FCPS Cares of the Month Recipients

Central Office

Dawn Cochran, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"We had a class of preschool students returning for in-person instruction on 12/10. I realized about an hour prior to the students arriving that I had not notified transportation the day before about the students returning. I called our transportation office and Dawn answered the phone. I explained the situation and Dawn handled it with the utmost professionalism and care for our students. Within 10 minutes she had arranged for drivers to pick up our students and get them to school. Dawn is an excellent example of a caring culture and I want to publicly recognize her dedication to FCPS and our students!"

- Chris Smith, Daniels Run ES

Region 1

Christina Kern, Crossfield ES

"Mrs. Kern was one of the first teachers to volunteer as a pilot program to bring low-incidence/self-contained special needs classrooms and students back to in-person learning. She goes above and beyond to engage the students. She made hard-copy binders of every subject covered in a virtual environment so the kids had worksheets and handouts to touch, feel, and write on and even went as far as hand-delivering them to student homes. She practiced mask-wearing in the virtual environment every day to normalize and desensitize sensory sensitive kids to wearing them so they’d be ready for in-person. She developed and delivered all of her virtual instruction without an IA, teaching to 8+ kids and ensuring full and equal participation. When new students, triplets, arrived at our school and they were unable to sign on at the scheduled times due to working parents, she had a person 1:3 session for just them at 4:30 pm after a very full workday. She fiercely advocates for our students, and she cares about their needs and well-being (moreso than we have ever experienced in our 15 years as special needs parents of two kids). Once the County resumed in-person for Group 3 students, she had her classroom fully readied for the new learning environment. She simultaneously delivers in-person and virtual instruction for 3+ hours per day, all while working on two laptops, a smartboard, and a desktop overhead camera. She ensures no non-verbal or soft-spoken child is spoken over or overlooked, as every student takes turns reading or answering questions sequentially. She accommodates multi-modal forms of communication, from AAC devices, iPads, keyboards, letterboards, etc. to give equal opportunity to speaking and non-speaking students. She is a dedicated and seemingly tireless example of what an exceptional special needs teacher looks like, and our students are so very lucky to have her as their ally."

Dave Wall, Justice HS

"Safety and Security Assistant Dave Wall has demonstrated his dedication, resourcefulness, and attention to detail during this challenging period of SY 20-21. He was instrumental in helping to develop a system of effective and efficient hallway traffic flow for students and staff to maintain adequate social distancing. He took on the task of the appropriate placement of signage to identify the direction of travel to be used by students and staff when moving throughout the building. He was an integral part of the team developing the flow in and out of the cafeteria as well as seating during lunches meeting health department requirements for room capacity and social distancing. Dave Wall has consistently been a valued member of the Justice High School Safety and Security Team."

- Luther Ivery, Justice HS

Dave Wall, Justice HS

"Dave Wall has worked tirelessly to ensure that we have the proper safety and security protocols in place for when our staff and students return to the building. Dave has led efforts to place signage throughout the school and assist in preparing spaces such as the cafeteria and auditorium for students' return. Dave's hard work is greatly appreciated."

- Michelle Campiglia, Justice HS

Region 3

Brian Welfle and Ann Jopke, Hollin Meadows ES

"Our HMES music teacher Mr. Brian Welfle went above and beyond to strengthen our school community and bring holiday cheer to our students on Tuesday night. Mr. Welfle dressed as Welf on the Shelf and hosted our virtual bingo and holiday singalong. We had over 70 households join the fun online. He was critical in promoting the online event, drawing in many of our families who don't typically attend virtual events. He mastered the technology and kept the event moving seamlessly with excitement, laughter, singing, and live music (he even composed original lyrics for our 12 Months of 2020 song!) Mr. Welfle epitomizes teacher dedication and makes learning and community building a fun and uplifting experience. Mr. Welfle rocks!"

- A Hollin Meadows ES Parent

"My children have both been a bit discouraged lately, having to attend school virtually and stay in the house most of the time. They absolutely perked up during the recent HMES Welf on the Shelf Bingo/Sing-along night expertly hosted by Mr. Welfle and Ms. Jopke, and even Mom and Dad joined in on the holiday fun. I haven't heard them laugh like that in ages, and they were able to interact with their beloved HMES classmates. THANK YOU to these dedicated HMES teachers who took time out of their very busy schedules to share some holiday joy with their community. It's been a highlight of our holiday season, no question!"

- a Hollin Meadows ES Parent

"Both of these specials teachers (Mr. Welfle for Music and Ms. Jopke for PE) are always supporting extracurricular activities at the school. Last night (12/16) at Virtual Bingo Night and Holiday Sing-along both hosted the event. Their professionalism, fun with students, and excitement for these get-togethers is always expressed. They love their work and the kids, plus go beyond to connect families to the school. Thanking them for all they do."

-  a Hollin Meadows ES Parent

"Ms. Jopke sets the standard for teachers!  In addition to serving as the teacher liaison on the PTA Board, Ms. Jopke actively participates in events that strengthen student and family engagement and community building.  On Tuesday night, Ms. Jopke mc'ed HMES' first virtual bingo and holiday singalong. She established the sequence of events and moderated the technical forum. She had over 70 households join the event and seamlessly managed student participation. She was clear, empathetic, organized, and lively. She kept the event on schedule and the fun flowing! We are so lucky to count Ms. Jopke among our Hollin Meadows teachers."

