Become a High-Impact Tutor

High-impact tutoring pairs no more than five students with a tutor who meets with them consistently. The tutor targets specific learning needs and regularly assesses their learning and progress. The tutor collaborates with teachers and parents to ensure effective and continued progress. 

FCPS began offering this service at select schools (based on the learning needs of students) in the 2022-23 school year. Our in-person tutoring effort is part of an ongoing plan to address learning loss tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is part of an FCPS strategic plan goal related to academic growth and excellence; ensuring students can access and participate in early intervention, academic support, and other support as needed. Students are identified for this program by their school.

Position Description for High-Impact Tutor

High-impact tutors provide targeted instruction and remediation for students before, during, and/or after the school day. Tutors collaborate with school-based and central office staff to provide academic support for students aligned to standards-based classroom instruction. 

Responsibilities include developing and teaching lessons to small groups of students (up to five), assessing student learning, managing student performance data, and communicating with school staff and families regarding student progress.  

Qualifications

• A minimum of 30 college credits is required. An exception may be provided for applicants who do not have a minimum of 30 college credits but are enrolled in an approved teacher education preparatory program or participated in a teacher introduction course in high school. 
• Candidates new to FCPS must pass a background check
• Candidates must be able to understand, follow, and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. 
• They must be able to work effectively with children, young adults, faculty, and staff; and perform all required tasks, as assigned.
• Tutors must consistently and reliably be able to work at least 3 days a week for at least 4 hours each day during the school day, in the morning, or afternoon up to 5 days a week for up to 29 hours a week. 
• Tutors must be able to commit to tutoring for at least two academic quarters, or one semester. 
• Candidates who have experience teaching and/or tutoring are preferred.

All tutoring programs will take place in-person at FCPS schools under school administration supervision. 

Pay Scale

Tutors will be paid at FCPS Hourly Band 13, which for the 2023-2024 school year is $48.58 per hour. Based on the number of hours each tutor commits to working each week, tutors will be compensated at a standardized weekly rate for time working with students, training, and planning.

Training and Planning

Schools will provide tutors with tutoring resources including lesson plans, assessments, and instructional materials. However, tutors will be expected to have the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to use these resources when working with students with limited training.  

Once tutors are hired and matched to a school, tutors will be required to complete a series of asynchronous, self-paced training modules. Training modules may include required professional development for all FCPS employees, training around instructional strategies and pedagogy, and curriculum-specific training from FCPS or from approved vendors. 

Tutor Availability

Candidates will be asked to complete a survey to share preferred subjects, scheduling availability including time of day, and the FCPS region(s) in which they are looking to work. This will allow our central office staff to match tutors to the schools where tutoring needs have been identified by FCPS. Ultimately, a school-based administrator will reach out to the matched tutors, and the administrator will be able to discuss with tutors regarding specific details such as grade level, days, etc.
