Loretta Cross, Transportation - Lorton
"Loretta Cross and my kids (ages 5 and 3) have built a special bond over the last couple of months. My kids love people, are very active, and love to talk. Quarantine life has been tough for them. We made it a morning routine to always walk to pick up meals at our neighborhood school. Every morning Loretta greeted us like they were her own grandchildren. Very quickly-- walking to see Ms. Cross in the morning was the highlight of their day, and dropping Ms. Cross's name was the only thing to get them to hurry up to get ready for the day. They did not want to miss seeing Ms. Cross! Daily, Ms. Cross would gift my kids something special, and my kids would cherish these little treasures and take them for virtual show and share, or to play with all day. Daily, Ms. Cross would give words of encouragement for my kids and myself (I am a teacher), and give us such positivity and enthusiasm for the day. For the month of October, Ms. Cross dressed daily in Fabulous Pink Outfits (which my daughter adored) to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To our dismay, the bus routes are changing due to students returning in person, so we won't be seeing Ms. Cross daily, but I know she will sprinkle joy and love wherever she goes on the bus!"

Brian Sladki, Aldrin ES
"The date of our experience with Brian Sladki actually started on the very first day of school and has continued each and every day since then. Brian has gone BEYOND above and beyond with not only my son but his entire class. Now that we are all home together, I have had the privilege of observing Brian on a regular basis. He is not only compassionate and kind, but his patience with the children is remarkable! Most importantly, I'd like to recognize Brian for the additional time and attention he has shown towards my son. HE reached out to US with concerns regarding our son's progress in school. Like so many, distant learning has proven to be very difficult for my active boy. I am beyond grateful that Brian took the time to express his concerns so that together we can come up with a plan to get my son back on track. Brian is always willing to jump on a phone call or respond to an email with status updates. He even assembled a Score Card for every single child in the class showing their progress. The scorecard is full of valuable information and includes suggestions for growth in areas where the kids are struggling. For the record, Brian is doing this on his own time. Additionally, as if Brian is not doing enough already, he took the time to create an IMPRESSIVE Parent Portal that has been a lifesaver for so many of us. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Brian, for EVERYTHING! Thank you to ALL of the teachers out there. We know how hard you are working and we are so grateful for it! We will never forget this time and we will never forget any of you! Cheers!"

Jan Rayl, Falls Church HS Academy
"Ms. Rayl works with the Fairfax County School of Practical Nursing FCPS Program as an instructor in the Intro to Nursing and Patient Care Technician classes. She is also a registered nurse. She volunteered her time to participate in West Springfield High School's first VIRTUAL Career Fair by creating a video for students to see about working in the health care industry. Her video was fantastic. I have had the opportunity to see her teach before when I visited her program with a student. As an instructor, she is knowledgeable and kind. I often tell students who are interested in these classes how wonderful she is. She was also one of the first teachers to go back into the building with students since the COVID-19 closures. She is an amazing resource and FCPS is lucky to have her."
- Rebecca Cousins, West Springfield HS
Region 3
Mike Henrich, West Potomac HS
"Mr. Henrich is our school SOSA & came to West Po last school year. He is amazing. He truly cares about the kids and when we transitioned to virtual instruction, he has continued to go out of his way to support all students but especially those that need some extra TLC. At school, he supervises ISS/in-school suspension and works with students that are often considered difficult. Mr. Henrich has done home visits, visited students at their work, called countless parents, helped collaborate with teachers and counselors to reach students that would otherwise likely fall through the cracks. He is so genuinely kind and compassionate. Mr. Henrich goes out of his way to support all students and take time to get to know them which builds trust and rapport. The students adore him and he really has improved our entire school morale. We (teachers, staff, counselors, students--the entire school community) are so lucky to have him at West Po!"