- A Hollin Meadows ES Parent

"Ms. Jopke is an exceptional and caring teacher. Recently, she and Mr. Welfle conducted a successful virtual bingo and holiday sing along for almost 70 students and parents. It was so uplifting, there were laughs and smiles galore. Thank you so much. Ms. Jopke and Mr. Welfle."

Mike Craven, Burke School

"Mike Craven is an exceptional person. He represents the heart and soul of our building. Mike worked tirelessly to manage and collect over 500 items for our annual Angel Tree whereby we were able to make the Christmas wishes of about 20 of our neediest families come true. He personally filled up a minivan of presents and needed household supplies for a family who has experienced devastating hardship and the parents had told the children that "because of the pandemic, Santa has to stay home this year". Mike Craven is a selfless and most giving human being and is most deserving of an FCPS Cares award."

- Debbie Strayhorn, Burke School

"Mike Craven is the heart of Burke School. He has such a passion for our students and their families. As a new part of the Burke school family, I was overwhelmed with joy to see the effort Mr. Craven put in to ensure our families had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration. Mr. Craven and his team organized the collection and distribution of all the necessary items for a delicious holiday meal, even including gift cards to purchase any additional items for more than 20 families. Meals went to not only students and their families, but to the dedicated and hard-working bus drivers. Then again, in December, Mr. Craven and his team began the daunting task of playing Santa for families in need. He organized and collected over 400 items to help our students and their families have a wonderful holiday. As I marveled at this selfless task, I was told that he has been doing this for years. My heart was filled with joy as I pictured the faces of our students and their families when they received all the wonderful gifts. This holiday, even in the midst of a pandemic when so many of our families are suffering, every Burke student will find something special under their tree thanks to Mr. Craven."

- Susan Wertheim, Burke School

Region 5

Kaitlin Donohue – Eagle View Elementary

Kaitlin is a sixth-grade teacher that has worked tirelessly to support the social-emotional wellbeing of our students during this unprecedented time. She has created interactive, highly engaging lessons, she frequently has one on one check-in with students to ensure they are doing okay, and she frequently works with students in small groups to provide that extra support, time, and attention. Kaitlyn is frequently checking in on colleagues and shares notes of gratitude, motivational quotes, and little pick me up messages, that truly brightens your day. She regularly goes above and beyond for her team, students, and families. Her authenticity, genuine care, and consideration shine through, even in this virtual setting.

Other FCPS Cares of the Month Recipients

Melanie Dash, Hayfield SS

"Melanie Dash is one of the kindest teachers I’ve ever known. I was having trouble explaining an economic concept from a math perspective to my students and I reached out to Melanie for help. I emailed her late on a Sunday night and within an hour she sent me a perfect explanation and a pdf that explained how to do the math, as well as the math language that kids would know that would help it all make sense. The next day, thanks to her help, I was a better teacher and was able to help my kids understand. The other day I was asking for her help with a VPN issue I was having, and I casually mentioned that my car broke down that morning. She immediately asked if I needed to be picked up so I could take the laptop to school. These are just two of many examples of how Melanie always goes out of her way to help others. Her students love her and she’s a phenomenal colleague."

- Brian Gillespie, Hayfield SS

--------

Sam Melton, Heidi Cox, and Alicia Day Javkhlan, Hollin Meadows ES

"This is long overdue, but our gratitude is no less heartfelt. Over the summer after a tough sudden switch to virtual school and the end of the year, Ms. Melton, Ms. Cox, and Ms. DJ went well above and beyond for our daughter’s whole class and continued to hold virtual sessions into the summer. Our daughter SO looked forward to the sessions each week and they made a huge difference to her morale and her routine. We are so thankful for the extra time and effort they put in, and we are humbled that they cared so much to give the kids that time. Our deep thanks!"

- a Hollin Meadows ES Parent

--------

Andrea Edmonson, Bonnie Brae ES

"Andrea Edmonson is a substitute teacher who has been filling in for 4th-grade teacher Sierra Johnson since school began in September. She has gone above and beyond to engage every single student during virtual learning. She hosts a Lunch Bunch twice a week during her lunchtime. My son has never been so excited about an optional social time, as he is about Lunch Bunch on Fridays. I believe this is a direct result of the classroom climate and culture that Ms. Edmonson has created. She reaches out and engages with every student. She challenges students yet respects their boundaries. She acknowledges and celebrates differences daily, which has created an inclusive community where students are comfortable and excited to be a part of. She has communicated everything I could possibly need to know and more in a timely, efficient manner. Any question I ever have about anything can always be answered by reading the rest of her Monday e-mails. She has made my son's 4th-grade year amazing. His Grandmother and baby brother have especially enjoyed morning meetings and story time! We have thoroughly enjoyed having Ms. Edmonson as a substitute teacher, she has made a daily difference in our lives!"

Her professionalism and expert knowledge of the regulations and laws governing special education keep our department running smoothly, and our relationships with other schools and departments strong. Most importantly, Ms. Hampton-Loomis is a teacher. She ensures that our staff is educated and informed when it comes to working with our students and our community. Judy Dixon, Thanh Chung, Dien Trang, Long Nguyen, Ena Guerrero, and Ana Mata, Providence ES

"Our Building Supervisor and the custodial team always put the health of our community and the appearance of our school first. They have worked tirelessly over the past eight months to ensure that our building is ready when our students are able to return. They are all hard workers, and when the building preparation was complete, they were eager to find more to do. One afternoon, I casually asked if they were allowed to touch up paint. In the weeks that followed, they touched up or repainted almost our whole building! It has lifted all of our spirits to see how great their work looks, and I think it will really feel like the first day in a new school when we are all able to be back together. Well done, Team! We are proud of you every day and we greatly appreciate the pride you showed in making Providence look great for our community!"

