Academic Advising and Course Selection at our middle and high schools empowers students to make informed decisions about their academic journey and future career paths.
Through personalized guidance, students explore course options that align with their:

- Strengths
- and Goals
Dedicated counselors and specialists work closely with each student. Individual support helps them select classes that:
- Fulfill graduation requirements.
- Prepare them for college and beyond.
- Makes sure every student can confidently build a pathway toward success.
Purpose of Academic Advising
The purposes of K-12 academic advising are to:
- Guide and support students in their educational journey.
- Empower students to
- become self-directed learners
- make informed decisions about their education and future.
What's Involved?
Academic advising involves providing personalized advice, resources, and mentorship to help students:
Academic advising helps students identify their learning preferences, areas of interest, and potential challenges.
Academic advising provides relevance to students’ academic effort and educational pursuits by helping them understand the connection between school and the world of work, assisting them in career planning and career-related goal setting.
Through academic advising, students develop skills such as time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
This includes
- Helping students develop realistic academic and career plans.
- Choose appropriate courses (grades 5 or 6 through 12).
- Stay on track to graduate (grades 8 through 12).
Timeline for Middle and High School Students
- November: School Board approves changes to course offerings
- December and January: School specific curriculum programs and events available for families and students to overview course offerings and the academic advising process.
- January and February: Students meet individually with school counselors to discuss course selection, graduation requirements, and post-secondary plans.
- March: Students finalize course requests. Schools inform students and families about procedures and deadlines to request changes to course selections.
- August: Students and families can view schedules for grades in Studentvue and Parentvue.