Jamaal Hines, Lake Braddock SS
Jamaal Hines has been a great addition to our staff this year. As a new Middle School After School Specialist, Jamaal has hit the ground running. While we are in a non-traditional (virtual) environment, Jamaal has still provided incredible opportunities to engage middle school students in extra-curricular activities. Whether it is after school cooking classes (virtual) or holding a Candy Madness bracket where students could hold a march madness poll on the best Halloween candy, Mr. Hines has been extremely creative in engaging students. Additionally, he has created a virtual self-care room for faculty and staff to decompress and de-stress, a service of vital importance at this time. Mr. Hines is a great asset to Lake Braddock and we are fortunate to have him!

Mark Daugherty, Stone MS
"Mr. Daugherty took the time to send a personal notification via USPS to my son before the school year started to inform him that he would be the science teacher for the year. My son was thrilled by the piece of mail addressed to him and the news. He ran upstairs to check his yearbook to confirm Mr. Daugherty was the person he remembered from last year's Veteran's Day event at the school. Then in September, Mr. Daugherty took the time to send a birthday card to my son via USPS. How cool and thoughtful is that! Finally, to complete a class assignment, Mr. Daugherty delivered a key supply to my son at home. He has been responsive to my messages to him and to messages from my son as well. The little bits of class that I hear seem engaging. We're bummed that we're not getting the in-person experience with Mr. Daugherty because we know it would be even more amazing, but we've been impressed by him every step of the way in the virtual environment. There's no doubt in my mind that he meets the CARES qualifications!"

Stephanie Lewis, Hayfield ES
"Imagine trying to teach a 9-year-old with zero musical experience how to play the violin. Even in ideal situations, this is a challenge. Now imagine trying to do that while completely virtual. Ms. Lewis has been doing exactly that over the last few months. Ms. Lewis is an enthusiastic, patient, caring, and very knowledgeable. She has worked with my son in a small group but has also taken time to meet with him one on one when he was having trouble and getting frustrated. Ms. Lewis is a wonderful music teacher and because of her influence my son is developing a real love for the violin."

Beth Levy, Eagle View ES
"Beth Levy is a valuable member of the admin team as assistant principal. Beth has been at Eagle View for several years and is one of the main reasons for the success of our school and students. Beth has helped to support the transition and implementation of the Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in the building. She launched this process by ensuring that we had a core group of staff trained, developed a process/spreadsheet of tracking student progress, and created routine check-ins for grade levels to ensure that we were meeting student's needs.
She is also pivotal in creating and developing our attendance team to include routine check-ins with families. She has worked with the office team and clinical team to reach out to students and families and offer support via community resources to help families struggling with student attendance.
She is always available to work with staff and students and makes extra efforts to check-in, have lunch bunches (online) and to reach out with resources to support staff development. As an assistant principal she continues to ensure that testing, schedules, and routines are tightly run with minimal disruption to our instructional schedule. Her hard work and dedication to the Eagle View staff and community are tremendous and highly impactful. We are so very fortunate to have her as one of our leaders!"

"Sharlean Grinups is the Teacher, Wellness Liaison, and HPE Department Chair at Westfield High School. Shar not only lives a healthy lifestyle; she is also a strong advocate for healthy practices among our students and staff. Whenever FCPS launches a health competition, she leads and encourages participation. As a result, Westfield either wins or finishes among the top teams competing. She has consistently done professional development for our staff on exercises and healthy eating, but during the pandemic, sharing has continued and increased. She routinely provides the staff with information about free online exercises, free health and wellness, and free yoga classes. This has been a much-appreciated benefit to our staff. Her sharing and encouragement have made a positive difference for many during this difficult time, and we appreciate her for being a role model of healthy living, positive thinking, and spirit."