- Dan Phillips, Providence ES

--------

James Chesson, Woodson HS

--------

Penny Gaddis, Lewis HS

"I would like to nominate Ms. Gaddis, AKA Ms. Penny for the FCPS Cares Award. Ms. Penny is an Edmentum support staff member, a teacher for the in-school suspension classroom, and a friendly face for the students and she is a mentor. From the moment she became a part of the Lewis High School family in 2015, she has displayed a level of dedication and commitment to students that you don’t see in all. Because of her caring nature, she has mentored many students under the auspices of MentorWorks and has also informally mentored students who have been sent to her classroom as an alternative place to complete their work. When I call her about a student who is struggling, she always says, "yes Ms. Fulmore, bring them down". She greets each student with a smile, a listening ear, and meets them where they are. Needless to say, those students find their way back to Ms. Penny for continued support. Ms. Penny takes students “under her wing” and teaches them how to fly. She requires hard work, good attendance, and positive behavior from her mentees and all students.  She truly knows how to connect with the students and makes her classroom a welcoming place to be."

- Marcella Fulmore, Lewis HS

--------

I am so appreciative of her extra effort, especially on the last day before Winter Break!"

Robin Kline, Sleepy Hollow ES

"Robin is our library assistant. She continues to keep our library running and students reading. Not only does she sit outside in the freezing cold for Curbside book pickup, but she also heads over to Willston each week to pass out books to our students there. She goes above and beyond all the time. Just recently she took some students their edible gingerbread men knowing they probably wouldn't be able to pick them up."

- Anne Sumser, Sleepy Hollow ES

--------

Les Baer, South County HS

"Les Baer has been a fantastic addition to the South County community and Social Studies department this first semester of the school year. He came in as a long-term substitute during a time that is challenging for all teachers and he hit the ground running. He is all about taking care of people and their needs to be successful whether that be a student, parent, or colleague. He has not only supported the Social Studies department but other facets of the school as well stepping into meetings last minute that needed a teacher present. As such, he has gone above and beyond our expectations for substitute teachers. We wish him well on his next stop!  Thanks, Les!"

- Jeremiah Caven, South County HS

--------

Pat Zook, Chantilly HS

"Mr. Zook volunteered to come to school to help move over 15 vehicles that needed to be moved before a roofing project could start at the school. Many of the vehicles needed some TLC before they would start and Mr. Zook worked to put air in tires, scrape ice, jump batteries, and move vehicles to another location on school grounds. As a special education support teacher, Mr. Zook has had a vital role in the success of students in several of our programs. Mr. Zook always puts students first and works collaboratively with teachers and students to ensure student success. He has done a truly amazing job with his students and I appreciate his willingness to still help the school by moving all of these vehicles."

- Scott Settar, Chantilly Academy

--------

Kenny Brown, Chantilly Academy

"Mr. Brown worked tirelessly during his planning day to come to school to move vehicles in the parking lot to allow a roofing project to begin over winter break. Many of the vehicles needed some TLC before they would start and Mr. Brown worked to put air in tires, scrape ice, jump batteries, and move vehicles to another location on school grounds. I know how busy Mr. Brown has been while teaching concurrently and now 100% virtual again with a very hands-on curriculum. He has done a truly amazing job with his students and I appreciate his willingness to still help the school by moving all of these vehicles."

- Scott Settar, Chantilly Academy

--------

Daely Castillo, Falls Church HS

"Daely Castillo is an administrative assistant in the attendance office at FCHS who "officially" has mentored students for six years. Caring, patient, and fluent in Spanish, Daely has been paired with ESOL Level 1/2 students, usually for multiple years. Daely is generous, persistent, and creative in her support; she builds trust with her mentees and their families and breaks down hurdles to learning. From tutoring during lunch each week, to helping complete free/reduced meal applications, to facilitating student/parent conversations, Daely identifies and embraces all interventions. As a result, her mentees feel a strong connection, often visiting her daily and bringing friends to her for guidance. With Daely’s support, her students have seen graduation as more possible, an accomplishment that often is the first within their family. With Daely by their side, these students and their families know that they have an extra special ally, advocate, and guide accompanying them. We thank Daely for going above and beyond as a caring adult for our FCHS community!"

- Shannon Stapleton and Andrea Chottiner, Falls Church HS

--------

- Patricia Trillet, Louise Archer ES

--------

Maricel Fernandez, Chantilly HS

"Ms. Fernandez is a professional woman. She and Ms. Blue help me with my Spanish. When I came to Chantilly High 3 years ago with my mother to re-enroll in the STEP Program, she was welcoming to me. I even took her advice when she said that having my keys around my neck was unprofessional by putting my keys in my pocket. She deserves a raise and we need more caring people like her."

- a Chantilly HS Student

--------

Michelle Siraj, South Lakes HS

"Michelle is in her first year of teaching high school, and she has been working hard to make personal connections with her students virtually. She had one student in particular who was struggling to stay engaged with online instruction, and his mom shared that the virtual experience had been difficult for him. Michelle offered to meet him at Starbucks to have a face-to-face conversation with him. His mom had shared with Michelle that he was passionate about fighting racial inequality and had donated summer earnings to an organization focused on combatting injustice. When they met, Michelle brought him a t-shirt representing equality. Since the meeting, the student has been turning on his camera and microphone in class and participating regularly. Michelle truly went above and beyond in this situation and made a difference for this student."

