We are always looking for kind and caring substitute teachers and substitute instructional assistants to ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers and instructional assistants need to be out of the classroom.  FCPS substitutes provide consistency and continuity for our students and make a “SUB”stantial difference in our schools.

To become a substitute teacher or substitute instructional assistant, begin by filling out and submitting an application.

Once an interested candidate’s application, FCPS orientation, and background check are completed and approved, hired substitutes can expect to enter a classroom within a week!

High-Volume Days 

The Fairfax County School Board has approved the following days for high-volume pay. All substitutes who work either full or half-day jobs will receive high-volume pay. This includes long-term substitutes and site-based substitutes.

All substitute teachers will receive their hourly pay plus an additional $80 for each high-volume day worked. All substitute instructional assistants, substitute public health training assistants, and substitute public health attendants will receive their hourly pay plus an additional $55 for each high-volume day worked.

Work More-Earn More

The Fairfax County School Board has a bonus program for substitute teachers, substitute instructional assistants, substitute public health training assistants, and substitute public health attendants who accept more than the 10 required days for the 2024-2025 school year.  FCPS has developed milestones for the number of days worked.  A day is defined as a 3-hour job or 7-hour job.  For each milestone, you will earn a bonus.  Your total bonus will be $900 if you meet all three milestones. Bonuses will be paid quarterly, according to the chart below.

• If you work 50 days within a school year, you will earn a $200 bonus.
• If you work 100 days within a school year, you will earn a $300 bonus.
• If you work 150 days within a school year, you will earn a $400 bonus.