Eileen Donohue, Great Falls ES
Mrs. Donohue is doing an INCREDIBLY AWESOME job teaching them to break down and analyze texts in Language Arts. Truly, her passion and experience come through and we can hear it from the other room! We appreciate the painstaking steps and that she is taking them through it slowly and in great detail because it really will sink in. What she is teaching them is the foundation for all learning. I don't have a sense for the pace, whether kids are on track or behind for this point in the year but Mrs. Donohue is bringing it every single day and they ARE getting the depth and content. This year is hard. This year is different. Despite everything the 6th-grade teachers this year are firm, but positive and encouraging. They lift UP, rather than put down. I can hear the difference, my kid can feel the difference and it directly translates into motivation.

In her first year with us she made deep connections with many of our families and helped them interface more with school information and events. She has navigated families through technological challenges, helped with getting students registered, insured students had the school supplies they needed, and made sure families were aware of food resources available to them. She does all this with compassion, kindness, and a positive attitude. We are lucky to have Miriam as our Parent Liaison!"

"Nicole is only in her second year as a teacher but I have been very impressed by how she has adapted to this unusual school year. She has found ways to engage the class through using multiple different wen applications and options, her lessons are fun and engaging (one benefit of virtual schooling is I get to see my children "in" class and my daughter adores Miss Ender). Nicole has spent time working with the parents to develop relationships with both the student and the family and has worked hard to build a sense of class community using things like the school wide costume contest to help do this. She has worked with my daughter who was nervous about AAP math and needed to build her confidence and Nicole took the time to help her build that confidence through daily check ins during office hours and even after school until my daughters self belief grew - now she loves math and is doing really well in it. Every Friday Nicole takes the time to create fun activities for the children to do together virtually to build community. Her hard work and commitment is very much appreciated."

Rosa Cruz, Westfield HS
"Rosa is an amazing Building Supervisor at Westfield High School. She works closely with Terri Towle, the Director of Student Activities to run many of the daily operations of the school. We are in a pandemic and many elements of planning for school have changed over the course of the last few months, Rosa has remained calm, steadfast, communicative, and so productive--all while working with a staff of many to provide the best services for our community. Much of the work that she does is behind the scenes--but I wanted to acknowledge her positive spirit and dedication to the students and staff. She is wonderful!"

Morgan Birge, Lemon Road ES
"Morgan has been a consistent source of support and help throughout the pandemic. On several occasions my family has experienced technical difficulties - an inadvertently deleted BBCU link, a malfunctioning laptop, a student app that isn't working would all be examples - and on every occasion as soon as I've mentioned it to Morgan he has had it resolved or on the path to resolution. His communication is consistently supportive, positive and approachable - he always makes you feel like he has time for you. At every opportunity Morgan demonstrates his support for the school community - he has been present at every laptop or supply distribution event, every PTA meeting, every town hall meeting and virtual evening event. When the school held a virtual costume contest Morgan kept the fun going all day with multiple costume changes and posts - which the children loved and which really helped to boost the sense of community."

Ashley Castillo, Lemon Road ES
"Ashley Castillo is an outstanding leader. Even before the 2020 craziness the parent community at LRES was impressed by her positivity, engagement and support of the staff and students but since the pandemic started she has really stepped into her own. She answers emails at midnight to make sure she gets back to you quickly - and still takes the time and effort to fill them with kindness, understanding and patience. She is active in the classes, popping into lessons or taking over for absent teachers or even when technical glitches mean the teacher lost connections. She communicates swiftly, professionally and with empathy - something so important at the moment. Despite all the stresses and challenges she must be handling at the moment she comes to every every PTA board meeting (virtually of course) and every PTA meeting and has held multiple parent town halls to ensure transparence and support parents as they work through these challenging times. She is consistently engaged, positive and supportive. She always gives the impression she has time for you and your concerns. LRES has been an (even!) sunnier, happier place since Ashley took over but true leaders show themselves in times of challenge and Ashley has conducted herself throughout this time in such a way that she has the absolute trust of the staff, students and parent community - I am so grateful that she is our principal."

