!!!!"

Ashley Lowry, McLean HS
"Ashley was wonderful this morning running the technology for our PTSA meeting. She kept everything running smoothly with a big smile on her face even when we ran long overtime. I know she has been busy lately training all of the McLean teachers to use Schoology and other applications to best serve our students. Keep up the good work Ashley and thanks for your help today."

Stephen Howes, Franklin MS
"Steve Howes cares about students. He is genuine, compassionate and kind to each and every student he comes in contact with. He's the kind of person who makes you want to become a better educator. He happily accepts astronomical numbers of students (45+) into his classes and still takes the time to form 1:1 relationships with them. He truly is an outstanding teacher, mentor and colleague."

Anthony Felt, Crossfield ES
"As an itinerant in many schools, I truly appreciate Tony's willingness to help me fix my computer issues as well as my student intern issues. He rarely sees me, but if I have problem, he happily stops what he is doing to make sure I'm up and running. Thank you Tony!"

"I'd like to thank my colleagues listed above for taking on the students from my IEP caseload while I was out on maternity leave from September-December. I know they already have a lot on their plates with their own caseloads, planning instruction for their subject areas, and dealing with all the struggles teachers have been handling during this trying school year, so it is truly appreciated that they added one more thing onto their plate. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making sure my students stayed afloat and their needs were being met."

David Wickham, Lake Braddock SS
"I am nominating David Wickham because he is one of the most caring and compassionate teachers I know. He always is looking out for his students, including those that may be overlooked by many due to behavior or performance issues. He is able to find the spark within each person he encounters and bring that to light. He does the same with his teaching community. He is always on the hunt for ways to make teaching better, to lift up colleagues, to share inspiration, and to generally brighten the day of any and all who encounter him. I have taught with David on and off for over ten years, and every day, I feel that I learn something new from him in how to be a better person and teacher."

Maureen Szente, Marshall HS
"Maureen writes the best updates in her Career and Transition Services Schoology Group for her students and parents at Marshall HS. Because I am a member of her Schoology Group, she has given me permission to use some of these updates for my students and parents at West Springfield HS. Her communication skills and ability to reach out to students and families are in the superior range, so I am very appreciative to use some of these updates and share them with my families. She is a tremendous resource with many years of experience, and Marshall HS is lucky to have her working as their ETR!"

Tyisha Williamson, Johnson MS
"Tyisha is one of our amazing school counselors here at KJMS. She is always super helpful, but today in particular she went above and beyond. There was a teacher who needed some tech help from me, but I happened to be working with students who were having technology issues in my office. Tyisha saw that I was unable to help the teacher in need, and without hesitation she stepped away and offered tech help to the teacher. KJMS is a place where teachers and staff would bend over backwards to help staff and students in need. I am very grateful to work in an environment like this, it is motivating and encouraging to see."

Courtney MacCormack, Edison HS
"Ms. MacCormack came to West Springfield HS to help Mr. Wolfe with an electrician recruiting presentation. She helped numerous students with the hands-on portion of the presentation (setting up a single pole light switch with a receptacle), and was able to answer questions about her role as an Academy Resource teacher. Additionally, Ms. MacCormack participated in about 5 recruiting class presentations to WSHS students to help them learn more about the Edison Academy classes and how to talk with their school counselors, attend Open Houses and visit if they are interested in learning more. I have worked with Courtney for 7 years, first in her role as an EFEO teacher, and now as an Academy Resource Teacher. She really goes above and beyond to help the students succeed, and Edison Academy is lucky to have her. I am so glad that I was able to continue working with her because she shifted to a location/position that allowed us to continue to collaborate."

