Career Exploration Activities (Work-Based Learning)
Learn about work through observation. Career exploration activities helps students connect with working professionals in the workplace. Students gain knowledge about pathways, employer expectations, and the skills for success.
Students use these experiences to make informed decisions for life after high school. Career exploration activities help students:
- Establish their own career preferences.
- Find a career that fits their talents and needs.
- Develop an idea of next steps for a desired career goal.
Job Shadowing
Job shadowing is a short-term experience. Students will observe and participate in tasks associated with a specific field or position. This gets students into a real workplace for hands-on observation. Students:
- Observe the workday of a professional.
- Interact with coworkers or customers.
- Take part in the employee's responsibilities (e.g., assigned tasks, meetings, and appointments).
Career mentoring
A career mentor is someone who shares their knowledge and expertise. They are professionals who meet with one student or small groups of students. They share insights and provide guidance. Mentoring helps students:
- Understand specific workplaces and expectations.
- Match interests and strengths with a career pathway.
- Set goals including postsecondary education/training.
- Identify opportunities and make good choices.
- Gain confidence and self-awareness.
- Build a network.
Annual Mentoring Events
Internships
Paid and unpaid internship is a professional learning experience that provides practical work. They are related to a student's career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for skills development. Students may pursue internships independently or with assistance from their Employment and Transition Representative.
