Virginia Retirement System (VRS)
The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is a mandatory defined benefit program sponsored by the Commonwealth of Virginia. All full-time educational, administrative, or operational employees (typically monthly-paid) are members of the VRS. After five years of eligible service, you become vested in this system. This plan will apply to you if you were hired or rehired before July 1, 2010; and you were vested as of January 1, 2013. For more details about Plan 1, visit the VRS website.
This Plan will apply to you if you were hired or rehired on or after July 1, 2010; or you were hired or rehired before July 1, 2010, and were not vested as of January 1, 2013. For more details about Plan 2, visit the VRS website.
This plan will apply to you if you were hired or rehired after January 1, 2014, and were not vested as of January 1, 2014 or you have no previous VRS service credit. Other plans may apply for new hires with previous VRS service. The Hybrid Retirement Plan combines the features of a defined benefit plan and a defined contribution plan.