Joseph Wolfe, Edison HS
"Mr. Wolfe came to WSHS to do a hands-on presentation to students who may be interested in learning a skilled trade, and specifically to share information to those who may like to attend his Electrical and Construction Engineering class next year. In 2018-19, Mr. Wolfe worked with two WSHS Level 2 Electrical students to create a work-based learning kit to help students have a more interactive career guest speaker experience. We got a grant from the Foundation of Fairfax County (now called Educate Fairfax) and bought supplies to set up a single pole light switch with a receptacle. He gave this presentation in February 2019. One of the students in the audience took Mr. Wolfe's Level 1 class his sophomore year. On December 8, 2021, that same student returned to give the presentation with Mr. Wolfe as a Level 3 student and student team leader. I have worked with Mr. Wolfe in my capacity as an ETR for about 7 years, and he is always going above and beyond for his students. He does a great job "selling" skilled trades, and his knowledge and professionalism makes him one of the best teachers in FCPS in my opinion. Edison Academy is lucky to have him, as are the students who attend his classes."

Yvonne Smit, Centreville ES
"I would like to share praises for our daughter's second grade teacher, Yvonne Smit. We feel very lucky to have Mrs. Smit leading our child's classroom this year. Her communication with parents really sets her apart. Daily emails recapping the skills learned each day as well as questions (and answers!) to ask our child each night, plus a picture, help busy parents stay engaged in their child's learning! I want Mrs. Smit to know that we genuinely appreciate the extra time she puts into these emails. Thank you for going above and beyond to communicate to your students and their families!"

Kelli Arditti, Haycock ES
"Kelli is nothing short of a most diligent, brilliant mathematics and science teacher who seamlessly differentiates, meeting each child's need for understanding and success. First and foremost, she does her work with great respect daily for her students. To epitomize her great insight and kindness was a wonderful observation she made at our school playground! I nominate Kelli for the Region 2/Fairfax County CARES teacher this month, as her seemingly simple observation, with great hope and love can be one of the most important things a teacher can do, at any time. Kelli noted that her sixth graders overlap recess time with another grade level in which a student is unable to physically participate. She came to me, as over the years we have a Buddy Program with sixth graders offering friendship and academic support for selected students (yet unable to do the program during pandemic times.) However, Kelli was the one to note this dear child in need of friends at recess. Quickly, we selected sixth graders and formulated a plan to include this child in ways the child is able to participate in outdoor recess. Friday before winter break, our counselor shared with me a photo of the child beautifully smiling and laughing with friends on a swing! What deep appreciation I felt in that moment for Kelli Arditti's astute observation to alert us of this need! Coincidentally, during winter break, I read the National Book Award finalist/Virginia Readers Choice book titled "When Stars are Scattered" and noted a picture of a child similarly not included --yet now swinging, smiling and loved (page 88 of the text) which read, "Maryam was right - Hassan loved the swing. He seemed to love Maryam's little siblings, too - and they LOVED HIM." We must honor Kelli Arditti for her great kindness, love and observation to help a child. This is love for others, and what is needed in our schools, and our world today."

Erin Kestler, Kilmer MS
"I just want to express my sincere appreciation for Ms. Kestler’s unwavering professionalism and commitment to positive parent communication. In reaching out to Ms. Kestler to address concerns over what turned out to be a misunderstanding on my part, Ms. Kestler responded with absolute compassion, clarity, and kindness. Her quick reply and helpful, patient assurances not only immediately put me at ease, but also served as an ideal model of how school representatives can effectively continue to facilitate, foster, and encourage mutually-beneficial school-to-home relationships that are integral to student success! I have such respect for the way in which Ms. Kestler disarmingly and thoughtfully performs her role, and she deserves recognition and appreciation for her efforts."

Raju Tiwana, Aldrin ES
"Mr. Raju Tiwana actively participates supporting third grade recess at Aldrin ES every single day! Throughout the entire 30 minute recess period, he provides support with physical skill attainment; however, more importantly, he provides individualized support with social and emotional learning. Thank you for going above and beyond, Mr. Tiwana! You are appreciated!"

Ken Junge, Colvin Run ES
"Mr. Junge rolls out the red carpet for this school community. He is quick to respond, sincere in his commitment to the students and community and relentless in finding solutions to challenges. He is very supportive of the PTO and the programs that bring joy and enrichment to the students. He is very easy to work with and is the example of true customer service. While his leadership has always been strong, over the almost two-year period of this pandemic, he has been exceptionally kind and provided support and reassurance to the kids and families dealing with the unknown. If he does not have an answer, he will find you who does. Mr. Junge is a truly effective leader who serves with kindness and joy."