- Jill Pellerin, South Lakes HS

--------

Ann Jopke, Hollin Meadows ES

"Ms. Jopke is the teacher liaison to our school PTA and she has really helped to make all of the virtual meetings and events a success this year. She's moderated PTA Meetings, expertly using the BBCU interface so that they run smoothly. She's also just generally an extremely positive & engaged staff member. She and her co-teacher Ms. Smith have organized a weekly Monday Move It for all the grades and this week, she also served as MC for the PTA's virtual BINGO Night & Holiday Singalong (one of our school's favorite traditions) and helped make the event a fun, community-building activity in a year when we've all missed out on those special HMES traditions."

-  a Hollin Meadows ES Parent

--------

Brian Welfle, Hollin Meadows, ES

"Our school PTA organized a virtual BINGO Night & Holiday Singalong (one of our school's favorite traditions), hosted by "Welf on the Shelf." Mr. Welfle really went above & beyond to make it  a fun, community-building activity in a year when we've all missed out on those special HMES traditions."

-  a Hollin Meadows ES Parent

--------

Carolina Bermudez, Laurel Ridge ES

"Carolina invited me into her classroom today to read to her students. It was clear from the moment I entered that Carolina has created a very strong and safe classroom community. Every student knew exactly what to do, participated, and volunteered to share with one another. It was incredible to see what Carolina has done in a virtual environment with her students. We often hear how challenging this environment is to engage students in, but there was no lack of engagement evident in her classroom. Thank you Carolina for your hard work and for working miracles to keep our students learning!"

- Jean Wyche, Laurel Ridge ES

--------

Christine Sheehan, Vienna ES

"For the second year, my son has Ms. Sheehan as his teacher, and I couldn't be happier. Ms. Sheehan can do it all even in a pandemic and sometimes while holding a brand new baby! She's organized, thoughtful, timely, and patient. While I'm sad that my son has missed out on in-person interactions with his peers during this virtual learning year, I'm so grateful that he is not missing out on excellent academic instruction and a warm relationship with his teacher. Thank you, Ms. Sheehan!"

- a Vienna ES Parent

- Helen Larkin, Westlawn ES

--------

Stephanie Pepper, Evan Kalinkos, Matt Bower, Patrick Murphy, Donald Duffy, Charita Eley Frost MS

"These amazing educators have done an amazing job transitioning to virtual education. There are so many outstanding examples to point to, but I want to focus on assessment. The school has changed in these past months and these teachers have revamped and reimagined assessment along with it. Their performance assessments are engaging, inventive, and truly let students show what they know using their historical thinking skills. I am consistently inspired by the new ideas, reflection on student feedback, and willingness to try new things. They keep student learning at the center of their work and never forget to put relationships and real-world learning before grades and surface-level assessment."

- Caitlin Quincy, Frost MS

--------

Amanda Lockhart, Ann Hardman, Linda Shannon, Emily Borders, and Kate Willard, Frost MS

"This wonderful group of staff members supports our students in the Cat B department. They are amazing teachers and leaders every day, but they really outdid themselves when asked to return to the building with their students earlier this year. They have had to take on so much extra work, be so flexible, and generally go above and beyond for Frost's students. In this constantly changing landscape, they have rolled with all the virtual, in-person, and concurrent punches. I don't know how they do it, but I am constantly impressed! They truly put the students at the center of their work every day!"

- Caitlin Quincy, Frost MS

--------

Naila Chowdhury, Chantilly HS

"Ms. Chowdhury supports our very large special education department. Over the past three years, she has single-handedly kept the special education office running smoothly- through changes in administrators, department chairs, teachers, and instructional assistants. She has been exceeding patient teaching new employees the myriad components of special education and supporting the office that is responsible for our 350+students with disabilities as well as the 30+ teachers in the department. Naila is kind, thorough, and diligent and is such an asset to our school."

- Amy Parmentier, Chantilly HS

--------

Jennifer Piotrowski, Chantilly HS

"Teachers of 9th graders asked for resources to help their students learn how to "do" high school. Ms. Piotrowski stepped right into this need by talking with her own students, collaborating with the Strategies for Success teachers, researching to find the most relevant and engaging materials, and then creating amazing lessons, choice boards, and slide decks that are fun, creative, and best of all, help our students learn how to do high school."

These lessons have been invaluable and we will be able to use them for years to come."

- Amy Parmentier, Chantilly HS

--------

Carmen Andersen, Laurel Ridge ES

"Ms. Andersen is a kind, caring, thoughtful teacher. She works above and beyond to help her students succeed. She is able to pinpoint an area of need for each individual in her class and will find the resources to support them. Meena Jagasia, Cooper MS

"Ms. Jagasia has demonstrated significant patience and understanding towards my 8th-grade daughter. When she was having difficulty with a group assignment and reached out to her teacher, Ms. Jagasia’s response was swift, kind, and compassionate. I sincerely thank her for connecting with my daughter and listening to her concerns. During distance learning, making these connections is especially difficult but Ms. Jagasia has achieved this and deserves to be recognized! Thank you!!!"

