What Are STEAM and Computer Science?

STEAM

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. STEAM includes the “A” for Arts practices and principles. STEAM takes STEM to the next level by emphasizing innovation, design, and aesthetics. Students use STEAM to learn, explore, create, and solve real-world problems in new ways. In PreK through grade 12, students:

• Apply content knowledge using engineering practices to solve through design.
• Plan, design, and create models to test and refine.
• Develop Portrait of Graduate (POG) attributes and prepare for future careers.

Computer Science

Computer science is the study of how to use computers to learn, explore, create, and solve problems. It is more than coding and programming. In PreK through grade 12, students:

• Apply computational thinking to solve problems with or without technology.
• Create, test, and refine solutions using a computer.
• Develop Portrait of Graduate (POG) attributes and prepare for future careers.

Why Are STEAM and Computer Science (CS) Good for ALL Students?

   Students engage as creators, explorers, and innovators and learn their ideas matter. They see themselves belonging in STEAM and CS careers.