Margo is always willing to assist me in whatever I need done in class, she offers to come to WIN time and office hours to help assist students, she relates well to the students and always comes up with other explanations to help students remember the steps of solving a particular problem, and she is always willing to pull kids into a breakout room to help the students in class. Charlotte Quigley, Little Run ES
"Ms. Quigley has been incredibly helpful to the whole Little Run community as virtual education got underway this fall. She has become an expert on new computer programs and interactive tools that have made classroom meetings very engaging for even the youngest students. She is quick to reply to questions from parents (even on weekends!) about computer issues or to provide tips for helping students safely navigate the internet. Ms. Quigley put together a presentation for our November PTA meeting focused on Virtual Learning and Internet Safety. She provided parents with an overview of how teachers are building studentsâ independence with technology and how parents can best help their students succeed. She discussed the importance of modeling good digital citizenship and reinforced for parents all of the resources available. Ms. Quigley has thoroughly supported teachers and families through a very challenging time and we are very grateful!"

Stacie Becker, Bush Hill ES
"Mrs Becker (and Mrs Harding) have been super hero Kindergarten Teachers! I've been "monitoring/assisting" my Kindergartener during this virtual fall and I've just been so impressed at how amazingly patient, kind and just AWESOME Teachers and professionals these ladies are! The entire Bush Hill Elementary Team of teachers, staff and administration have been nothing but incredible during such difficult times. But everyday I've been witness to what I'm so thankful for and more than I could ask for in a virtual classroom for my son and his classmates. Even without the additional monitor to assist in all things digital, these two take on each challenge like literal super heroes and it's been a privilege to be able to be home and hear all that goes on and see what a positive impact they make to each child in their class. This year of course is not ideal for anyone, but I'm thankful for Mrs Stacie Becker and the all the teachers, staff and administrators at Bush Hill Elementary School!"

Ricardo Conner, Transportation - Stonecroft
"Prior to November 16th, I witnessed my supervisor not only patiently leading our great team 42 but he also rolled up his sleeves and worked even harder than we did to keep up with the constant last minute changes in our preparation for phase #5 roll out. We were fully prepped and prepared for the up coming roll out of the next phase of excepting new students. which was to be Monday the 16th of November 20202. Bright and early before sun up On that Monday I was the road supervisor being fairly new he was out there with me assuring my competence and building my confidence. Then it all changed again often after we had just set up all of the routes and contacted the schools. Some changes came minutes after printing the final copy to give to our driver and attendants. For most people this would including me, this could get a little frustrating but not to Ricardo. He is always calm, cool, collected and focused he is the ultimate teacher! His style of leadership takes takes away panic and replaces it with absolute faith that things will work out just the way they where intended to if you are well prepared and you believe in the purpose in which you are here at this very moment. It's a honor to see such a completely positive example of adaptive leadership during these very difficult and challenging times."

Sue Houde, Mountain View HS
"Sue Houde worked with community organizations to arrange for Thanksgiving food "baskets" for families at our school. She was able to arrange baskets for 14% of our student population - which is a very needy population. These food baskets were able to serve additional students/families above the county holiday program. Not only did Sue arrange the community financial support, but she also went to the store and bought the items and arranged the "baskets". She also worked with staff to identify students in need and then contacted those families to arrange pick up or delivery of the "baskets". Thanks to Sue's time and effort, we were able to provide additional food support to our families during this Thanksgiving break!"

Dan Phillips, Sharon Hickey, Janice Suitte and Barbara King, Providence ES
"I would like to give a round of applause to our administrative team and administrative assistant. Throughout this whole COVID situation they have been there to help us navigate this unprecedented, unknown time. In this time of great uncertainty they have been there for me and for all the staff at PES. They have consistently been patient, positive and hopeful. They have met all staff members where they are listening to worries and concerns, encouraging, offering insights and advice, celebrating successes, and, most important, showing that they care. They have done their best to keep us updated, troubleshoot as needed, and keep things as normal as possible. Their expectations have been realistic and their support has been constant. Although all the above have been obvious to all the staff at PES, I know they have been doing an incredible amount behind the scenes. There have been endless meetings, thousands (probably!) of emails not to mention phone calls and everything else needed to keep the school building clean, safe and ready to receive students when the time comes. Dan, Sharon, Janice, and Barb, I am so thankful to have such CARING leaders as all of you and am so glad to be at Providence during this time. I know I speak for all the staff in saying thank you for all you have done and all you continue to do!"