- a Cooper MS Parent

--------

Crystal Gulino, Mosby Woods ES

- a Mosby Woods ES Parent

--------

Jeanette Corgnati, Chantilly HS

"Ms. Corgnati has been a source of positivity for students, teachers, and parents every single day this year.  She provides help to students struggling with attendance issues, she helped to deliver hundreds of textbooks and supplies to students, and she sends a birthday greeting to every single one of our subschool students. She prepares monthly care packages for teachers and students who have had an accomplishment or just need a little sign that they are cared for and missed.  She is always willing to take on one more task and her kindness towards others is inspiring. Chantilly is so incredibly lucky to have Ms. Corgnati taking care of us all."

- Amy Parmentier, Chantilly HS

--------

Alexa Scott, Chantilly HS

"Alexa's outreach and communication with students who are experiencing significant struggles has been exemplary. She reaches out to students, parents, teachers, and administrators to ensure that everyone is working together for the good of our students. She is positive, creative, and always willing to make one more effort, one more call, or one more outreach to secure what is needed to best support her students."

- Amy Parmentier, Chantilly HS

--------

Dwayne Peyton, Chantilly HS

"Mr. Peyton is in his second year as a school counselor at CHS(and FCPS). Despite the myriad of challenges and uncharted waters due to COVID which makes the learning curve for a new employee so much harder, he has been a steady and calm presence in his students' lives. He calls them, emails them, and regularly checks on them to let them know he cares and to ensure that they are engaging in learning. His students know that they can count on him and that he is always in their corner. Seeing the positive relationships that he has been able to build during virtual school, I can only imagine the positive impact he will have when we can return to face to face education."

- Amy Parmentier, Chantilly HS

--------

Brian Welfle and Ann Jopke, Hollin Meadows ES

"Our PTA had a Bingo Night this evening hosted and moderated by Mr. Welfle (Welf on the Shelf) and Ms. Jopke. In lieu of our traditional in-person holiday sing-a-long this time of year, Mr. Welfle brought the music and singing to the virtual fun, in between being our ever comical bingo caller. We had well over 100 participants and over an hour of singing, laughing, and fun. In a time where our kids and families are isolated and need a feeling of normalcy and cheer, these two amazing teachers helped deliver this and made our school feel like a community again, even if for an evening. We greatly appreciate them taking time out of their schedule to go the extra mile-decorating their backdrops, making slides and screens, all so we could have a fun and successful evening!"

Tracey Kyle, Key MS

"Tracey Kyle, MS Spanish teacher, has been willing to share assessment strategies with colleagues during leadership meetings. She made "How To" videos for the World Language department that can also be used for ESOL students. She has taken on the creative idea of having only ESOL kids in her advisory and provides a great deal of help and support! The beginning English learners feel so connected to Key Middle School thanks to her compassion and enthusiasm during Advisory. Tracey recruited a former student of hers to speak to her Advisory kids (both 7th and 8th grade in my BBCU). She handpicked the speaker because he came to this country from El Salvador at age 12 and didn’t know English. He was a leader in HS and in her AP Spanish class. He graduated from George Mason University and owns his own business today. She also had the students brainstorm questions in advance to ask the presenter. Tracey Kyle is the epitome of FCPS CARES."

Cindy Trinca, Gatehouse Admin Center

"There are many wonderful employees that make up the vast and varied body of the dedicated FCPS staff. Cindy Trinca should have that recognition. In this covid era, many behind the scenes FCPS workers are working at full speed as they get inundated with requests and tasks. Recently, I was without any information on certain FCPS protocols and procedures. Cindy with her many many years of FCPS experience and knowledge addressed and outlined the next steps with an unruffled calm and organized approach. Cindy treated me, like everyone with her "can do" positive attitude. "When it comes to FCPS employees and colleagues, we do our best efforts to keep it all moving along," says Cindy. Hats off to you, Cindy, that work ethic makes a difference!"

Jeff Scales, Lorton Center

"Recently I returned to Lorton Center Transportation after an 18-month assignment in another department. Many things had changed during my absence. Jeff Scales and I were assigned to Team 21 together. Jeff is very knowledgeable in his position and was more than willing to share this knowledge with me. He was patient and kind while helping me to "catch up" on all the new procedures that had been implemented in my absence. While we are no longer paired together, Jeff continues to help and share on a regular basis. Jeff is absolutely a "team player"! Thank you, Jeff!"

Herman Parson, Bryant HS

"Mr. Herman Parson will soon be retiring from FCPS and the Bryant High School family in January 2021.  He joined our Bryant team about 13 years ago after being a principal in South Carolina, serving in the Air Force, and working for the Secretary of Defense. During his tenure at Bryant, he has served our students as Dean of Students, as a social studies teacher, and organized field trips to the nation's capital in which our students sometimes meet members of Congress. He has also been a positive role model for students in our school, in particular our students from our African-American community. We thank him for his legacy of service to our nation, our community, and our students."

Both our lead principal and the other assistant principal have transitioned out at the beginning of the year and Mirna kept the school going, progressing in the right direction, and showed me great empathy and care as my mom was dying. Mirna, thank you for being you. Our whole school community appreciates you."

Terry is often at meetings advocating for students to make sure they get what is needed to make them successful socially or with their learning. Terry is always available to help collaborate with teachers on IEP goals. Terry's positivity and kindness come through in her teaching and in her relationships with anyone who is lucky to work with her."

