Steps for Retiring

Thank you for your service with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).  If you are preparing to resign/retire from FCPS or have recently separated employment from FCPS, review the information listed below.

  1. File Your Intent to Resign/Retire - You need to complete the Notification of Resignation/Retirement (HR-2) form.
    1. If you are resigning, review the Leaving Employment With FCPS webpage. This page describes how ending employment before you are eligible for retirement affects your benefits.
    2. If you are retiring, review the Health Care Benefits in Retirement webpage. This page will outline how retirement impacts your benefits.
    3. For more details about how retirement benefits, please read our "Preparing for Retirement" packet. There are two versions depending on your retirement system membership: ERFC/VRS members: Preparing for Retirement for ERFC/VRS Members packet and  FCERS members: Preparing for Retirement for FCERS Members packet.
  2. Retain Your Professional Learning Records - Before Leaving FCPS, print out your professional development records from MyPDE. If you have already left and need a copy, complete and submit the Authorization to Disclose Professional Learning Records form (PDF).

There are a few factors in determining when your health benefits will end. If you paid all required premiums for your medical and dental coverage, your plan enrollment continues according to the following schedule:

  • Through August 31, if you terminate employment in June, July, or August.
  • Through the last day of the month in which you leave FCPS, if it’s any month other than June, July, or August.

If you were on a leave of absence and have not paid all required premiums, your coverage typically ends as of the last day of the month that the full premium payment was received and applied.

After your coverage terminates, you may be eligible to elect COBRA continuation coverage. Your COBRA election notice and form will be mailed separately to your home address. View the COBRA premium rates.

Once you are retired, you can learn about new information or find resources about retirement on the retiree benefits page.
