Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) maintains student records in compliance with laws of both the Commonwealth of Virginia and the federal government. Primary guidance for the handling of scholastic records is from the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the federal law designed to protect the privacy of a student’s scholastic records. All public schools, including FCPS, are covered by FERPA.

Where are my student records?

Currently Enrolled Students:

All student records for currently enrolled students are kept at the school the student is attending.

Alumni or Former Students That Graduated or Left  FCPS:

After June 2019

All student records (including from previous grade levels) are kept at the last school the student attended for up to 5 years.

On or Before June 2019

Five years after graduation, a student's records are transferred and housed at the FCPS Records Center.

General Education Diploma (GED)

Virginia of Department of Education (VDOE) no longer accepts paper, phone, fax or email requests for the fulfillment of GED credentials. GED test takers who earned a credential can order duplicate copies of transcripts and official Virginia GED certificates online at the GED Credentialing website.

Home Instruction

Any parent may elect to provide home instruction for his or her school-age child in lieu of school attendance. A parent or guardian may provide a notice of intent to provide home instruction with these forms.