Beatriz Bucarey, Dunn Loring Parent Center

"Beatriz has always been an advocate and helper for our community’s Spanish-Speaking families. In the past months, she has given 110% to her role as a community liaison and we now consider her an honorary member of the Parent Resource Center. She has worked to increase access to the Parent Resource Center programming to the Spanish-Speaking community by developing our capacity to offer interpretation during consultations and webinars. Her facilitation of the PRC’s first parenting webinar presented entirely in Spanish allowed 52 families access to information and strategies every parent can use. Beatriz’s efforts toward equity in access are equaled only by her constant smile, patient communication, and sense of humor. We could not thank you enough, Beatriz!"

Amy MacIver, Sangster ES

"Without fanfare, Amy MacIver drove to each of her students' homes yesterday collecting cereal boxes which she then donated to Lorton Community Action Center. In all, she collected 118 boxes which will be used to feed hungry families in Fairfax County. In years past she has coordinated for the most urgent need and collected bags of toiletries (Spring '20) and snack bags (Winter '19). It's her way of involving her students in giving to those in need."

Stephanie Case, Wolftrap ES

"Ms. Case is incredibly organized, prepared, and communicates clearly to my complete amazement every day in these unprecedented times. I don't know how she does it... she seems to know what each student needs and is able to reach them through the computer screen. On Thursday, December 12 my son was excited to present a part of a research project he and a peer worked on together. I was going to video and we were very excited together when it was his turn. As he read his part, it was painfully obvious he did not write any of the content and was struggling to read it as it was a lengthy excerpt by and for adults. All I could do was watch as I saw tears of embarrassment and frustration well in his eyes. One by one students gave feedback questioning whether or not he wrote it. I advised my son to send a private message to the friend who was working with him and Ms. Case to clear up the confusion. My son was panicked and fighting real tears now. Ms. Case asked my son and his friend to meet privately by chat. She expertly discussed the matter and had such amazing intuition about how to handle the situation, it brought tears to my eyes. She made my son feel SO much better as it was his partner who copied and pasted the excerpt and she did not reprimand- she taught the boys why that is not allowed. I love the delicate way Ms. Case handled the problem, focusing on "teaching" not reprimanding or becoming offended or incensed. This is just one of many instances where Ms. Case has done a remarkable job in this virtual school year. She has helped us all to see that we can do this and learn from it. She is a remarkable teacher who has found her calling."

Sarah Olson, Lake Braddock SS

"Sarah Olson has been an amazing addition to our Lake Braddock family. She is incredibly hard-working and is always available to help in whatever capacity she is needed, even when it falls outside of her direct scope of responsibilities. Most recently, Sarah has offered to work with a teacher who has needed both instructional and technological assistance. Where Sarah could have just directed this teacher to the wide range of digital resources that she and her team have created, she instead scheduled two days to help this teacher with planning and setting up lessons. She is both kind and action-oriented in all that she does which makes Sarah an effective teammate with who colleagues want to work. Lake Braddock Secondary School and its students are fortunate to have Sarah Olson."

Hana DiPalma, Forest Edge ES

"My name is Kae Bieber and I am the Education Program Manager at ACCA Child Development Center and grandmother of a kindergartener in Mrs. DiPalma's classroom. I wanted to share with you how impressed I am and truly touched by Mrs. DiPalma's efforts to engage with the children and families through her interactions inside and outside her classroom. As I am sure you know, this year has been extremely challenging for FCPS kindergartners. At ACCA, we have 34 kindergarteners spread over 20 different elementary schools. I observe the virtual kindergarten classrooms daily and I know I may sound bias as Mrs.DiPalma is my grandson's teacher but Mrs. DiPalma is truly one of the most engaging, caring, and most importantly- developmentally appropriate teachers of the FCPS kindergarten teachers. Mrs. DiPalma's expectations for her kindergartners are realistic to each of their individual challenges during this time. Additionally, she is great at communicating with the families and highlighting for each child their individual accomplishments they achieve in her class throughout the day. Earlier in the year, she sent postcards to her kindergartners encouraging them and letting them know how thankful she is to be their teacher. She has dropped off materials at our door when I have been unable to go to the school during scheduled pickup times due to my work schedule. I am so thankful that my grandson has Mrs. DiPalma as his kindergarten teacher! I know the halls at Forest Edge are mostly empty but if a star of recognition could be put on the wall- Mrs. DiPalma's name should be on it! As a school administrator, I know how challenging this time has been but with teachers like Mrs. DiPalma, the children are thriving and in their own amazing, unique, ways!!"

"Since, the beginning of online schooling began this fall. My 2nd grader has had a difficult time adjusting to online school again. His language arts and math skills have dropped and instead of going forward, he is going backward. My husband and I are trying to do our best to help him. We are lucky to have Mrs. Meredith Shields again as his special education teacher. She has done so much for him and she has bent over backward to help us and doesn't give up on him. From a kid who yells and screams, I can't do it, I'm scared to write. She is actually getting him to do his work and is slowly getting back on track. So forever grateful for everything she does. She understands him. They have a special relationship that started last year in first grade and I hope continues next year."

Since mid-August, he has been helping me get the software installed on student laptops so we could provide the best virtual learning environment possible for our students. It has not been easy, it's been a lot of trial and error, and back and forth, with technology issues and then getting the students to figure out what they needed to do, but we got it done. And not only has he been willing to help me for my students, he's offered his support to other TSpecs throughout the county so they can do the same. Thank you for helping me and sticking with it."