Andrea Harmon, Lake Braddock SS
"Ms. Harmon is the chorus teacher at Lake Braddock. I wanted to pass on how much Ms. Harmon has been doing to help create community amongst the kids and plan special virtual events for them at this time and what a game changer she has been for many of our kids right now. She's amazing, even starting this summer with a virtual chorus boot camp and trying to build community for the chorus kids. And she's continued right on since the first day of school. Not only did she do a ton of work to create an amazing virtual Dessert on Broadway concert, including getting the kids to learn choreography and group numbers and make sure all the kids were included, she has gone WAY above and beyond to find opportunities for the kids to virtually perform as well as virtually hang out together, including virtual movie nights, virtual game time, virtual buddy lunches, and much more. It has helped the kids bond and find some community in a way that is inclusive of everyone. While many kids are getting together informally in their "pods", Ms. Harmon has found a way to make sure those kids who don't have pods also have a way to connect socially with their classmates. She truly seems to understand the social and emotional toll this has taken on our kids and gone out of her way to help give these kids something. And she understands for the seniors this is the last chance they will get. There is no "just wait til next year" for them. While performing alone and recording videos is difficult for some kids and not as good for these kids as being able to perform together, having so many opportunities for the kids to perform has given them some incentive to keep practicing and watching the shows she creates with their videos gives them something to look forward to. I cannot speak more highly of how hard she has worked for her chorus kids and the many ways she has gone above and beyond for them."

Mountain View High School has an older student population, but Peggy understood that small gestures go a long way. Pete Garvey, a social studies teacher, has stated that Peggy is "the best instructional assistant ever." Pete explained how Peggy supports in a co-teaching role in his classes that they are teamed in. Pete has also shared how Peggy mailed students in their Success Prep class, juju beans and toothpicks in advance to support a team building lesson that was a tremendous success. Susan Byrd and Anna Kvartunas, Lake Braddock SS
"I spent the last few days with Anna Kvartunas and Susan Byrd, teaching concurrently from their physical classrooms. Their people-first approach to our current educational model made for an absolutely meaningful experience with their students. It is really, really hard to teach students at home and in the classroom, and watching these teachers perform with grace and savvy was so inspiring. Not only were we able to build strong relationships between students and the library through this experience, we were really successful in helping them find great new books to read. Even beyond that, they taught me how to do this successfully, with infinite patience and generosity. I feel so lucky that my first experience teaching concurrently was with such amazing educators. This week was a master class in flexibility, kindness and resourcefulness. I think every single educator in our building is an amazing human person, but there is something extra special and extra wonderful about people who go into special education."

We are truly lucky to have her here at Olde Creek!"

Tara Boone, Rose Hill ES
"Tara is our Instructional Coach. The last 2 weeks she has been working with me on problem solving with my first graders. Teaching through a small screen has been a challenge. She and I have seen some amazing strategies used by our first graders. She taught them how to use their cameras to record their work. The kids love it! I love seeing their smiles and confidence grow each day they work. They are going to become very competent problem solvers and Tara Boone is a major reason why. She comes into our classroom virtually and becomes a dynamic and active participant. She has pulled students into a breakout room to help them. This is one small example of how she makes our school brighter and our students more successful. We are blessed!"

