February 6 Letter from Region 3 Assistant Superintendent Nardos King

Process Outlined for Renaming Robert E. Lee High School

Dear Lee High School Pyramid,

In October 2019, the Fairfax County School Board revised the policy and regulation for naming and renaming school facilities.

School Policy 8170.7 states that “the School Board may consider a change in the name of an existing school or facility to ensure an inclusive, respectful learning environment as outlined in our adopted One Fairfax Policy or when the Board deems it appropriate.”

At tonight’s School Board Forum, School Board Member Tamara Derenak Kaufax and School Board Member-at-Large Karen Keys-Gamarra requested the School Board consider beginning the process to rename Robert E. Lee High School.  The School Board indicated support for moving forward with a proposal to rename the school and will schedule it as New Business at its February 20 School Board Meeting.

The process to rename a school facility is outlined in Regulation 8170 Procedures for Naming School Facilities and Dedicating Areas of School Facilities or Grounds and includes the community engagement process.

Once the proposal is introduced as New Business, a month long period of public comment will begin which will include a community meeting and a public hearing before the School Board.

We will continue to update you on the process and the dates of the community meeting and public hearing in the near future.

Sincerely,
Nardos E. King, Ed.D.
Assistant Superintendent
Region 3