Louise Robertson, Mason Crest ES

"One of my daughter‘s teachers came up with an idea for the 5th graders to write an anonymous letter to a friend and then they would send a packet of cocoa along with it. The kids would be able to read their letters and drink hot chocolate together, online, on Friday. The letters came pouring in and they were wonderful. We put together all the envelopes and got them ready to send. But then when we went to the post office we discovered it would cost $3.89 to mail each letter. And so Ms. Robertson found herself driving around delivering letters to doorsteps and mailboxes on her day off to make sure this magic could happen. In a time when connections are so hard to achieve but so necessary for our student's hearts, she went above and beyond to make sure those connections were made. How lucky we are."

Stephanie Seadeek, Fort Hunt ES

"It’s very easy to hit a wall during this situation, either literally, professionally, or personally. Yesterday I had the very fortunate opportunity to reach outside of my team and speak to Mrs. Seadeek. Mrs. Seadeek went out of her way to drop vocabulary packets off at my house for my daughter, and then stayed too (safely) cheer Mr. Hurd up and spoke of ways we all need a boost of good cheer and attitude. It was a great reminder for me to reach out to other young veterans such as Mrs. Seadeek if you need help to get a fresh perspective on how best to accomplish our goals.  How lucky are we that we have so much veteran leadership to reach out to inside the walls of Fort Hunt. From team leaders to others with years of experience - we’re STILL in this together!  Mrs. Seadeek’s attitude and perseverance in preparing children for their middle school futures are inspiring and even find their way down to those of us teaching at the younger levels. Great job as always, Mrs. Seadeek!"

My 5th grader absolutely adores Mrs. Casey. Mrs. Casey has provided my child with a positive environment that focuses on building my child's positive self-esteem through high standards and well-designed instruction. When I reach out to Mrs. Casey she is always responsive. She never gives the impression that I am burdening her, even if I am. This summer, Mrs. Casey took time out of her busy schedule to drive to all the homes of her students and drop off welcome gifts. She did this again for the winter break holiday. It means the world to my daughter to have Mrs. Casey think enough about her to come to her home to say hello and drop off a little something. My daughter loves Mrs. Casey and my family is so grateful for the time and care that she puts into her job."

Andrew Ryan, Twain MS

"Mr. Ryan is an incredible teacher. He teaches Algebra I Honors to my 7th grader. It is a tough subject for a 12-year-old. But Mr. Ryan is patient and kind. My daughter tells me that he doesn't rush through the material and he always gives the students a lot of time to do practice questions in class. My daughter is a bit of a perfectionist. She is always emailing him questions and asking him for more opportunities to practice the material. Mr. Ryan is extremely responsive. Most of the time he responds to her in under 24 hours. He is always willing to take the time to speak to her. And once when she asked for more material to study over Thanksgiving break he created questions for her before he took his break. That was so impressive because he could have just said "look here" or "read this thing." Instead, he put specific questions together for her before he left to take his Thanksgiving break. She was over the moon. She works hard in the class because she wants to do well but also because she doesn't want to disappoint him. She's never met him. This is her first year at Twain but he's already left an impression on here. Thank you, Mr. Ryan!"

"During these challenging times, concern about my daughter’s growth and development are at the forefront. In as much as we encourage alternative methods of staying connected and engaging in school activities, the last several months have provided opportunities to strengthen our resiliency level. I am thrilled my daughter shares her online school experiences during our family dinner time, and the two names that she consistently mentions are Mr. Engdahl and Ms. Jeanblanc. Thank you, Mr. Engdahl, for keeping my daughter engaged in doing what she loves. The creative teaching methods you implement and the level of accountability you place on her are exceptional. She thrives off your instruction and is moved by your leadership. While distance learning is challenging, she feels comfortable and confident in keeping her camera on for you! Kudos to Ms. Jeanblanc for broadening my daughter’s interests. She is eager to share what she’s learning in both your classes and is beside herself as she shares learned facts from you. The extension of your instruction trickles into our family conversations, and I contribute that to your genuinely charismatic virtual instruction. Because of your classes, the essence of my daughter’s confidence has been elevated."

"When you’re hired to be an FCPS bus driver, you assume you’ll be spending your days wheeling around the county transporting our students to and from school. But when the pandemic closed schools to in-person learning, the drivers in Area 3 Team 36 hopped out of their buses and into our school to help facilitate a myriad of projects and activities! Thanks to their flexibility, their keen project management skills, and their good-natured attitudes, Oak View has been able to support our teachers and students through activities like supply distributions, assembling and packing items for students, and logging take-home books. And just this week alone, a team helped gather and organize more than 1000 canned goods for the annual SCA food drive AND unpack and label 400 laptops for our students. While we have always admired our team of bus drivers, we continue to be awed by their willingness to serve our community on a whole new level!"

Mark Purdy, Lake Braddock SS

"My daughter talks about your class all the time, how fun it is, how it’s reinforced her interest in math, and made life in virtual school all that much better. I asked her to write some thoughts, and here is what she had to say: “I like that Mr. Purdy is always engaged with our class. I love his fun ice breakers with holiday themes, and the games he plays with us to get us excited for class. I like how he engages with students vs. just talking TO them. He answers all of my many, many questions, tells us funny stories, and helps us with practical things like how to get service hours by wrapping presents at the mall.” As I work full time, I don’t always have an opportunity to check-in and see/hear how classes are going, but the few times I have overheard your class going on, I can see why she is such a fan. You have great energy, a positive but no-nonsense attitude, are firm but fair, and clearly have a love for teaching. I’m only sad she doesn’t get to see you in person. When we discussed going back to school vs. staying virtual, her first question was “Which option lets me keep Mr. Purdy for a teacher?” That about sums it up. Thank you for doing what you do and doing it so well. It has not gone unnoticed!"