Jennifer Clark, Rolling Valley ES
"I want to thank Ms. Clark for incorporating National Princess Day into our class today. My daughter has had a lot of ups and downs with virtual learning, and National Princess Day was a great opportunity to raise her spirits. When she initially reached out to me, Ms. Clark asked if I had any ideas for stories or songs to share - but then I had the totally out of the box idea of bringing a princess to class to read her story. I wasn't sure if it was allowed, but Ms. Clark was enthusiastic! I set up the experience, and Ms. Clark invited other classrooms to join us as well. Elsa came to visit today - she read a story, sang some of her songs from Frozen 2, and talked with some of the students and teachers. It was an absolutely amazing experience! My daughter's joy and smiles throughout were infectious, and even now - a few hours later - she's still so, so happy. Moments like this really help our daughter's mental health, and I really appreciate that this need is recognized and supported. Thank you!"

Johanna Meadows, Gatehouse Administration Center
"If I don't know an answer to an FCPS question, Johanna is without a doubt the first person I ask. I could use all these adjectives to describe her like "amazing" or "fantastic" or "wonderful", but nothing ever truly comes close enough to accurately describe her as a person and a colleague. An employee recently reached out to me with questions regarding her retirement date changing and wasn't receiving the assistance she needed from the appropriate office. Knowing absolutely nothing about this particular situation, I asked Johanna for assistance, expecting her to give me reliable point of contact to direct my questions to. But she just took care of it! She asked for info from the appropriate people, had Verifications send documents the employee, and received the confirmation that the employee needed. All by herself! She just fully took a confusing situation off my plate and handled it. I'm completely mind blown. She's in a brand new position with more responsibilities, but her generosity knows no bounds. I'm absolutely so grateful for Johanna and her guidance since I've joined FCPS; I don't think I'd be as successful in my role without her."

Roopa Gundapaneni and Anara Kakar, Westfield HS
"From past few months Roopa Gundapaneni, production kitchen manager and Anara Kakar, cost control manager at Westfield HS cafeteria have been working diligently hard to support the Westfield pyramid production team in preparing and delivering meals to the FCPS community. Due to their sheer contribution in willing to work beyond their capacity, they have created an outstanding food services team. They overcame many hurdles like addition of new meal sites and buses, limited storage space in the kitchen, adjusting daily meal counts, learning all the meal requirements as the programs like supper and pm snacks were added and many moreâŠ..They went above and beyond the call of duty and exhibited patience, in a positive manner and always went about doing their duties with a friendly smile. Every major roadblock was met with determination and resolution. They ensured all tasks were completed in a timely and thorough manner. Their dedication, professionalism, and initiative continue to make a major contribution to the success of Food and Nutrition Services. They are extremely easy to work with and I greatly appreciate their production skills and hard work. Isabel Diaz, Gatehouse Administration Center
Please consider this correspondence as one of recommendation for promotion or at minimum, commendation for Isabel D. Diaz, an interpreter for FCPS. Earlier this school year, I had to write fifteen Special Education IEP addenda as a Special Education teacher due to the COVID shutdown of in-person schooling. It was a process which took several weeks, and eleven of these fifteen addenda legally required an FCPS Interpreter to translate for parents. Had it not been for the expertise and professionalism of Ms. Diaz, I would not have been able to properly do my job. It is employees such as Ms. Diaz, that make FCPS a cutting edge school system.

Kaitlyn Huizing, Westfield HS
"When I shared the idea of a virtual high five, a way for students to recognize staff for the incredible work they are doing with distance learning, Kaitlyn jumped at the chance to set it up and make this happen! She immediately created the form, a plan to post to Schoology and advertise to students via SEL period lessons and WestfieldLive. Her enthusiasm and follow through means that over the last week, over 450 individual high fives have been submitted and emailed out to teachers and other school staff (and responses are still rolling in!) Students are submitting specific feedback about what they love about the classes and what teachers are doing, encouragement and so much positivity. As we've worked to send these out, teachers have replied that they were moved to tears, that this was EXACTLY what they needed on a day that was a struggle or at the end of a long week, and just this morning a teacher emailed this feedback "This was a great idea, whoever came up with it. It is good for the soul to hear something positive." Kaitlyn's commitment to ensuring students' voices are heard and staff are supported is something we all benefit from here at Westfield!"

