October 24, 2024 School Board Meeting Highlights

Meeting Opening

At 7:05 p.m., the School Board Regular Meeting was called to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, a performance of the National Anthem by the Glasgow Middle School Trio under the direction of Caleb Caldwell, and a special performance by the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Namaste Club under the direction of Patricia Lister - in honor of Hindu American Heritage Month.

The School Board approved proclamations honoring Student Athletics and Activities Month, Annandale High School 70th Anniversary, Fairview Elementary School 125th Anniversary, and Hindu American Heritage Month.

The School Board honored the following schools who achieved recognition from the US Department of Education or Virginia Board of Education for academic achievement:

• National Blue Ribbon Award for Exemplary High Performing School: Spring Hill ES
• 2024 Exemplar Award for Highest Achievement: Sangster ES
• 2024 Exemplar Award for Highest Achievement: Thomas Jefferson HS for Science & Technology
• 2024 Exemplar Award for Continuous Improvement: John R. Lewis HS
• 2024 Exemplar Award for Continuous Improvement: South Lakes HS
• 2024 Exemplar Award for Continuous Improvement: West Potomac HS

Community Participation

The School Board heard from 9 members of the public during Community Participation.

Student Representative Matters

Student Representative Megan Sawant presented Student Representative Matters to the School Board.

Action Items

The School Board approved an amendment to the Strategic Governance Manual regarding proclamations, certified Election Results and recognized the Exclusive Bargaining Agent for the Administrators and Supervisors bargaining unit, and amended policies and the Strategic Governance Manual to address protected rights of exclusive bargaining representatives.

Strategic Goal Report

Superintendent Reid presented the SY2024-25 report on Strategic Plan Goal 1: Strong Start: Pre-K-12.  The School Board approved the Goal 1 Strategic Plan Report for SY 2024-25. The School Board last reviewed a Goal 1 report on December 14, 2023.

Presentations to the School Board

Dr. Reid presented  Academic Matters on the 2023-2024 Fairfax County Youth Survey.

Dr. Reid presented Superintendent Matters to the School Board.

Consent Agenda

The School Board approved minutes of the October 10, 2024 meeting, appointments to the Facilities Planning Advisory Council, additional Committee appointments, the Monthly Employee Separation Report, an adjustment to the Student Representative's compensation, and several contracts.

Meeting Closing

Comprehensive Planning and Development Committee Chair Mr. Dunne and Governance Committee Chair Ms. Lady gave Committee Reports.

Finally, the School Board regular meeting concluded with Board Matters. The Regular Meeting adjourned at 11:04 p.m.