Lasi Gunaratna, Johanna Aguilar, and Scott Vickers, Fort Hunt ES

"A BIG shout out to our teachers of children with autism - Lasi Gunaratna, Johanna Aguilar, and Scott Vickers! As our Superintendent ponders when to bring grades K through 6 back to the Building, our teachers of the students with autism are in the building and working with actual, real-life children! It takes real professionalism to put one’s anxiety of the current situation aside and do their job that Fort Hunt requires them to do. It shouldn’t surprise any of us that they do their job well, but wow do they deserve the credit that is coming to them regardless. I learn from our teachers’ patience and positive attitude.  Thank you all for setting a wonderful example for myself and others new like me. Keep up your great work and know I can’t wait for my kinders to safely walk the hallways next to your children!"

"A BIG shout to Senora Tomas and Senora Myers! Somehow during a pandemic, our wonderful admin found Senora Tomas to long-term sub for Senora Myers, and somehow during a pandemic, Senora Myers facilitated the most seamless virtual handover I’ve witnessed during my short, short time in education. NO small feat for either party!  Speaking as the parent of a Fort Hunt 6th grader, Senora Tomas was an absolute rock star. She won over my daughter, which was all I could’ve asked for. And then to have Senora Myers bravely come back into our teaching fold after maternity leave?  We are LUCKY to have them both. Both teachers make our school a stronger Spanish speaking entity and both are setting a great example for someone like myself.  Well done, teachers and admin!"

LaToya Prescod-Williams, Fairfax Transition Support and Resource Center

"LaToya Prescod-Williams spearheaded an equity-focused virtual movie night and discussion for teachers. This was a genius way to spur conversation between teachers and hold a mirror to practices we see taking place. There were rich, insightful conversations that not only focused on equity but also built community during a time when the faculty feels so disconnected. Ms. Prescod-Williams is a brand new faculty member this year and it was awesome to see the initiative she took to get to know her colleagues and set up this event. Thanks, LaToya!"

"Jessica - please hear this - "thank you, thank you, thank you" for being such a wonderful asset at our school and a great person altogether.  I'm not one for fluff so I'll qualify simply by saying your punctuality in getting back to me in a very time-sensitive fashion, accuracy in already having a very keen sense of the information and students at hand, and your heartfelt passion in modeling establishing relationships with all the other things you do is simply awesome. Thank you very, very much for your example of professionalism and though I've been at it 28 years, it inspires me to check myself and see if I'm giving in the same manner."

"Sarah Pevner and Laura Christadore have outdone themselves yet again. Not only did these incredible colleagues help brainstorm a choice book review for our ninth graders, they also came into each of our classes to work with the students directly on the presentation of their writing. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, Sarah and Laura created a beautiful website incorporating the book reviews of our 150+ students which they will include on the LBSS library site. Dan Summers, South County HS

"Mr. Summers is the best history teacher! As a military kid, moving became my second nature but never something I completely got used to. He was the very first teacher I met at South County before school started during the 2019-2020 school year. I learned so much in his classroom and looked forward to learning every day. In Mr. Summers's class, I became a stronger academic student and always felt safe. I never got the chance to thank you or say goodbye, but please know my gratitude to you."

Jackie Prendergast, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"Jackie Prendergast, the fantastic PSL for the South Lakes pyramid, has been a huge help to us! I attended a workshop last spring on Transition IEPs, and she was a panelist. At the end of the panel, she offered to meet with any parents from her pyramid to answer questions. She was friendly and knowledgeable and helped us make connections with our son's new middle school. She arranged for us to observe a Personal Development class to help us know if it would be a good fit for our son. She spent time answering our questions and helped us feel far more confident about the transition to middle school. She introduced us to Ms. Vagts and advised us regarding our son's IEP. Great job, Ms. Prendergast!"

Brigid Williams, Willow Oaks

"In our roles as Central Office Equity Leads, we are responsible for coordinating the Equity Module training, so that our colleagues have an opportunity to participate at a time that fits their schedules. The record-keeping necessary for attendance accuracy can be very time-consuming. Brigid took the initiative to coordinate the attendance and entry into MyPDE for all of our sessions this fall. Because of her efficiency, we were able to update attendance and credit across several offices very quickly. Holly Bolanos, Thoreau MS

"As a 7th grader, I was really nervous to enter middle school. Thinking about tough classes made me go crazy! But then I met Ms. Bolanos.  Out of every teacher I ever had in my life she is my favorite. She is willing to sit for hours and teach something to someone who does not understand. She shaped me into who I am, teaching me about etiquette when typing or even spreading kindness to people around you. Ms. Bolanos will remember your name so quickly, and when talking about your day she will ask "How did the baseball game go" or "How was your road trip I heard it was snowing there." You see I always dreamed about having a teacher who understands me and knows me better than I know myself. I see Ms. Bolanos as a remodel. I will remember her as a teacher with respect, love and gratitude for her students. Ms. Bolanos is a teacher I will never forget."