Her communication with parents is stellar, and often demonstrated just how well she knew her students through specific requests for support. My child grew immensely under her tutelage not just from an academic standpoint, but in personal confidence, grit, and adaptability. There is no denying that covid-19 resulted in many unanticipated and unwanted complications, but Miss Curran successfully navigated those challenging times and went well above and beyond her official role to keep students connected. "I want to shoutout my colleague, Elva Liagouris. Being one of two new additions to the Office of Community Use, Elva has been a well-informed leader. She has taken on the role of trainer in addition to her daily duties as a Community Use Specialist. We are a smaller team, so, having two ânewbiesâ has been quite the adjustment. Throughout this adjusting, Elva has remained a calm, patient, and goal-oriented teammate. The end goal: to have us up to speed with the daily processes of the Community Use Office, which is no small feat. Elva has had to train us in the disbursement and reconciliation process, invoicing of events and closing out, pushing, and posting payments, understanding LTC and Cultural Schools, teaching us FOCUS, FSD Finance and CashPro applications, the list goes on. It has not gone unnoticed how much time and effort she puts in to training us. She holds herself to a high standard and wants to put forth her best work and provide to us her vast knowledge base for all âthingsâ community use. She assessed each of the 3 classrooms to see where she would be of most help and got to work with a specific student who was having a little difficulty acclimating to participating in school in the building. Ms. Dunn's calm demeanor and willingness to sit with the student and slowly work up to academic work showed that Ms. Dunn knew the student's frame of mind and comfort were the priority. On the second day, Ms. Dunn again stepped in - this time for a staff member who was out of school and facilitated an IEP meeting for the teacher. Helen Canepa, Gatehouse Administration Center
"Helen Canepa goes above and beyond to inform FCPS employees of virtual fitness and wellness classes that help us stay healthy, reduce stress, and get stronger. She is dedicated to sharing the monthly fitness classes sign up links; compiling word documents containing the links to the recorded classes, making them easily accessible; sending out the survey after each class for our feedback, etc. Her attention to detail is amazing. There are countless employees who sign up for these classes, yet she noticed that my email address was not listed properly on one of the forms I submitted to sign up for a class and made sure to email me the meeting link. She is a great role model by attending these classes and even checks in with us if we have signed up for a class and aren't logged in to make sure we did receive the meeting link. On behalf of all FCPS employees who have benefitted from attending these wellness classes, and those who will sign up for classes in the future, we are so grateful for Helen. Anthony Copeland, Westfield HS
"During these unprecedented times, true character and leadership has become obvious at Westfield High School. Since the emergency closure last March, Dr. Copeland, our principal, has made it a priority to regularly communicate with our staff and community via weekly email messages, faculty meetings and town hall meetings. His heartfelt messages of support and encouragement have helped us stay the course during these uncertain times. His open-door policy has remained unchanged for staff, parents, and students, despite not having all the answers. Faced with another uncertain school year, his unrelenting determination and unwavering support continues through messages of encouragement and visits to virtual classrooms. He understands and respects the monumental task taken by our teachers to reinvent curriculum and maintain student engagement to ensure continued quality education. Dr. Copeland and his administrative team also participated in several town hall meetings, knowing full well the challenges and emotions expressed by our community as county directives continue to change. He understands the importance of hearing our community and demonstrates professionalism and compassion when interpreting the latest recommendations. He has always given a well thought out explanation after careful consideration of all the underlying factors. Even planned days off fall short as he continues to work tirelessly to ensure students and staff feel supported. It is through his ability to listen and respect the feelings of others that I clearly recognize strong character and leadership. A strong leader does not need to provide answers to a complex situation but maintain integrity and remain truthful and consistent in their actions. This has been clearly displayed by my principal throughout the pandemic closure! It is with grace, respect, honesty, and hard work that I define a strong leader, which I believe has been shown by my principal, Dr. Anthony E. Copeland."

