The Virginia General Assembly is the legislative body of the Commonwealth of Virginia, representing one of the oldest continuous law-making institutions in the Western Hemisphere. Established in 1619, it consists of two chambers: the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia. The General Assembly is responsible for enacting laws, approving the state budget, and shaping public policy within the state. The Virginia General Assembly has completed work on its scheduled 60-day 2024 Regular Session, including passage of the biennial budget at a Special Session on May 13, 2024. Legislation adopted by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor goes into effect on July 1, 2024, unless otherwise specified in the legislation itself.
The 2025 Legislative session starts on January 8, 2025.