Yanneth McCoy, Daniels Run ES
"Daniels Run has the best parent liaison EVER!!!!! It would be impossible to list all the many, many ways that Yanneth McCoy supports ALL of our DRES families. Mrs. McCoy has gone over and above often working many, many hours beyond the ones she is paid for to help and support our families. She has gone to homes to assist with MiFi's, she has assisted families with available resources in the community including finding transportation so that our students could attend the Connected Care program from Fairfax City. Mrs. McCoy has assisted our ESOL team with helping them make connections with families to ensure student attendance for our Monday level 1 program as well as ANY of the additional opportunities that may be available to them. Mrs. McCoy has assisted me personally with translating when I have needed it. Mrs. McCoy is a tireless advocate constantly following up with parents to make sure that they understand documentation that may be required or instructions that they are asked to follow and often does this outside of the business day. Yanneth does this all with a smile and with such grace. As I said there are so many, many ways in which she has helped families since the pandemic began I couldn't possibly list them all. I know our laptop distribution, school supply distribution, food distribution, Beep and Greet, and absolutely all of the activities that have taken place would not have been the success they were without her support. Did I mention that we are one of two schools she supports? I know the other school (Lees Corner) is just as grateful to her. Mrs. McCoy is the true definition of the FCPS Cares program and is such an asset not only to Daniels Run and Lees Corner but to all of FCPS. We don't know what we would do without her and couldn't be more honored and humbled that she has chosen to be a Daniels Run Dragon. The new 'virtual-HR' system for background checks is wonderful, but there have been a few âstarts and stopsâ. "Mr. Wickham has always been very passionate about whatâs best for students. When it was announced that we would have a new 4th period advisory block, he enthusiastically volunteered for the Advisory Curriculum Subcommittee to develop high-quality SEL choice session plans for all teachers to use with students in 7th to 9th grade. He is a strong believer that kids learn best when they have strong relationships with their teachers and saw this as an opportunity to facilitate that. The session plans he has created focus on helping kids learn how to develop and manage the relationships in their lives. Since the school year began, many teachers have reported that the advisory period has been the best way to develop connections between students and with teachers and Mr. Wickhamâs session plans are a big driver of that success. Thank you, Mr. Wickham!!!"

Jennifer Cortesi, Lake Braddock SS
"Mrs. Cortesi has always been a teacher who develops a strong connection to her students and understands them all by name and by need. In a year that has challenged educators to entirely reshape how we educate students, she has given even more of her time and effort on top of it to develop high-quality SEL session plans for all 7th - 9th grade teachers to use at Lake Braddock Secondary School. She saw value in our new 4th period advisory block and possessed a desire for it to be the best that it could be for students. She volunteered for the Advisory Curriculum Subcommittee to provide all teachers with various choice session plans and resources they could use to promote responsible decision-making in 12- to 15-year-old students. One of the advisory lessons helped students organize their virtual materials and develop a digital assignment planner to keep track of their work. Her effort has been invaluable to our students and teachers and her session plans have received high praise from others. Thank you, Mrs. Cortesi!!!"

"Mrs. Albertson is a phenomenal educator. Mrs. Albertson taught both our two sons, and each experience has been amazing. This year has been a challenge for everyone, but Mrs. Albertson brings the joy and compassion to everything she does. For the first time in his life my son loves math. And told me âMrs. Albertson is the best math teacher Iâve ever hadâ. I am so grateful to Mrs. Albertson and her passion for teaching."

Peter McDonough, Chantilly HS
"Mr. McDonough is a nice and professional gentleman. During my senior year of high school, I came to him to address my concerns about how I was being treated by a student. He pulled one the student aside to talk to us. The student stopped the name-calling towards me. Mr. McDonough deserves a raise and we need more caring people like him."
